1903 Dec. 2
Graffis, Jos. T.: Logansport, Ind(iana)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was glad to hear that Notre Dame has such fine luck in their football team. It was too bad they had to cancel their Thanksgiving game with Purdue (University). His brother Arthur was on the Purdue special and had a very narrow escape; his room-mate was killed and the fellow in front of him had his head cut off.

1903 Dec. 2
Seton, Archbishop Robert: Rome, Italy
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Last Monday was the great feast of the Scotch College. When he went up there to dine he saw the large banner of Scotland which he presented to the college hanging from the great upper window. Attending the dinner were the Rector Msgr. Fraser, Archbishop Bourne of Westminister, Archbishop Stoner, Msgr. Kennedy and Seton. In the afternoon Seton officiated at the Benediction. That evening he had his first audience with the Pope. The pope spoke with a kind soft voice and a sweet smile played about his mouth.

Schwab, Gertrude de S.: Genoa, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Schwab thanks Hudson for the books. She left home so hastily that she had no time to think of sending the picture. She hears that Father (John A.) Zahm, (C.S.C.), is now in Europe. They are happy to have Papa, Mamma and Mrs. Kinsey with them. Now that her brother is beginning to improve they are happier than ever. They are now aboard the yacht in the Bay of Genoa but will leave tomorrow for Naples.

F(elicia, C.S.C.), Sister M.: (Jacksonville, Illinois)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

If she wrote to Edwards as often as she thinks of him, it would be more than twice a day. How glad she would be to have a long talk with Edwards. She cannot believe that all the dear ones are gone. How often she thinks of Edwards and of the days that are gone.

1903 Dec. 8
Foley, M.J.: Chicago, Illionis
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The Souvenirs of Notre Dame will form a handsome addition to his collection. Notre Dame has always been noted for the generous hospitality she extends to her visitors. He hopes to have the opportunity of expressing good wishes to Father Morrissey in person very soon.

1903 Dec. 9
(O'Sullivan), Father Tim(othy) D.: (Chicago, Illinois)
to Father S(tanislaus F.) Fitte, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The late event was more a success; a triumph for religion, science, oratory and Notre Dame. He hopes the Major(Henry F. Brownson) will enjoy the occasion. (Edward Creighton) and William J. Onahan were delighted with their visit. Notre Dame was a revelation to the great philanthropist, Creighton, from Omaha, (Nebraska), who is a great admirer of Bishop (John L.) Spalding. He thanks Fitte, Father (Andrew) Morrissey, (C.S.C.) and (James F.) Edwards for their hospitality. ( ) Anderson and ( ) O'Reilley, of St. Cyril's headed the procession of about 80 people. They brought presents. Then came the speeches. Father (J D.) Crimmins claims he has invested $3,000 in improvements and paid off $4,000 of debts at Irondale, Illinois. The Deering Company furnishes him with electricity. He is with McCabe the banker and his wife on every occasion.

1903 Dec. 10
Moran, Emma Etheridge: (Detroit, Michigan)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards' letter is a fresh evidence of his kindly nature and the interest he has shown in her boy. Bill lacks application. She does not believe a cold would pull him down if he had applied himself properly during the term. Unless he applies himself they will not continue him in college.

XI-2-f - A.L.S. - 4pp. - 12mo. - {1}

1903 Dec. 10
Teeling, Theodora L. L.: Ealing, (England)

1903 Dec. 11
Carroll, Francis E.: Boston, Mass(achusetts)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Many of his thoughts are of Edwards whose photo is above his desk. Edwards' plan of life last summer was ideal. Travelling to cities and receiving the attentions of friends is no rest for Edwards. Edwards needs quiet. Baraga in the forests of Michigan was a fine place for Edwards. Edwards must consult the kindney specialist in Cincinnati, Dr. Mott. Edwards ought to wear a thick union suit.

1903 Dec. 11
(Foley), Byrd: (Chicago, Illinois)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She had a grand time at Notre Dame. It was only a reception of so many kindnesses from Edwards. Edwards entertains her so delightfully that she thinks it would be impossible to have a better time.

1903 Dec. 11
(Rhodius), George: New York, (New York)
to J(ames) F. (Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He will leave for home next week but will not be able to visit Notre Dame. He is really pressed for time. Think of it, pressed for time.

1903 Dec. 11
Seton, Archbishop Robert: Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Since he wrote last he has again seen the Pope. The Pope received the American College in the highest Loggia at the Vatican. They watched with pride the 96 American students march across to the loggia. The pope gave a short address saying that the best sort of preaching was by example. It was sweetly impressive. The Pope was gratified to hear that Seton had been the first student in 1858. Seton pontificated at High Mass at the opening of the college. He has his cord and tassel which he used at Protonotary which he will send Edwards.

