1902 Mar. 1
Stockley, W(illiam) F.: Fredericton, N(ew) B(runswick)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Is it wise to send a ms. without asking Hudson beforehand? Could Hudson make use of the Aubrey de Vere letter? Stockley quotes the Baltimore Council. As the "Tablet" lately said outsiders think that in the Catholic Church it is all pay, pay, pay. But this scandal-talking age is meant to be saved. Stockley has two papers to send. He had in mind something on intolerance stirred by Cardinal Newman in the last Ave Maria and by some private letters of (Charles C.) Starbuck.

(Carroll, Francis E.) Frank: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has just received the water for analysis; it shows progress. Edwards will now continue to improve. Being a man of careful rules in living, the even tenor of his life will assert itself and support him in nature's ways. Carroll sends some medicine and tells Edwards how to take it.

1902 Mar. 5
Kailey, L( ) L. A.: Pueblo, Colo(rado)
 to Father E. D. (! Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Kailey thinks that when he explains the real status of "Mathematical Harmonies" Hudson will not think the Catholic World has any proprietary rights. It was first published in the "Democratic Review" in 1847. Judge (Alfred W.) A(rrington) rewrote it some years before his death. It was found among his papers; Kailey showed it to Father (John Joseph) Keane, (now Archbishop) who decided to republish it and sent it to the Catholic World. After its publication in the "World" Kailey was sent a "Chicago Times" containing an article from a spiritualist in Kansas claiming it for Andrew Jackson Davis. He learned Davis had incorporated it into a book called "Arabula". As the work of a convert to the Church it is especially adapted to the inquiring student.

1902 Mar. 7
Nash, Louis Charles: Omaha, Neb(raska)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

He sends the stamps which Edwards wanted. Mrs. Robinson is certainly a very charming woman, with an unlucky past. He supposes Edwards has been working like a goat for the college and receiving thanks for it, he doesn't think. Edwards has done enough for "The Honor and Glory of God" for one man.

Folk, J. A(lbert): Joliet, Ill(inois)
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

He is working at the mill again but with a better job. He is now on the telephone switch-board. He wrote to Herbert but he has not answered. His mother is still troubled with rheumatism.

He has not yet found out the bill for the freight charges on Father Magnell's set of works. If the freight agent reports it, he will settle the charges for both sets at the same time.

Schwab, Gertrude de S.: Atlantic City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Even at this late date she wants to try to express her appreciation of his kindness to her while at Notre Dame. She is so proud of the little dish of Father Sorin's which Edwards gave her. She feels Edwards was giving up a great deal in parting with it. She is sorry that he cannot have the coveted picture of Father Gallitzin which Father Hudson gave her.

Carne, W(illia)m F.: Alexandria, V(irgini)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

God knows what is ahead of them but certainly they can gather up the truth that floats on the sea of error. Carne feels free to send two more suggestive paragraphs.

1902 Mar. 14
Egan, Maurice, Francis: Washington, D. C.
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

He has heard lately of some very kind things Edwards has said of him. He must honestly say if he were as disinterested and as constant as Edwards in his love for the ideal, he should have less need of humility. Edwards has always believed that whatever mistakes Egan has made, he is neither malicious nor unforgiving.

1902 Mar. 14
Parker, W. Th(ornton): Northampton, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson may remember that the Angelus and the Ave Maria warned him for referring to the man who had been in the Catholic Church fifteen years and talked of returning to Protestantism. Parker sends the man's letter. He is becoming antagonistic to the lies preached upon Protestants to keep them away from the Catholic fold.

1902 March 20
(Rhodius), George: (Indianapolis, Indiana)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

The existence he is living there is enough to drive anybody insane. It is now five o'clock in the morning and he has not been able to close his eyes the entire night. He is awfully worried. This is absolutely no place for him.

1902 Mar. 22
Brownson, H(enry) F.: Detroit, Mich(igan)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It would be likely to get Brownson into trouble with the booksellers to advertise the works at $45 and then charge $36. Brownson thinks that the editor of the Am(erican) Eccl(esiastical) Review makes a mistake in regard to proper names in the Bible. A friend wrote that Father Eugene (A.) Magevny, (S.J.), said Brownson's works should be in every priest's library, and yet the he found many who did not know where to get them.

1902 Mar. 28
Rhodius, M(arie) by W.: Indianapolis, Indiana
to J(ames) F. (Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

George is going to Chicago. She does not know how long he will stay and when he will go to Notre Dame. Charley's father does not understand what those different charges are for. It is too bad Charles quit the French course; the books cost so much. If only George is not getting Charles to talk too freely!

1902 Mar. 28
(Rhodius), George: Indianapolis, Indiana
to J(ames) F. (Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Keep up courage? He asks how long does Edwards expect him to do it. There must be a change and soon at that. If he cannot enjoy life now, he asks when is he expected to do it.

Sanford, Benj(amin) C.: St. Louis, M(issouri)
to (James F. Edwards): Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was ill in bed when Edwards' letter came. He was sorry he missed the track meet. Having gone into the real estate business, he is pretty busy. Now and then he sees Henry Taylor who is trying to form a Notre Dame Association in St. Louis. There are about 40 from there who attended Notre Dame.

1902 Mar. 29
Montgomery, G(eorge), Bishop of Monterey and Los Angeles: Los Angeles, Cal(ifornia)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Bishop Montgomery sends Brownson a check to clear off Father (Patrick) Murphy's indebtedness knowing that he will return it sometime. Father Murphy is not dishonest but has a strange inconsistency in his nature. He will share his last dollar with a tramp but let a bill go unpaid. Repeated reminders to pay his bills go unheeded, though undoubtedly he has given away twenty times the amount of the bill since it was contracted. Bishop Montgomery is indebted both to Brownson and his distinguished father. A long time ago, he had urged Henry to write his father's biography. He probably does not remember it, but thanks him for editing his father's works. He could scarcely have done anything more valuable for the English speaking Catholic world and asks God to bless him for this work and to give him strength for future labors.

Nash, Louis Charles: Omaha, Neb(raska)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

To tell the truth he wished he was at Notre Dame, this morning. After Mass he had to hurry to the office to listen to a committed from Florence who want better car service. His company has bought two more lines and are building ten miles of new.

(Foley,) Gene: Chicago, Ill(inois)
 to (James F. Edwards):

She cannot begin to tell him how much she appreciates the beautiful "stem" Edwards sent as a wedding gift. Nothing she received pleased her more. Everytime she looks at it she thinks of the pleasant days she spent at Notre Dame with the donor.
