Father (August) Goupille is booked for Cincinnati as chaplain of nuns; he is wild and furious and intends to appeal to the Superior General. Father (Patrick) Carroll is made president of Watertown college. The Provincial will be in attendance when Cardinal (Francis) Satolli comes to Chicago.

Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.:
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (James F.) Edwards:
He is glad to know that Edwards feels benefited by the baths. It will be interesting to see the pamphlets of which Edwards speaks. It was cool all through retreat. Several changes were made. Father (James) Ready is replaced by Father (Andrew) Salmon. The dome is being renovated. Father ( PeterPaul) Cooney seems to be very feeble. Father (Moses) McGarry from Montreal is expected.

Seton, Archbishop Robert:
Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards:
Notre Dame, (Indiana)
His years of work at St. Joseph's are beginning to tell on him. He is suffering from persistent prickly heat. At the request of the Carmelites he remained in Rome to pontificate at their feast on the 16th. It pleases him that Msgr. (Denis) O'Connell recognizes him as a staunch upholder of American institutions. He regrets that there are not more clergy like himself. He saved very little in his days in Jersey City. The Setons do not know how to keep money when they get it.

to James F. Edwards:
He is doing parish work in the absence of Father Arnould who went to Rome City to try to get back his health. Fitte is well but awfully hot. It seems that his boiling spell spread all over the country. He heard that Dr. Farley is going to be either auxilary or coadjutor of Bishop Horstman and Father Pfeil first bishop of Toledo.

Monarch E. Ann:
Oil City, (Pennsylvania)

It was so thoughtful of Edwards to remember Benita's anniversary. It is a comfort to know that her friends have not forgotten her. Mr. Monarch has not been well for two years. Lamar's father-in-law died June 25th; he will be missed.

Stoddard remembers Gregori's fourth station very well. He is feeling well. He is writing again two South Sea Idyls. Shall he go out to California this fall? Stoddard has written to Robertson, his San Francisco publisher, that if they will advance him royalties of $100 a month he will go to the coast and write the "Idyls of the Missions." Willie Woodworth begs him to stay there with him. He was with the Lodges at East Point for a week. Senator (Henry Cabot) Lodge had his Tuckernuck papers bound and presented them to Dr. Bigelow.

Spalding, James Field:
Milton, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Two books named in the Ave Maria may have blunted the edge of their grief a little. Since he read Hudson's article on "Catholic Young Men and State Universities," Spalding has wanted to say how much he thought of it. He praises Hudson for saying that those who live up to their religion in such institutions as Harvard will not only not be in danger of losing it but will lead others into the Church. He expects to be with Hudson for lectures early in February. They expect to move to Cambridge.
