Ball, Father J.:
Ars-sur-Formans, (France)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Ball thanks Hudson again for sending money for the cause of the Curé of Ars, (St. Jean-Baptiste Vianney). He has just received a check for 40 francs. The Curé's body is no longer in the tomb where it rested for 46 years. No relics have been taken from the body. Ball will not fail to ask for the relic he has promised Hudson. Ball also sends 50 portraits with relics, from the cassock.

Welch, S.J., Father E(dward) H.:
Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He does not feel as confident as Father Tim(othy Danahy) about the lawsuit. Father Tim is still raising money for his schoolhouse. (Thomas?) Waggaman, who has $37,500 of their money, $112 of the sisters here, $800,000 of the Catholic University, is unable to meet his engagements. If Waggaman is not forced to sell his land he will be able to meet them. Mrs. ( ) Ryan confines herself to building churches in the South, particularly Virginia. Would Hudson please say nothing about her assistance. She has not been as munificent as supposed. Father Tim is much interested in the coadjutor question. The husband of a convert Mrs. Nathan Matthews recently died, as did Dr. Thomas Herran, charge d' affaires of Columbia, a former pupil and good friend. Welch was glad to hear that Hudson's prospects at Notre Dame were so good. He gave the "Scholastic" to Father Carroll.

to (James F. Edwards:

He sends Edwards two photos taken a few days ago. He hopes Edwards has seen his brother and sister and has some things for Memorial Hall. If Edwards had only gotten that miniature of their grand-father William Seton for the Hall! To his great regret it went to the Sisters of St. Joseph's at Emmittsburg (Md.). He was 65 years old on the 28th of August and is getting stouter with age.

Some few years ago when all kinds of charges were made against the Philippine friars, Protestants held up their hands in holy horror. He called his attention to the numerous misdoings of the Protestant ministers in this country.

Christitch read Hudson's letter in which he weighed all circumstances connected with her children's salvation. He will have got her letter with two of Annie (Christitch)'s enclosed and telling him that Janie (Christitch) had received the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist. Her husband has given up sending Janie to Russia. Had she listened to the priest there all her children would be "orthodox" today. She can only deplore that she did not act with her son before he was taken from her.

Wabraushek, J:W.:
Seattle, Wash(ington)
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
He is long a way from his old home in Manistee. Since he left there four years ago he has travelled around quite a little. He put some time down in Mexico where he had some copper mining property. Since coming to Seattle three years ago he has a nice position with a wholesale liquor house where he has full charge of all office work. He has a lot of real estate improved with seven residences which he rents out. Things got very dull in Manistee. He has a nice family of four girls and three boys. The oldest Clara will go into high school this fall. Perhaps if some of his children go to St. Mary's or Notre Dame he will get to visit the old place again.

Dutton, (Ira B.) Joseph:
Kalawao, (Molokai, Hawaiian Islands)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Dutton sees that C(harles) W(arren) Stoddard is to publish a book entitled "The Island of Tranquil Delights," with "Sketches of Tahiti and Hawaii." He must have recovered. Hudson was corresponding with Stoddard in December about a new edition of "The Lepers of Molokai." Dutton hopes to make notes of the three years with Father (Joseph) Damien (de Veuster, SS.CC.). First he has to do part of the notes for Dr. (Prince Albert) Morrow. Morrow sends him each of his new books. The last one was "Social Diseases and Marriage." Dr. F( ) R( ) Day of Honolulu, a long time member of the board of health, is doing scientific work at Kalaupapa, where the guest house now is. Day, like Morrow, is true. He is an expert in making wax casts. Dutton had not been away from this yard for twelve years. Dr. (W.J.) Goodhue is the resident physician at present. Day's casts are to be used in American medical colleges. Speaking of doctor friends of Damien he should not omit Dr. Nicholas Senn of Chicago, America's leading surgeon. He has written an article on Damien and Dutton in "The Journal of the American Medical Association" of August 27, 1904. Dutton received a copy from Dr. H( ) C( ) Sloggett, a former President of the board of health. Dutton had a letter in the Janesville Gazette, Daily, of July 2. One in the Weekly of the same date was from C( ) W()Baker of Chattanooga, of their old regiment, and embodied part of an Article in the Memphis Com'l Appeal of June 5.

He can 't hear too often from Edwards. This is a beautiful little place. He asid Mass this morning at the shrine of St. Maurice. This afternoon he walked up the mountain marked by the Stations of the Cross. October will probably be spent in Sicily and southern Italy. He wishes he had kept a more copious diary while in the diocese of Newark. It would be interesting to the student of ecclesiastical history of the United States. He makes many friends in his walks.

Baxter, Dudley:

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Baxter trusts that his paper on St. Edmund's College, Old Hall, etc. is soon to appear in the Ave. He sends Hudson another manuscript about their other St. Edmund. Its contents would especially interest the Ave's British readers about the probable authenticity of these relics from Toulouse. Baxter has permission from Archbishop Bourne to publish Bourne's opinion that this matter is by no means settled. There seems to be a wide feeling that Cardinal (Herbert Vaughan) acted hastily and injudiciously in practically rejecting the relics.

Bisset, H(enry) O(verstreet):
Agana, Guam
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
Bisset, a U.S. Marine Captain, received Hudson's letter of January. He supposes he was offered last month the position of military instructor in the Jesuit College in New Orleans, but has not been ordered. Hudson's agreeing to try to get him a position is a great hope to him, for it is important for him to leave the service. The Governor is going to make him Judge of the Supreme Court of Guam about October 1. He has written by this mail to Father Pardow and Bishop Conaty as to the course to be pursued in the nascent parochial school. Father Juan Palomo, acting Bishop and saintly priest, and his Spanish Capuchin assistant know little of teaching English. Father Palomo will translate the primary books into Chamorro and English when he gets samples.

Stoddard agrees with Hudson as to the silly and childish methods of the C(atholic U(niversity) of A(merica). It has been a Sulpician seminary from the first, and can never hope to be anything else. They have lost their one good man in Judge (John Adams) Robinson. Notre Dame, (Indiana)
He is glad the Waggaman failure has not yet resulted in any scandal or loss to the University. He names the places he has been; he has not learned much this vacation. He has always felt a love for Pope Gregory X who consecrated a church he visited; he gives some of the Pope's work. He feels he is leading a useless life. If he had the chance of a diocese or a coadjutorship he would seize it at once. When he saw Bishop (Ignatius) Horstman he noticed that his appearance had changed very much. Msgr. (John A.) Stafford told him the old Missionary Chalice which was sent to Gen. Renere from California is still at Seton Hall.

Bellamy Storer is to visit Notre Dame on the third or fourth of October. Storer is going with some one who is to talk on the Church in the Philippines. Does Hudson ever see St. Rose's Free Home Magazine Christ's Poor? Rose HawthroneM(other) M. Alphonsa Lathrop, O.S.D.-sent Stoddard copies in which she or the editor quotes from the "Lepers of Molokai." Stoddard wonders who the editor is. In the June 1904 number, lines are quoted from Stoddard's verses entitled "Lahaina." The April number contains a poem called "Molokai." The joke of it is that the poem is attributed to Stoddard. What does this mean? He does not like to hurt her feelings or he would try to find its origin. Does Hudson remember a book of "Poems by Charles Warren Stoddard" reviewed in a Chicago paper? Stoddard did not write one of the lines quoted.
