Rhodius, M(arie): Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

George (Rhodius) is fairly well; he is so dreadfully nervous. He must have things just so. He has to drink a certain amount before he has any get up about him at all. She has been sick herself from so much excitement all the time.

Lambert, Father L(ouis) A.: Scottsville, N(ew) Y(ork)

W(abraushek), J. W(illiam): Manistee, Mich(igan)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is sorry to learn that Edwards has been os sick. This has been an awful spring for anyone feeling badly. Wabraushek is much improved but still taking medicine. He has been trying to do three men's work for the last five years. Because of the depression it has been decided to discontinue business for awhile. He is of the opinion that he will try to get out of that climate. He has two boys and three girls to look after and he is blessed with the best wife in the world. Father is busy at the mill in Eastlake.

Weadock, G. L(eo): Ann Arbor, Mich(igan)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

It was with deep regret that he learned of the death of Father Corby. He could not help but admire and esteem his person. He is sorry that Notre Dame (University) defeated Michigan (University) but the defeat amounts to little as Notre Dame's athletics are so corrupted as to make it more of a blot on the cover of a college like Michigan, pure in sports, to play them an honor. Notre Dame ought to purify its athletics and join the Western Amateur Assn.

Britten, James: London, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(18)98 May 8
Lenihan, Bishop Geo(rge) M.: Ponsonby, N(ew) Z(ealand)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Lenihan is grateful for the book on "Phases of an Old Fallacy". Luckily they have men who take up the cudgels; Father (Henry G.) Ganss has done much in a Father (Louis A. Lambert) style to put this Methodist out of court. Hudson's countrymen have shown the world how to fight. (William Henry) Thorne in the "Globe" maintains that the United States was wrong in going to war. He is an eccentric and a fool no doubt; but he puts his reasons in all things strongly. How he does love Archbishops (John) Ireland and (John Joseph) Keane. They are having a wild controversy about the inspiration of the Bible. Lenihan's Maori Fathers are in sore distress.

White, P. J.: Scranton, P(ennsylvani)a
to Henry F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

White has distributed Brownson's prospectus sheets and sample of covers and sends an order for Dr. Garvey, who is a man of means. He has been promised orders from a few others, while some declared the books too dear and others that they would consider the matter. One priest understood that the work had been condensed into three volumes, about which White would like to know. He asks for information on the cost of express as compared with freight, and still hopes to sell a good number of sets. Because of the stinginess of the clergy, he asks whether he could take orders at the price of one volume per month.

St. Joseph, Sister: Nagpur, India
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister thanks Hudson for the aid for the distressed orphans of the famine. They are now in the scorching summer. There are 985 children now. If only they had the millions of children of the natives India would be converted. This past week they got up a charity bazaar. Bishop (Peter Joseph Hurth, C.S.C.), is in anxiety about a priest in charge of four large Christianized villages.

St. Joseph, Sister: Nagpur, (India)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister thanks Hudson for the 3 pounds. They made an appeal to the Society of the Holy Childhood and the Propagation of the Faith to allow them an annual sum for their orphans, but for want of some influential person to further their interests they were refused. One of their sisters just came from their orphanage for medicines and provisions. She often finds opportunities of baptizing infants.

Seton, Mgr. (Robert): (Jersey City, New Jersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Da me, (Indiana)

All passed off very successfully at the archbishop's silver jubilee. He tried to get some souvenirs of the late George Miles, the author, for Edwards. He knew and liked Miles. His little known novel called "Loretto or the Cleric" is a gem of Catholic literature. Seton suggests that Edwards write to Mrs Manning for souvenirs of Miles.

MacFadyen, Dugald: Edinburgh, (Scotland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

MacFadyen sends his setting of "Who Fears to Speak of '98". He desires to have it known in America. Perhaps Hudson could furnish him with the name of a music publishing firm which would take up the song and push it. He is sending a copy of "Who Fears" for review to each of the papers Hudson mentioned. Enclosed is a drawing of MacFadyen.

Seton, Mgr. Robert: (Jersey City, New Jersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He sends some papers which may be interesting to look over a century from now. The Archbishop (Michael A. Corrigan) has aged and is taking on a blotched appearance. Although he has done nothing for him, Seton cannot but feel a certain sympathy for the Archbishop now that he has been made to feel that there are those who neither love nor admire him. The Archbishop has learning, piety, and zeal, yet there is something he lacks.

O'Donnell, Father James H.: Watertown, C(onnecticu)t
to Father (James) French, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He wishes to secure all the information he can get about Father Edward Gillen, (C.S.C.) In 1841 Gillen lived in Hartford and organized a class in singing; he was an expert violinist; he travelled through the west as agent for the "Boston Pilot" and finally entered the Congregation of Holy Cross. He believes Gillen was a chaplain during the Civil War. He asks the date of his death, if he taught at Notre Dame, where buried, etc. (Note on reverse side): Gillen studied at (Notre Dame) and sold books and peddled through the country; his little store was situated near the center of the present college park; this was during the 50's. He was ordained by Bishop (Josue) Young, Erie about 1859; went to war as chaplain; died in Brooklyn and buried in Community cemetery at Notre Dame.
