1898 Dec. 5
Griffith, G(eorge) Taylor: Lima, Indiana
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Griffith is perplexed to be sure of what God's will is for him. He is not so certain as he used to be of the Anglican position. There are thousands of Anglicans in England and America who believe themselves to be Catholics. The Greeks are coming closer to them. Many a priest in the Episcopalian Church is persecuted by Episcopalians for teaching what the Prayer Book requires them to teach. Griffith is convinced that God has given him a vocation to teach the Catholic religion. He has been in the ministry of the Episcopal Church almost fifteen years. He leaves there in a week for Minneapolis. Was Hudson a convert to the Catholic Church?

Ever since he left school he has been trying to find employment but has been unsuccessful. It is time he was doing something for himself.

1898 Dec. 8
Reuss, Francis X.: (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is now working on an enlarged and corrected edition of his book. There are so many variations of spelling proper names. And just take a look at the Latin of Bishop Conwell. He could show bad Latin by the yards taken from the old records. Errors in the location of titular sees are plentiful, but it is history nevertheless.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

What does Mrs. ( ) Loughead mean when she says in "The Old Cathedral" a change took place in the complexion of the clergy? Governor (Peter H.) Burnett had a pew in St. Mary's. Father (Michael?) Accolti, S.J., got special leave to baptize Stoddard in St. Mary's. Archbishop (Joseph Sadoc) A lemany was very good to Stoddard. Stoddard asks Hudson to let him send "Old Days in El Dorado" in February or March. In all that he sends he wishes to retain the right of reproduction. He has sent Yoni's(?) article.

(18)98 Dec. 16
Capes, F(lorence) M.: London, (England)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Capes asks if Hudson would be interested in publishing a short life of St. Rose of Lima. Father ( ) Proctor, (O.P.), suggested America as having a special interest in St. Rose. Capes could furnish Hudson with illustrations lent him from Stone. The life was in part suggested by Mother Frances Raphael Drane, (O.P.), who was a friend of Capes. Would Hudson ever care to publish English reprints?

to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is awfully busy and finds time to do little more than write home. He goes home in May and will visit Notre Dame University on his way, For anything outside of medicine Notre Dame is a little ahead of any of the schools. He was shocked to learn of Prof. (Newton A.) Preston's death.

1898 Dec. 17
Crawford, F(rancis) Marion: Sorrento, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Crawford thanks Hudson for the notice of his book. He returned to New York the first of May very ill and was pronounced consumptive. The doctors say Crawford owes his recovery to his strong constitution. He was obliged to stay in New York until the end of July. His present work is a life of Leo XIII. The printed materials of the Pope's life are plentiful but distasteful to Crawford.

(18)98 Dec. 17
S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard has never seen a copy of the "Cruise". He asked the publishers to insert "Reprinted from the Ave Maria and the San Francisco Chronicle". The book before Stoddard does not contain this passage. They tell him that its insertion would injure the sale of the book. No magazine or journal has ever asked Stoddard to name them in his book. He missed three lectures last week through illness.

1898 Dec. 18
(Donovan), John: Tracy, Minn(esota)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He had given up all hopes of hearing from Edwards. How lonesome it is! If he was at Notre Dame, he would be going to St. Mary's about this time. He had to laugh when he heard George Wilson was married. He used to say he would rather work than go to school.

Ganss, Father H(enry) G.: Carlisle, P(ennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ganss received Hudson's letters. If the work warrants a second edition he will have the grammatical features properly set. He has an idea that Dr. ( ) Buckley, who sent him an acknowledgement of both pamphlets, will review them. The Assistant State librarian called on Ganss last week and took a few notes to incorporate into a letter to the "Sun". Dr. ( ) Riley, found many admirable things in "Mariology". Ganss is still searching for matter for his rehabilitation of the Middle Ages. He expects to give Hudson a series of articles on "Protestantism and the Bible".

Chute, Fred B.: Minneapolis, (Minnesota)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He thanks Edwards for the picture of Notre Dame. It calls up many happy days and the recollection of many good times when the Crescent Club and little private library seances made brighter the week's work. A friend of his gave him a dinner the other day. He spent a good share of time for the Orphan's Fair. They hope they make enough to pay off the indebtedness.

1898 Dec. 22
(Hardenbergh) W. Ad: St. Paul, (Minnesota)
to James (F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

The handsome engraving of Notre Dame which Edwards sent was received. While there is little to remind him of the Notre Dame of a generation ago, he will be proud of it. Edwards is not sociable of late years; it must be that St. Paul has fallen under the ban of his displeasure.

