J(ulia, C.S.C.,) Sister M.:
Woodland, (California)
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
Edwards' letter was a great surprise to her. Their letters are not opened since the Superior went to St. Mary's. She is sorry to hear that he is ill. She advises him to take the world easy and God will fix everything in His own good time. She hears often from Sister Felicia.

McCullough, W. J.:
Davenport, Iowa
to James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana
He wrote Father Morrissey regarding his son whom he hopes to have at Notre Dame in the Fall. Bert had completed the four years Latin course in the local high school. If Notre Dame will accept the certificate of his work instead of requiring an entrance examination, it will be doing what all the state universities are doing. The fact that Edwards was still at Notre Dame was a strong factor in his deciding to send Bert to Notre Dame.

to J(ames) F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
Will Daily of Indianapolis called on him not long ago; he has been elected a judge in that district. It always seems good to see any of the old boys from Notre Dame. Daily was a hard worker at College. The weather is something awful; he is thankful that he is not fat. He is getting gray fast with three boys and three girls. His father resigned from his work at Eastlake and has been travelling in the west since.

Dubuque, (Iowa)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
Undoubtedly Edwards thinks that he has forgotten him but such is not the case. The reason is that he is just crazy over rowing. Since he came home he has spent all his time in the water and has not taken a meal with the family. He has not smoked and the folks think it is great. Louis Nash plays golf all day. Myers is going into the factory in September.

Welch, S.J., E(dward) H.:
Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Father Daniel (E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Welch thanks Hudson for the catalog. Father Tim must have returned by this time. Welch saw Father (John F?) Quirk, (S.J.), a few days ago; he says Father ( ) Chadlier is still vigorous. One of Welch's conovices celebrates his golden jubilee today. The next on the list will be Father (Patrick?) Healy, (S.J.), in September. Welch gave a retreat at Villanova. Holy Cross (College) at Worcester is looking up. There were 46 graduates this year, 35 of whom are for the priesthood.

Coppens, S.J., Father C(harles):
St. Louis, (Missouri)
to (Henry F.) Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Concerning Brownson's question about (Orestes A. Brownson)'s statement, "In His essence God is triune," Father Coppens is certain that it is not a formal heresy, nor any kind of heresy, if explained as Henry explains it. Still the sentence unexplained will be objected to by many, because it is unusual with theologians and because it is capable of being twisted out of its true meaning by blundering minds. As to Father (Gio. Giuseppe) Franco's work on telepathy, Father (Joseph) Grimmelsman, S.J., the Provincial, thinks it will not answer well for this country and should not be translated. Therefore, he will not bother Brownson with it. Father Coppens is fresher after giving three octidua in close succession this vacation than when he began them. Brownson must pray for poor Father (Philip J.) Roos, S.J., who is dying a slow death with senile gangrene, in Omaha, and will probably die within a month. Brownson is to take care of his health, so that he may yet produce many good things.

Meaux, V(icom)te de:
Excotay, Montbrison, Loire, (France)
to (Henry F. Brownson):
(Detroit, Michigan)
When de Meaux received Brownson's letter he was not at Escotay where he keeps the papers of (Charles-Forbes-Rene, Comte) de Montalembert. When he returned he did not neglect to look for (Orestes A. Brownson)'s letters, but he recalls that the correspondence relating to America is now to be found in the hands of Father (Edouard) Le Canuet, who is preparing a third volume intended to complete the biography of Montalembert. However, he has written to him to find out what remains of the precious correspondence which Brownson wants. But Le Canuet has been absent from Paris, where he left his papers, for there is in France now an age of vacanies and it is a bad time for studies. Le Canuet did not reply to de Meaux's letter for several weeks and this is the cause of his delay in replying to Brownson, for which he apologizes. As soon as he can he will send Brownson's letters in return for those of Montalembert, and in the meantime sends a small volume, in which both are mentioned, though too briefly. At least Brownson will recognize in these pages the sympathy of a French Catholic for the American Church and the sentiments which unite the two men in their common trials. Are not the trials now (Americanism) being gone through by Catholic Americans equal to those which were inflicted 40 years ago on the French by the Encyclical Quanta Cura and the Syllabus? They can therefore join hands across the ocean.

Glennon, Bishop John J(oseph):
Kansas City, Missouri
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):

The Bishop's Roman speech is in line with all his previous work. It is strong and Glennon fancies that some of the passages caused the Avis Romani to shake their heads. He is a little metaphysical to be popular.

(Schmidt), Oscar:
Cleveland, Ohio
to (James F. Edwards):
He heard that Edwards took a trip abroad. He wishes he could have gone. He can hardly believe that Edwards has been away from home over seven months. He wishes he could spend another year at the dear old college. It is not true that Madge Daly is going to marry a doctor in Paris. Frank McCullough's brother is sending his son Bert to Notre Dame. Bert is a good student and a fine athelete and mandolin player. Schmidt asks Edwards to help him along.

The reason he didn't write was that he met a nice young lady on the Pretoria who occupied most of his time. The voyage was very pleasant lasting only ten days. Things were not changed at home except that one of his dogs had six pups. He asks Edwards to bring him two sword canes like Folk's.
