Madigan, Edmund:
Demariscotta Mills, Maine
to H(enry) F. Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Some time ago, Madigan got the picture of Brownson's father. When he goes to Boston, he will try to get a larger picture if Possible. He never saw the great and famous Orestes A. Brownson but knew of him as a boy and read him all his life. He cannot realize that he died in 1876. The Boston Herald praised him and said "There has been only one Brownson and there will never be another". He presumes Henry Brownson must be about 70. Is he the eldest? Madigan is now 68 and not very well. He fears he will never see Brownson though he would if he were in Detroit. He asks Brownson for his picture. His brother James once called on Orestes A. Brownson near Boston. P.S. He has heard that three of Brownson's brothers were shot during the war and that his sister died some years ago. He asks where his father was buried.

O'Kennedy invites Hudson to spend a few months in Fedamore. Margaret Mary O'Brien will tell Hudson that this is a sweet, simple country place. Yesterday he sent "The Times". There is a long letter from Dr. Hutchinson in which he holds that leprosy is non-infectious. The letter of Catholicus in re Abbe Loisy must be written by someone in the know. O'Kennedy sends a letter to Lady Monteagle; she is the daughter of Dr. Butcher, bishop of Meath. O'Kennedy is within sight of the end. The six chapters must be with Hudson now; the seventh is being copied.

to Henry F. Brownson:

In reply to Brownson's card stating that he had not received any reports on the "Brownson Views": there were no copies on sale during 1903. There were 988 printed and it took from 1893 to the end of 1902 to sell these copies. Since there was no longer any demand for the book, they did not reprint it. Brownson has received reports of all the copies sold to the end of 1902.

Randall, Father W(illia)m E.:
Columbia, M(issouri)
to (Henry F.) Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Father Randall received the seven volumes by express. Should Brownson find any more of the same kind, no matter what century they treat, he would be pleased to have them. There are advantages, other than monetary, in getting books from Brownson's library. He is sure to get the right book, the right edition, etc. He would like to have a list of written biographies Brownson has read and esteems, and a list of persons deserving a place in the work "Celebres". The number must not exceed 150, but should not be less than 100. He encloses a postal money order for six dollars and renders thanks.

He has just arrived in this country to carry on the work of the Irish Industrial League of America, recently founded on the occasion of the visit of Father (Thomas A.?) Finlay and Father O'Donovan to this country. He is sure Hudson has heard of the new Irish revival, and that a new spirit is being infused into the people of the old country. Hannon had a letter of introduction from Charlotte O'Conor Eccles also.

Doyle, W(illia)m T.:
Milwaukee, Wis(consin)
to (Henry F. Brownson):
(Detroit, Michigan)
Doyle delayed answering Brownson's letter of Jan. 31 as he wished to look up Hudson's book, but he has been too busy. He severed his connection with Bloodgood, Kemper, and Bloodgood on Feb. 1 and has been in Albert Lea, Minnesota, for about a week buying up a bankrupt stock of clothing for a Milwaukee firm. He has not yet settled down. He has not received a single "Tablet" for this year, nor the last two of last December. He will have quite a bunch to send if Brownson still cares to read them. The October number of the "American Catholic Quarterly" had an article by Father McNabb on "The Twelfth Promise".

Foote, Mark M.:
Chicago, (Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Foote has returned from Burlington after the death of his father. He seemed more and more drawn to their religion, but up to his last illness he had not gotten around to taking the step. Foote thinks his father had an aversion to anything ceremonious. When the night before he died Father (Bernard) Mackin asked him if he had changed his mind as to being baptized, he said his mother had him baptized and he saw no necessity of going through the ceremony again. The next day the sister who was with him baptized him.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph):
Savannah, G(eorgi)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He is pleased that Hudson spoke so strongly in favor of Father (James A.) Hickey. The question of his successor has been a matter of much concern for him for the past few years. His concern from the first month of his episcopate has been schools and teachers for the children of the masses, and churches and priests for his people. He wants a successor endowed with good common sense and not a crank. Hickey is almost universally acceptable. He will be back in Rochester, (New York) before St. Patrick's Day.
