Hertweck, J( ) G( ):
Los Banos, Phil(ippine) Is(lands)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
Mighty forces are at work for the preservation of their Catholic Filipino neighbor, and the powerful pilgrimage of the great Americ(an) Archbishop (Jeremiah J. Harty) is evident. The Filipino priest is surprised at the change in his people. The reception of the statue of the Virgin of Autifola was a great testimony to the Faith. On Dec(ember) 3, 5000 people approached the Sacraments in the Cathedral alone. The Jesuit Fathers Thompkins and McGeary gave a mission to English speaking Catholics. They were assisted by Harty who has taken these people by storm. The need for maintaining of the Friars here becomes more evident everyday. Since the advent of Gov(ernor) (Luke E.) Wright more quiet and peace is observable. Filipinos observe Mrs. Wright attending Mass daily and this, he suspects, has very much to do with the peacefulness now around Manila.

(Notre Dame, Indiana)
She has delayed in sending the first book of her story. The second part which was published by Ainslee and Lippincott she has thrown aside. She is afraid Hudson won't think this much of an American story and he can by all means return it. She would like two or three hundred dollars. She thanks him for replying to her inquiry about a review of (John Dalberg) Acton letters even though he could not give her much satisfaction. She is surprised that no notice has been taken by Catholic reviewers of such statements as are made in the book. For it is not with Acton's position, his disloyalty, bad faith and it spoken sympathy with heresy that one is concerned. That concerns only himself, and proves how necessary was the action with regard to St. George Mivart for which Cardinal (Herbert) Vaughan was abused by many so-called Catholics. The Protestants with whom she has come in contact are delighted with the book.

(Notre Dame, Indiana)
She gives Edwards many thanks for the beads; they are what she wanted and needed most. Mrs. Lennin thanks him for the spoon. She is glad to tell Edwards she is in the fold again, having attended to her duties last week after many years.

Harson, M.J.:
New York, (New York)
to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He wishes Edwards a happy New Year. He has not received the catalogue as yet. He attended St. Patrick's Cathedral all decorated with lights. An all male voiced choir sang. It is his opinion that the Holy Father did a great wrong in his decree about Church music.

How can he ever repay Edwards for so many beautiful presents. Every turn he makes in his room he sees something Edwards has given him. Edwards should go to the World's Fair if he can do so. He asks Edwards to send him the yearly accounts for Charl(es Rush) since he has been at N.D.

Seton, Archbishop Robert:
Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards:
Notre Dame, (Indiana)
He received a card from Don Carlos. He thought perhaps his friend at Notre Dame might stick his picture away somewhere. He tells of cases where a great family of long standing were reduced to menial jobs. He assisted at the Pope's ceremonies on the 8th of December and on the Sunday following at the canonization of St. Alexander Sauli and St. Gerard Magella. He describes his place and part in the ceremony. (Note: Enclosed is an autographed, noted news paper clipping from the New York Times.)

to (James F. Edwards:

Mr. John D. Crimmins of New York offered to speak to the editor or manager of the New York Times about a correspondenceship on that paper. This is his first letter. Few people know who the author is; he recommended secrecy. (Note: article is titled, "Rome and the Romans" signed "Fyvie".)

Edwards' letter which he received this morning makes him feel the fault in his laxity of correspondence. His time has been taken up with a charming young fellow William Scully of Brooklyn. They are in San Francisco looking for employment.

to James F. Edwards:
He hopes Edwards will return safe and sound to cheer his friends by his presence. This is also the wish of Father August Goupille. Christmas he went to Benton Harbor. St. John's day was celebrated with pomp, bombast, and lies. All wind and foam, nothing but words.

Hill, C.P., Father Edmund:
Chicago, (Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hill was not surprised at the anger of the "Living Church" over that "Open Confession". He does not think the author of the article could speak truly. Hudson's reply was admirable and to the point. When Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.) was with him as a Paulist he was angered one day by a visit from an Anglican clergyman who wanted to enter the Church, but was held back by wife and family. P.S. He sends two leaflets printed at Kingston, Canada. The Sisters have a press.