1903 Dec. 12
Freri, Father J.: Baltimore, M(arylan)d
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Freri admits that a personal visit to the missionary field by an officer of the Society would lead to a more enlightened distribution of the funds. He agrees that orders in countries like their own might do more for the support of their own members in the mission fields. The establishment of many of those orders has been helped by the (Association) for the Propagation of the Faith. Many of the secular clergy fail to see why they should interest themselves in a work which is ignored by those who should be most interested in it.

1903 Dec. 12
(Huffer), Mary: Paris, (France)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

The photo and book pleased her immensely. She hopes he will come for a long visit. Her parents wish to thank Edwards for the books he sent them. There are so many things to thank Edwards for, the postal cards, the monthly magazines.

XI-2-f - A.L.S. - 7pp. - 16to. - {1}

1903 Dec. 12
Moran, John V.: Detroit, (Michigan)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mrs. Moran answered Edwards' letter in regard to Bill immediately. Imagine their surprise and annoyance when Bill appeared there that evening. He does not see why Bill was allowed to pick up and leave for such a trifling indisposition. Bill has been lazy about his studies. He wants him to stay at the university during the holidays if there is someone to look after him.

1903 Dec. 12
Osouf, Bishop P(ierre) M(arie): Tokyo, Japan
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

1903 Dec. 14
Klein, Peter: Bellevue, (France)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He sent Edwards the works which he published and will send from Paris those which he did not have at Bellevue. He will be happy to send him soon a print of his portrait. It will be ready in three weeks. He thanks Father (Daniel) Hudson for the life of Hecker. He will send Hudson a copy of his latest book for the Ave Maria.

1903 Dec. 14
Hudson C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father Hudson thanks Brownson for the valuable work on Dante. The wonder is that Dante escaped the stake. Poets, birds and children are the favorites of fortune. Father Randall quotes Dr. Brownson but the work would be greatly improved if there were a list of references. He wishes Brownson and his family a joyous Christmas.

1903 Dec. 15
Gregori, Fannie: Migliarino Pisani, (Italy)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

She is ready to forgive Edwards seeing that he has not quite forgotten her. It is too bad Edwards' has to suffer so much from the grip. She takes after her father in having perfect health. But her brother Pio is a constant sufferer as Bologna is quite a cold place. Constantino is contemplating going to America as he failed in business. It would be best if he could get a position in some school to teach drawing or Italian. He paints but cannot be called an artist. Mrs. Milbury left her $500 when she died. She will keep it for an emergency. She asks if the painting of Columbus ever got to Notre Dame. Father (John A.) Zahm (C.S.C.) said he might help to find a purchaser for it.

Kelen, Peter: Paris, (France)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

(1903?) Dec. 17
McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J.: (Rochester, New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson loses no opportunity to say a good word in favor of St. Bernard's altar wines. Hudson's praise has increased its sale to the advantage of St. Bernard's Seminary. Some one had to speak out to check the growing evil of the rush of ambitious young ladies to enter women's colleges. He is not so sure of dropping off at Notre Dame on his way to or from Chicago whenever that pallium is imposed. He is more likely to appear in July returning from St. Paul after the Convention of the L(adies) C(atholic) B(enevolent) A(ssociation) of which he is Supreme Spiritual Adviser. Tomorrow he confers deaconships on three and priesthood on five the morning after. Two more will receive priesthood during Lenten Ember days and thirty at Trinity. One is for Fort Wayne and is brilliant. Their first Doctor will receive his cap in June, 1905. He will go to Rome for two years after six years of theology at St. Bernard's.

(Myers), Geo(rge): Dubuque, Iowa
to (James F. Edwards): Notre Dame, Indiana)

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Cambridge, Mass(achusetts)

(19)03 Dec. 18
Cothonay, O.P., Father B.: Haiphong, Indo-China
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Cothonay sends the address of Bishop M(assimo) Fernandez at Bui Chu, Tonkin. He asks Hudson to exchange the Ave Maria for his Bulletin. He is fond of everything American for he was a missionary there for 5 or 6 years.

1903 Dec. 18
Randall, Father W(illia)m E.: Columbia, M(issouri)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Randall thanks Brownson for the interest he has taken in his poor book and would feel unduly complimented did he not regard it as an encouragement of a well-meant effort in hope of something better in the future. Next to his daring in writing it, he marvels at Brownson's patience in listening to its reading. He feels that he left Detroit with the conviction that he has been most unkind and inconsiderate toward a great and good man.

