Fraser, Mary Crawford: (Rome, Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Fraser thanks Hudson for the book of "Helpful Thoughts". She gave Hudson's message to her brother, (Francis Marion Crawford) who is always glad that his work does good. Why say in the Ave Maria things about the war which is writing their hearts so terribly. Her son is away at the front with many English Catholics fighting for what their country knows to be a righteous cause.

Tuttle, Geo(rge) M.: Warren, Ohio
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Tuttle has Brownson's answer to an inquiry about Brownson's Works, made by his bookseller at Tuttle's suggestion. He can buy only two or three volumes now, and he wishes to know whether he can buy these at the discount of one-third. He has the "Life" already. He read some of Orestes A. Brownson 56 years ago and was much interested in his thinking and writing, though not extensively. He has read the two volumes of the Life with much new interest, and the old interest has revived.

to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Archibishop Elder deferred answering Brownson's letter of the 20th until the could have a box of old letters examined. He finds he has nine from (Orestes A. Brownson). He does not remember receiving more than one from him, and that before the Confederate War. There may be some left in Natchez, and if Brownson cam get any from there he is welcome to publish them. He does not know whether in the published works Brownson gave his father's "Oration to the Philomathean Society of Mt. St. Mary's College, Emmitaburg," which is of very particular interest and value because he testifies to the impulse given to public school education under the counsel of Fanny wright expressly to continue the work of her lectures against Chirstianity. Brownson should make it widely known.

S(eton), Mgr. Robert: Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He cannot understand such a miscarriage of the book which Brentano's sent him. Last Monday he met with a most disagreeable and dangerous accident. He walked off a cable car in motion with consequences of a terrible fall on the pavement. His face was cut up but his head was not fractured owing to the stiff brim of the silk hat he was wearing. He hasn't the least idea of Zucker's pamphlet except that it was an attack on religious orders. He asks Edwards to be careful how he communicates Seton's changed opinion of the Ave Maria to Father Hudson.

S(eton), Mgr. R(obert): Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana )

Edwards' welcome letter came just as he left the chapel where they had Mass for Sister Scholastica, it being her feast day. Thorn's style is simply brutal, but his remarks on Markham's Man with the Hoe are quite just. It surprises him that Edwards has not received the books yet.

He does not know that it will be of any practical use here and therefore Brownson may keep it as another momento of his distinguished father; besides, as it is to appear in print, it will be within the reach of any one interested in it.

to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

He thought he could remedy the evil by putting into the children's hands other manuals written in a Catholic spirit. Knowing Edwards to be a professor of history in the best Catholic institution of the country, he asks Edwards to recommend manuals.

He understands Teddy is growing a few eye-winkers on his face so that he will look like a musician.

He sends Brownson a copy of Hardy's "But Yet a Woman," which he liked very well some years ago when he read it. He is glad that the sick boy is well again, and sends his respects to Mrs. Brownson. Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, Wis(consin)
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Doyle encloses an Express Order for $20 for the 9 volumes which will complete his set of Brownson's works, and has notified his bookseller to send Brownson the number of the Contemporary Review which contains Newman's letters. As he supposed Brownson had read (Wilfred) Ward's Life of his father, he made no quotations from the "Apologia," as Ward quotes freely from it. He will have to qualify his criticism of Wilfred Ward and acknowledge that his interpretation of Wiseman's sermon was an anticipation of Newman's theory. He asks Brownson if he has read Ward's Life of Cardinal Wiseman.

Brownson is to send Father Mullen one volume of Brownson's Works in which the sanctity of the Church is discussed, as he wishes to show what sanctity is, that it was a mark of the Church established by Christ, that no Protestant church has that mark, and that the Catholic Church alone possesses it. He will be glad to have any volume which Brownson thinks will be most useful; he already has already has Volume 5; and he will remit when he knows the price.
