Bessell, Geo. E.:
Mount Vernon, N(ew) Y(ork)
to (James F.) Edwards:
He has just received estimate for making a copy of bust of Archbishop Corrigan in plaster. As a mould has to be made to get a copy the expense is in the mould. If Edwards is in no hurry he will see Father Connolly. secretary to the Archbishop, regarding copies for some of the institutions founded by the Archbishop. The cost of each copy would then be from $10 to $15.

He cannot fancy how disappointed she was that she was not in town when he wrote. They must have been thinking of each other at the same time as she wrote to him and addressed it to Notre Dame. She has a picture of her father that Edwards would like.

Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.:
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (James E.) Edwards:
He had an attack of malaria and had to go to the infirmary. His work is discouragingly behindhand. It was pleasant to learn that Edwards is having a visit with Mgr. Seton. He hears Seton is going back to Rome to spend his days. The chapter elected Mother Perpetua as Mother-General. Sister Aquina got her old place. Mother Lucretia will probably return to Salt Lake. Father (Petro) Franciscus (C.S.C.) was changed to Professed House; Father (Thomas) Corbett, (C.S.C.), Corby Hall; Father (William A.) Olmsted was named for the Ave Maria office, though it is rumored that he has left the Community. Hudson rejoices to hear of Edwards' acquisitions for the library and Memorial Hall.

O'Rourke, (Father) W(illiam) F.:
Cin(cinna)ti, O(hio)
to H(enry) F. Brownson:
Detroit, Mich(igan)
Father O'Rourke thought of other points which he wishes to lay before Brownson in a second letter. He believes ex corde all that the Church teaches but there is much that passes current for theology that he does not believe. O'Rourke lists ten statements on which he asks Henry to comment as to whether or not, he as a Catholic, can hold them. Father O'Rourke considers that the theology and philosophy taught in American institutions is not only inadequate but also false and erroneous. And the clergy is unable and unequipped to combat atheism and its presence throughout society. The blame is laid upon the stubborness of the Jesuits, badly educated newspaper editors, indifference, lack of knowledge and education of our Bishops. He cites the kind of theology the Jesuits and others are allowed to lay before non-Catholic people without a word of rebuke from the Bishops. If, what they teach their hearers and readers is Catholic teaching, then he does not know Catholic doctrine.

O'Rourke, (Father) W(illiam) F.:
Cin(cinna)ti, O(hio)
to H(enry) F. Brownson:
Detroit, Mich(igan)
Father O'Rourke asks Brownson if the third and fourth volumes of the life of Orestes A. Brownson have yet been published and, if so, he requests the volumes for which he will forward a check. Brownson may help him solve two philosophical questions which he cannot satisfactorily solve himself. The first point is the "Genera and Species, and generation and contradiction in posterity and propogation of original sin". He wishes to know the contents of the Genus. Stating that he believes all that the Church teaches, he discusses the question of the creation of souls and the dogma of Transubstantiation. Can natural terms be used when speaking about the supernatural? He feels certain that Brownson understands his problems and is capable of solving them, having learned from (Orestes A. Brownson), whom Father O'Rourke considers the greatest man America ever produced and a holy saint in heaven.

Doyle, W(illia)m T.:
Milwaukee, Wis(consin)
to (Henry F. Brownson):
(Detroit, Michigan)
Doyle calls Brownson's attention to an article in the last issue of the Tablet on Justice Day, who knew he was a Catholic and was surprised that other people were Catholics. He is sending a copy of the Tablet, July 27, in which a leader on Lord Halifax's letter is given. Another article by Brownson on the development theory would call attention to the life of Orestes Brownson. Doyle requests a copy of Faith & Science.

Bellord, Bishop James:
Gibraltar
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Bellord will write to the Catholic Truth Society to send copies of his catechism at once. He hopes to be leaving there forever within a few days. The Spanish clerical spirit has been sufficiently strong to prevail against his attempts to level up Church matters and clerical discipline towards the standards of America and England. The decadence of the Iberian Peninsula lays at the doors of the clergy.

Spalding, Bishop J(ohn) L(ancaster):
Peoria, Ill(inois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Spalding thanks Hudson for copies of the Detroit speech. While at Mackinac he met Sara O'Neill, a sister of Mrs. ( ) Cudahy; she is interested in bringing Catholic books to the attention of Protestants. Spalding returns Bishop (George Michael) Lenihan's letter. Father (Daniel J.) Riordan is entirely well again. The Catholics in Detroit are numerous, intelligent and seem to have much influence. Spalding was pleased with Archbishop (Paul) Bruchesi. In the midst of much to sadden it is pleasing to know that there is much to console them.

Delany, Bishop Patrick:
Hobart, (Tasmania)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
In an article on the Church and the Lodge the writer tells us that the Catholic secret societies now offer a Catholic all he wants. They at the other end of the globe imagined that such societies were incompatible with Catholic discipline. If Catholic societies are secret in the sense of Masonry, then the time has come for all to know the fact.

E(des), E(lla) B.:
Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The Jesuits are all away and their respective houses closed for the summer. Edes wrote Father (Salvatore) Brandi, (S.J.), about the picture of St. Aloysius. What does Hudson think of those books of Henrietta Dana Skinner? Edes knew both husband and wife years ago. Her first book was a species of society libel directed against the late Princess Altieri, who would never notice the American Marchesa, Lily Conrady. Edes' servant has died. A second servant also died. The servants are a perfect canaille. Could Hudson asks Father (John A.) Zahm, C.S.C., what he took to cure his insomnia?

Fitte, C.S.C., Father S(tanislaus) F.:
Notre Dame, (Indiana)
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
He had three pleasant weeks among his friends, and spent them partly in the mountains thinking it would be the best means to get rid of malaria. He lost eight pounds of flesh but he still has too much of it. Next Monday the Bishop of Detroit dedicates the church in Lapeer, Michigan and Father (Andrew) Morrissey, (C.S.C.) is to preach. There is a scandal brewing in the shape of a book. Edwards will know it soon enough. (P.S.) Father (Louis) Letourneau (C.S.C.) has been appointed Assistant General a sinecure, but anyhow it is a kind of reparation for the past.
