1903 Sept.-
(Rhodius), George: Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Any interest he might have had in young Mr. (Charles) Roesch is a thing of the past. When he had him go to Notre Dame it was merely a debt of gratitude to his mother. A decided change must be made. His mother never needed him so much as she does now but she does not realize it.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Cambridge, Massachusetts)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard is just back from Tuckernuck. He hopes the third hospital sketch may hurry to Hudson's hands. Stoddard quotes from a letter from Mrs. R(obert) L(ouis) S(tevenson): She no longer has Hudson's address. Nothing can ever make her think that (Robert) Louis (Stevenson) regretted his open letter to Dr. (C. M.) Hyde. His admiration for Father (Joseph) Damien (de Veuster, SS. CC.) remained unchanged. It is strange that when Stevenson was in his grave he should have been attacked by one who was bound to him by every tie of gratitude - (William Ernest) Henley.

(Wattson, Reverend Lewis Thomas), Father Paul James Francis, S.A.: Garrison, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

If they had a hope that the Society of the Atonement was a spiritual creation of God, that hope was crushed by the editorial "Love the Pope" in the Ave Maria. Instead of recognizing a divine mission at Graymoor both Father (John E.) Copus, (S.J.), and Hudson see only a few devout souls who are gradually being delivered out of the clutches of the Arch Deceiver. The trouble is with their major premise. If Hudson will dismiss his major proposition as a foregone conclusion and approach the claims of the S(ociety of the) A(tonement) to be of God in the spirit of a prayerful seeker after truth, Wattson will be glad to submit an account of the development of the Society. He asks for a frank reply from Hudson.
