Seton, Mgr. Robert:
Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Edwards' letter from Detroit was a great treat to him. Everything went off well at the wedding in Columbus. Seton did not fail to recall Edwards to Mr. Tom Steele. Seton met Steele's cousinFather (Hugh) Ewing, a remarkable fine young priest. Seton heard something about the late Bishop (John A.) Watterson and his financial methods as well as his peculiar way in other things which certainly do not reveal him in a favorable light.

Taunton, Father Ethelred L.:
Bath, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Taunton is at present homeless, but Downside Abbey always finds him. He has read the "Civilita". Father (karl) Brandi, (S.J.), must be hard up! His sorites is: Americanism is anti-Jesuitism. Therefore, Jesuitism is anti-American. The underlying syllogism is: who opposes Jesuitism is an opponent of Catholicism. Taunton thinks the G(anganelli) Letters can be proven authentic. He liked Hudson's reply in the last letter of the Ave Maria. In Some monasteries especially in those under the new Fenian ideas, an impossible observance is set on foot. Does Hudson see in the "Messenger" a deliberate attempt to keep Hudson out of the Catholic press?

Edwards does not know how sorry they are not to have him with them today. But such is life. There is not much chance of his returning to Notre Dame. Edwards knows how he feels toward some people there. It will be a good thing for Notre Dame if he does not come back. If he goes to M(ichigan) or Cornell he will stop at N.D. for a couple of hours to have a last look at the old place.

Hudson astonishes her when he speaks of a sale of 1,000 copies of a book being considered an average success. She has decided to try to regain what she has lost, chiefly by writing Catholic stories, in the wider field which she left to do this work.

Father (John B.) Scheier told him that Veneziani was more successful last year. He saw a letter from Washington in the Chronicle where Maurice Francis (Egan) receives on Friday evenings on Capitol Hill poets, orators, statesmen, diplomats, etc. It was Maurice himself sending the news. Lambert, Father I. A.:

to Henry F. Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
(Patrick Francis) Cardinal Moran has asked Father Lambert to provide some papers to be read at the Australian Catholic Congress to be held after Easter in 1900, and he appeals to Brownson as one of four or five writers competent to supply such papers. He sends him a copy of the circular and syllabus which the Cardinal sent him. In his private letter he said that he and the committee do not wish to limit the subjects to those given in the syllabus, so Brownson may select any subject. As the Cardinal mentions the name of (Orestes A. Brownson) in No. 25, Father Lambert is sure that a paper from the son of the great American Philosopher would be especially gratifying, and he has written to the Cardinal that he has appealed to Brownson. The last week in December will be time enough, but Father Lambert would like to know now whether he can count on him. He intends to get a paper from Notre Dame if possible, and also from the Catholic University and the Paulist Fathers of New York.
