(Carroll, Francis E.) Frank:
Boston, (Massachusetts)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He is so busy he will send Edwards some memento at a later date for Christmas. He received Edwards' remembrance and sends many thanks. He has been pursuing the study of close application to human thoughts and ideas. Of all the prefects, Brother Leaner, (C.S.C.) has a niche in his memory.

(Schmidt), Oscar:
El Paso, Texas
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He supposes Edwards thinks he is worse than a bumble bee for flitting from one spot to another. He is staying there a day or so to take in a bull fight at Jaurez, Mexico, across the border. His bronchial trouble is disappearing. After while he will remain in Hot Springs until Christmas, then on to California. He wishes Edwards could join him. El Paso is very much of a Catholic town. There are some wonderful old places at Santa Fe and Las Vegas.

(Huffer), Herman:
Paris, (France)
to (James F. Edwards:

Edwards' letter to Mama gave them all pleasure but they were sorry to hear that he had been ill. They miss Edwards very much. Barnum and Baileys' American Circus gave their first representation on Saturday and over 12,000 people were there. They read of the terrible railroad accident out west and right away thought of Edwards. Herman is going to Bremen for two or three years.

Cambridgeport, Mass(achusetts)
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
With this letter Father (Thomas J.) Scully transmits to Edwards a relic of the Ursuline Convent at Charlestown, Massachusetts, burnt during the Know-nothing days. Scully bought land from E.R. Luke, a hay and grain merchant who at the time of the destruction of the convent was employed in a store at East Cambridge where he heard frequent mutterings about the burning of the convent and on the day itself open jokes about going to the fire. The cross was found in the ruins and was given to Scully by Luke's son many years later.

It seems as this year would end as it started and bring her but sorrow. Mrs. Orsbach's half brother Fritz Krug thought to interfere with the estate she left and cause Mrs. Rhodius trouble. She had to tell Judge Walker all about the will Mrs. Orsbach made. George is nice to her.

Seton, Mgr. Robert:
Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He has been very ill since last Monday and is now out of danger. William (Seton) came down to see him at once. Edwards ought to write his sister Elizabeth. He is sure that she has some things of his father's that she will give to Edwards. She has the Grande Medaille given by the Sacred Heart Convent at Paris to his sister Emily who was the only American ever to receive the prize. His friend Monsignor Panici wants him to let him know a week before his arrival in Rome because he recommends a house where prelates stay. It would look like going back on Panici if he went to Via Cappucini now.

to (James F. Edwards:

Edwards' letter was most heartily greeted only they were sorry to hear that he has been feeling so poorly. It is imprudent of him to have so taxed his strength. Herman will leave home to enter upon his business training in Bremen. Edwards can imagine how hard this separation will be for them. For the first few months Herman will stay at a friend's house. She is grateful that her boy is on the threshhold of his father's career. The winter is extremely mild.

O'Sullivan, Father T(imothy) D.:
Chicago, Ill(inois)
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana
A line from an old friend brings up a thousand pleasant reminiscences of the past. Such is Edwards' favor of Sunday. Old men like himself enjoy the old things best. He expressed Edwards' thanks to Miss Cooke. She says that the lunch from a culinary point of view was a failure owing to her illness. She is still ill but in no danger. Miss Murphy thinks professors are the sweetest of men.

He was delighted to hear from Edwards. To be remembered by one's friends is amongst the greatest pleasures of life His ugly bronchial irritation has practically disappreard. This will be his first Christmas away from home in his 26 years. He still thinks Mrs. Fish is the dearest of all women he has ever met. He is going back to New Mexico to join in a duck hunt with some army officers. He is a lonely devil away out there.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
O'Neill does not think he ought to make any copy out of Daniel O'Connell's "Songs from Bohemia". The Bohemia which O'Connell frequented was altogether different from that of (John) Boyle O'Reilly. The good poems are so mixed up with unworthy matter and sensual suggestiveness that he can't understand literary executors allowing half the contents to appear at all.

Seton, Mgr. Robert:

to (James F.) Edwards:
Notre Dame, (Indiana)
He sails from the Hamburg-American pier on Jan. 4 as this will give his parishioners opportunity to see him off. Augustus Revere, younger brother of the late Paul Revere, is not a Catholic; he approved the idea of having some of his curios and things left by his father, a convert, go to Notre Dame for safe-keeping. Edwards must not tell Father Flynn pastor at Morristown why he is visiting Revere. Father York of Brooklyn, a friend of Elizabeth Seton, his sister, can put Edwards on the trace of something in the Brooklyn diocese. Edwards knows the prudence of not letting people know what he is after.

to James (F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He was much pleased to receive a card from Edwards. Today like all hilidays is rather a blue day. He can hardly believe his Notre Dame days are so many years in the past except when he sees his two big kids. He would not be back twenty years for anything. In the shake-up of May 9th, he lost about $36,000. He is no longer looking for easy things. Edwards has not been very sociable during the past ten years, but he hopes he will come up during the summer. He is renewing his youth by wading thru Caesar with George.

He draws Brownson's attention to F. H. O'Donnell's letter which furnishes a good argument for the suppression of the Jesuits as poor educators. Edwards is an indefatigable traveller and a superlatively good correspondent. Yes, Edwards should write to him and address the letters to plain "Monsignor Seton".