1903 Dec. 19
Armstrong, James: Charleston, S(outh) C(arolina)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The books and magazines have furnished interesting and instructive reading. They regarded it as a privilege to have Brother Kevin (Toomey?) as their guest. If Hudson ever comes to their area, they would be delighted to have him spend time in Charleston.

1903 Dec. 19
Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, Wis(consin)
 to H(enry) F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Since the receipt of Brownson's letter of December 6, Doyle has been very busy. He resigned his position as Secretary of the Manufacturer's Association and has taken up a position with the law firm of Bloodgood, Kemper and Bloodgood to look after their collection department. This will deprive him of his trips East and the pleasure of calling on Henry. The association is now moribund if not dead. He hopes Brownson enjoyed his trip to Notre Dame and that it benefited him. He asks Brownson's opinion of W. B. Cochrane's address. What does Brownson think of the letters on the Temporal Power in "The Tablet"? He has received from the administrator of the diocese a copy of Brownson's views which he loaned the late Archbishop and since his note in it was marked, he presumes that it was read. He does not have the honor of being acquainted with the archbishop elect (Sebastian Messmer) but thinks he will like him. Most of it was in his letters to "The Tablet." He wishes Henry and his family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

 (Added Dec. 20)

Since his letter is almost a series of interrogations, Doyle encloses some clippings from the Chicago Chronicle of Dec. 20. The Panama question ought to disquiet the President, but since it was successfully carried out, he supposes the public will condone its iniquity. He refers Brownson to Father Hudson's remark in the "Ave Maria" of last week.

Barton, Francis W.: Danville, Ill(inois)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They were delighted with the books Edwards sent them. They think they have a nice little library for a start. He and wife have been buying books for the past two years and in ten years they expect to have the best library in Danville. They are not as yet settled in their new home. He went into partnership; with one of the leading old physicians and is up to his eyes in work bearing the weight of both his and the other doctor's practice as well as the railroad work. He rarely hears from Notre Dame since Preston died.

(19)03 Dec. 27
Dean, Herbert S.: (London, England)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dean sends his paper on the latest movement. He would rather be anonymous, but Hudson is to put initials at the end in case he wants them. All his work for Anglicanism was done as the anonymous sub-editor and editor. It is astounding to English ears to learn that the Ave Maria has a 25,000 circulation. Archbishop (Francis) Bourne is a hard worker and keen as can be. The new cathedral just opened will be a great help.

Fitte, C.S.C., Father S(tanislaus) F.: Buffali, (New York)
 to (James F.) Edwards:

He has unexpectedly to run to Buffalo on business but leaves for Canton tomorrow. He supposes Edwards keeps busy at the work he has been so zealously doing for Notre Dame and the future historian of the Catholic Church. Edwards' reward will be the greater for not being spoiled by compliments. He asks that Edwards gives his regards to good, unselfish Major (Henry) Brownson. They had a grand banquet in the college on St. John's Day and the Provincial (Father John A. Zahm, C.S.C.) poured out an effusion of kind feelings so as to astonish everybody, except those who know him.

(190)3 Dec. 28
Taunton, Father Ethelred L.: (London, England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The last half year has been a heavy one with Taunton in ecclesiastical affairs — deeply interesting but not profitable as far as money is concerned. Their bishops act in a most lawless manner. Taunton has got several to see the errors of their ways and to see that their own liberty is bound up with the law. A great constitutional struggle is going on. The chapters recommend the names for vacant sees. But their lordships have taken into their heads that they have a right to add names. The Archbishop is trying to override them the same way they have overridden the chapters. So there is a battle royal going on. Then there are vast questions as to diocesan feuds. There is no hope except in an Apostolic Delegate. The more one sees of (Cardinal Francis) Bourne's policy the more terrible is the loss of Father (Francis Aiden) Gasquet.

Sister's rosary was blessed by Reverend (John?) Sargent, Superior of the Anglican Holy Cross Fathers and she used it several years before becoming a Catholic. Those who know Father ( ) Larrabee regard him as a saint. For three years he was Sister's director. Soon after her graduation at Kemper Hall she went to the Sisters of the Holy Nativity in Providence, an order founded by Bishop Grafton. Some day her superiors intend to let her write the story of her conversion. Now sister is at the sanitarium recovering from a serious illness.

(MacDonnell), Sister Mary Magdelene: Lisbon, Portugal
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

In 1901 Father Russell, O.P., died at 93. This past year they lost Cardinal Aloisi Masella. Religion has gloomy prospects now in Europe. Father Ethelred (L.) Taunton paid them a visit during a delay of his packet boat in Lisbon. He is quite sane unless you touch him on the Jesuits. Sister thanks Hudson for sending the Ave Maria to her sister in Ireland.
