Katzer, Archbishop F(rederick) X(avier): Milwaukee, (Wisconsin)
 to Archbishop M(ichael) Aug(ustine) Corrigan: New York, N(ew) Y(ork)

Katzer saw a dispatch in several papers dated from Washington in which Katzer's name was included with other Archbishops in solemnly protesting to the Pope regarding the Americanism controversy. Katzer did not write to the Holy Father about the Encyclical Letter on Americanism at all. Had he done so he would have thanked the Holy Father for the opportune letter. Katzer will contradict the statement in the papers.

1899 May 6
Meagher, Louis: Frankfort, K(entuck)y
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was glad to learn that the reason why he had not heard from Edwards for so long a time was because Edwards did not received the letter he wrote in January. He sees that N.D.U. is rather "warm" in athletics this year. Their high school defeated Frankfort Business College in April. Their Latin teacher gave them 50 extra lines to read.

(Alice Worthington) W(inthrop)'s article is a disappointment except where it deals with the statistics of the sisters' service. How much space will Hudson give Dorsey? She has material enough to fill a fat pamphlet.

Wheaton, Mrs. Jeanie Dunlaps: New York, (New York)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

She has no doubt that Edwards remembers his neighbors the Dunlaps when they were all children together in Toledo. Then Edwards went away and by and by she heard that he was a professor at Notre Dame. Edwards has chosen a life that is agreeable to him. She thinks she knows where he stands on more than one question of the day from some of his speeches as a boy. Edwards was opposed to war. Mr. Wagnier of Benziger Brothers advised her to send a book to Edwards' care for review in the Ave Maria.

Wilkin, W(illia)m S.: Bay City, Mich(igan)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

He mailed Edwards a copy of "The Michigan Sugar Beet". The sugar beet industery is new in the state and has made wonderful headway. Lumber in this section has all been cut and their only hope to start something new; and now they have 20 coal mines and a great sugar and chicory center. The state gives a bounty of one cent per pound on sugar. This year the bounty will amount to half a million. He would be pleased to have Edwards pay them a visit.

 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

He has not forgotten his promise to send some relics of Archbishop W(illiam) H. Gross. He will not be able to do much but will do the best he can. He found some old papal bulls but it best not to spirit them away from the archives lest he might be caught.

Ganss, Father H(enry) G.: Carlisle, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ganss may be able to adapt "The Plaint of Our Lady" for some hymn appropriate for the Blessed Sacrament or Sacred Heart. Ganss asks Hudson to send a copy of "Mariology" to J L. Repplier, Reading, P(ennsylvani)a. He is a brother of Agnes Repplier, who underwent an operation in Philadelphia for malignant cancer. The (Charles Augustus) Briggs denouement was some surprise to Ganss. He came to the conclusion that Bishop (Henry Codman) Potter would not dare to ordain him. The day before his last departure Briggs dropped Ganss a pathetic note. He complains of the bitterness with which some of our Catholic papers attacked his address given at New Haven.

Nash, E. W.: Omaha, Nebraska
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Edwards will furnish Louis with sufficient to pay his debts. Within reasonable bounds he does not care about the money Louis spends so long as it does not interfere with his studies. He seems interested in electricity. His reports are not brilliant.

Meagher, Louis: Frankfort, K(entuck)y
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

As his eyes have been bad he kept putting off answering Edwards' letter. He sees that Notre Dame (University) is sending her colors nearer and nearer the front every day by her athletes. John received a place as clerk in the big whiskey combine. Louis wants to graduate at the Frankfort High School next year and he has some work to make up, so he cannot attend the commencement. Edwards must come down this summer.

(Stone), C.P., Father Fidelis: Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stone had not time to write about Venerable Gabriel. There is a sketch of him by Lady Herbert with a preface by Cardinal Vaughan. Stone leaves Rome on Monday next for England where he will have work to do which will keep him there all summer. Very likely Hudson will hear from Father Edmund (Hill, C.P.), in regard to a miraculous cure. Certain aspects of the case render it imperative that they should be slow in putting it before the public.
