Ganss, Father H(enry) G.: Carlisle, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ganss' requiem mass is now in the hands of the publishers. His reading on the Middle Ages and the Reformation will be embodied in a series of articles on Martin Luther for the "Catholic Quarterly". He is half afraid of their aggressive character; Archbishop (Patrick John) Ryan is abnormally afraid of controversy. For the Ave Maria he is working on an article on "The Composer of the Salve Regina". If his appointment as chancellor of the diocese does not interfere he hopes to have it ready for December. Ganss' pamphlet on "Protestantism and the Bible" made little progress since he wrote last.

Riordan, M( ) J.: Flagstaff, Arizona
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

"Munsey's" October issue advertises James M. King's "Facing the Twentieth Century". "North American Review", "The Forum" and "Review of Reviews" are going to advertise it also. Riordan suggests that Hudson rouse every Catholic society to protest against the insult to Catholics. He encloses copies of correspondence relating to this matter. He asks Hudson not to use the name of (Harrison) Conrard as he does not wish it.

 Enclosure:

1899 Sep. 16

American Union League Society New York, (New York)
 to Harrison Conrard: Flagstaff, Ariz(ona)

"McClure's" have declined to insert the advertisement of "Facing the Twentieth Century". This means that the Romanists recognize they have confronted a book written by a scholarly man, and that they will use all their power to curtail its circulation. A communication from Doran B. Eaton says that this book should be read by a great number of our intelligent voters. There is a fear, as expressed by T(homas) E. Watson, that while our politicians continue to be cowards and Protestant ministers continue to be dupes, Catholic diplomacy will be compelled to fight for its dear life. The "McClure" incident shows they are well intrenched. Signed by W.J.D.

Schulte, Father A. J.: Iowa City, Iowa
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Mrs. F. B. Place is not personally known to him. Last year she and her son boarded with a sister of hers there. The boy Frank was baptized by Archbishop Seghers under the condition that he be brought up a Catholic. This he thinks she is intending to do, but his attendance at church and school left much to be desired. He does not know how she makes her living.

H(udson), C.S.C., FatherD(aniel) E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Brownson is probably right about the Latin of the "Imitation," probably a case of not letting well enough alone. Father Hudson has read the sheets with the greatest interest but has not yet decided how to use certain passages he has marked. It helps to quote even a few lines referrings to (Orestes A. Brownson) or to give extracts from his writings, as a lot of these "corners" published in the Ave Maria proved. Brownson's paper for the Australian Congress will help to make his father's writings better known there. Father Hudson has been asked to furnish a paper and intends to urge the introduction of standard Catholic books into the public libraries, things like Brownson's Works. Brownson is to prepare a paper if he possibly can. (Patrick Francis) Cardinal Moran is full of energy and zeal, and the bishops all seem to be live men, eager to make the best use of all opportunities. "Brownson's Middle Life" is intensely interesting. How little American Catholics know and appreciate his services, but his time will come. Brownson could not have performed a more important life work than to edit and publish his writings. The biography crowns the work. He will be glad to have the extract from St. Gregory when convenient.

Neither of these two parties has paid anything yet, though Father Farrelly will remit on the 20th.

Yesterday Father (Peter C.) York(e) dropped in on Stoddard. He is just back from Europe on his way to Frisco. He may stop at Notre Dame. Yorke was born in Ireland but is so thoroughly americanized that he hopes the Shamrock will be defeated. Stoddard was sworn in at the Varsity yesterday. M(aurice) F(rancis) E(gan) is back after an asthmatic attack. He seemed soured yesterday.

Brownson, H(enry) F.: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Father C(harles) J. McElroy of Derby, Connecticut is the only inquirer who has made use of Hudson's reference to Brownson about his father's works. Brownson will see if he can send some short extracts. He is glad Hudson is going to take a hand in the Australian Congress. Efforts have been made in many cases to get libraries to purchase his father's works.

Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, Wis(consin)
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Brownson is to send Doyle a copy of "Brownson's Middle Life" as soon as it is published. Father (Henry W.) Otting, S.J., has finished Newman's Essay of Development and says that even the most charitably disposed cannot accept chapters 7 and 9. Doyle fears that his last letter bored Brownson. He has loaned Archbishop (Frederic X.) Katzer, at his request, the first two volumes of Brownson's Works and also Henry's "Faith and Science," as he wishes to get an idea of his father's views on philosophy. The Archbishop gave Doyle the Abbe Delassus's "L'Americanisme et la Conjuration Antichretienne".

Conway, Katherine E.: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's letter and the proof-slips came. It will be in a conspicuous place in her next issue. They go to press Tuesday morning. Conway is delighted with Hudson's article. What is the motive of these people who try to make out that Hudson is no longer conducting the Ave Maria. The preposterousness of the charge shows that the concentration on possible heresy trails leads to a species of unbalancement. Where did Conway see a letter in which the writer was shocked at Hudson's calling attention to the religious ignorance of certain Italian immigrants.

1899 Oct. 18
Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, Wis(consin)
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Doyle called Archbishop (Frederic X. Katzer)'s attention to the importance of keeping in mind the dates of the articles and asked him to read Brownson's introduction. He has a very high opinion of Brownson. Brownson has seen pages 511-512 of the Ave Maria for October 14; and Doyle encloses a clipping (which is pinned to the letter) from the Review of Reviews, which has longer extracts; the date of the letter quoted in the Ave Maria is Dec. 3, 1875. Perhaps the souls of the peoples of the Latin races are not of as much account as those of the English, and perhaps the Latin races must be shaken off; but if one judges by what Heckerism, abetted by certain American prelates, is doing in France, the Latin races are being taught to leave the Church. He sends Brownson the Abbe Delassus's work, hoping to call for it early in December. P.S.: He has been informed that Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C., is no longer Editor of the Ave Maria, that he objected to the publication of the Ganganelli letters and was superceded by someone more in accord with ( ).

Seton, Mgr. Robert: Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He feels mortified sometimes at Edwards' generosity in sending him so many fine books. His book will be in the publisher's hands next week. He is delighted to be remembered by so many distinguished ones at Notre Dame. He is somewhat disappointed in Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.) The "Ave Maria" has degenerated from its earlier all-spiritual tone. Hudson brings in many current political matters.

Guiney, Louise I(mogen): Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Guiney slips in a paragraph about a paper which Hudson often quotes and which she suspects he likes. She does not know the Weekly Register's new enemies but she loves them for the enemies they make.

 Enclosure:

(An Article headed) The Weekly Register. Many American Catholics who acknowledge the superiority of the English religious press, know "The Tablet". But not one in fifty has heard of "The Weekly Register". It was founded a half century ago by Henry Wilberforce. Under Cardinal Manning it was edited by Wilfrid Meynell. Their chief characteristic is that they have ideas to burn. The Register's temper is facile, sunny and chivalrous. It has the serviceable convert point of view, as the Tablet has the blunt hereditary caste point of view. (Signed) G.

Starbuck, Charles C.: Cambridge, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Starbuck thought there would be some malicious remark upon Hudson's publishing the Ganganelli letters. Abraham Lincoln was always unintelligible to men of categories. He seems to have had no great skill of administration; but he had a wonderful power of the supernatural. Starbuck sees from the Tablet that Dr. (James?) Orr of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland has been examining the evidence as to the relative number of Christians under Constantine. He thinks evidence favors between one third and one half.

Lanier, Charles D.: New York, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

The editors of several Catholic papers have criticized the American Monthly "Review of Reviews" in advertising J(ames) M(arcus) King's book, "Facing the Twentieth Century". The advertisement was presented when Albert Shaw, the editor, and Lanier were absent. Neither Shaw nor the manager of the business office had heard of the advertisement of the book until after the magazine was issued. Nothing could be further from their interest than offense to their Catholic readers.

Bernard, (C.S.C.), Sister M.:
St. Mary's Academy, Austin, Texas
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Longer silence than she wished for has been theirs. She made up her mind that she must write to the good professor. The weather there would roast one alive but it is beginning to get cool now. She gets so lonesome for Notre Dame and would like to hear from Mother Ascension. She would like to hear all about her nephew in the Minim department. Some time ago Edwards gave her a relic of the saint that was under the altar in the church. She asks the name of the saint.