1898 Dec. 22
Montavon, C.S.C., Wm. T.:

O'K(ennedy), Father R(ichard): Fedamore, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

O'Kennedy asks Hudson to let him go thru the Breviary and give to his readers the devotion to Our Lady that is to be found there. As the espousal of Our Lady is the first feast found there, he is hurrying to send it to Hudson. Aubrey de Vere has had a terrible trial. His nephew, to whom Sir Stephen de Vere made over Curragh Chase, died suddenly two days ago. It is a wonder that O'Kennedy, being a pupil of Father Mathew Russell, (S.J.), and admiring Rosa Mulholland (Gilbert), never met her (Gilbert).

1898 Dec. 24
(McDonnell), Sister M(ary) Magdelene: Lisbon, Portugal
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister sends Hudson only $3. Frivolous cheap literature is all the youth of Portugal demands. Her sympathies were with the United States in the war. The Queen has been entirely governed by (Praxedes Mateo) Sagasta. It is believed that as soon as peace is signed there will be a Carlist insurrection in Spain. All Sister's sympathies are with D(on) Carlos. America and England have seen at last that they should be one and if the alliance be lasting the Anglo-Saxon race will ride the world. If Hudson lived among the Latin races he would see how utterly debased they are. Another sad event has been the assassination of the Empress of Austria. The Portuguese government has been giving them a great deal of annoyance. They have got their old church renovated.

1898 Dec. 24
Seton, Mgr. Robert: Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards' interesting note about O. A. Brownson has been received. Seton has been confined to his house for a week with the grippe. He is unfit for the work of the Christmas season. The dedication of the church of St. Lawrence and St. Ignatius of the Jesuit Fathers was admirably done. Bishop (Bernard J.) McQuaid's sermon was admirable.

(1898) Dec. 27
Bonnet, Father Joseph: New York, (New York)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

Bonnet encloses an extract of the "Univers" of December 16, in which (Corrigan)'s name is associated with a controversy between the "Univers" and another Paris Catholic paper, "la Vérité." The polemic has arisen from a single sentence, found in one of Bonnet's last letters in which he quoted (Corrigan). The text has been corrected for Bonnet had written something else. Bonnet felt it was useful to point out to European Catholics where they could take a stand on this matter. He did not think it necessary to ask (Corrigan)'s pleasure for such a quotation. Where "la Vérité" has found fault, Bonnet cannot say. The fault it finds with the "Univers" is that it suppressed important doctrinal passages of the article of "l'Ami du Clergé." Such criticism appears well-founded. The "Univers" has not been as upright on Americanism as it should have been. (Corrigan) cannot be held responsible for the way the "Univers" made extracts from "l'Ami du Clergé." Bonnet has asked for a copy of "la Vérité." There may already by something in the "Vérité" of Quebec.

Gregori, Fannie: Cormons, (Austria)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

She sends best wishes for a happy New Year. Her brother Pio is still in very bad health; his terrible condition may be the cause of his losing his position. Then her brother Costantino's business is not successful so that she has little cause to rejoice. She wrote to Father Zahm offering to give the Nativity for $1500 from which he could keep $500 in payment for that sum borrowed by her Father (Luigi Gregori) from Father General.

Edwards' Christmas greetings reached him today while he was confined to his bed. He wishes Edwards many happy returns of the season. In the Dublin Review there is a very interesting article on (Father John A.) Zahm's works. He wishes to secure copies of his works.

Griffith, G(eorge) Taylor: Minneapolis, Minn(esota)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Griffith spent Christmas there and was lonesome. He now has no connection with the Episcopal Church, having resigned his position at the Howe school. On Christmas day he went to mass at St. Stephen's Church. He met Father (Alexander) Christie and Monsignor (James?) Nugent of England a year ago. Griffith is promised a letter of introduction to Father (James M.) Cleary by Father (Alexander P.) Doyle, (C.S.P.). Before hearing from the Paulists Griffith wrote to Hudson, having heard of him from (Flora Louise?) Stanfield, an Episcopalian who writes for the Ave Maria. How glorious the though of some day being a Catholic priest.

1898 Dec. 31
Mulholland, St. Clair A.: Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He wishes Edwards would send him the full military record and birth-place of General (William A.) Olmstead. Mulholland sees that Olmstead has been elected commander of the Notre Dame (G.A.R. Grand Army of the Republic) Post. He bought a painting by the great Polish artist Malczewski, "Death of an Exile in Siberia"; it is valued at $2000. If Edwards can use it for the University, he will sell it.
