McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph):
Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
McQuaid thanks Hudson for his good wishes and prayers. The "terna" did not reach Rome much before Christmas. His business will have to wait, but he sees no hitch except through Card(inal) (Francesco) Satolli. Against him are Card(inal Sebastian) Martinelli and Monsignor (Diomede) Falconio. Satolli can say nothing against Father(James A.) Hickey. McQuaid has not written to the Holy Father because the time is not right. He will learn the fact as soon as any opposition shows itself. He asked for a Coadjutor to remove the temptation from so many would-be successors. Hudson can speak of the contents of the letter to Father Morrissey, but to no one else.

He looked over his Reviews and list what he found. He will send the ones listed by Express in a day or so. He is still poor and has old debts unpaid so he cannot dispose by gift the articles which would be of interest in Edwards' collection.

Stiles, L.R.:
Seabreeze, Fl(orid)a
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He is surprized at the content of Edwards' letter pertaining to his sister's (Mrs. Seymour) portrait. He is familiar with the history of the painting and gives it in entirety. He encloses a copy of the receipt that Edwards gave them for the picture. If Mrs. Little consents to leave the portrait at Notre Dame as part of the Gregori collection, he will not stand in the way; if she would not consent to Edwards request, he must insist on the return of the portrait.

Geare, Reverend J. Holwell:
Holland, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He has not heard from Archbishop (John M. Farley) of New York although he sent a second letter to Father (James V.) Lewis. He will renounce the ministry of the P(rotestant) E(piscopal) Church when the Bishop visits his parish for confirmation. He asks Hudson if he can come to him as a Catholic layman because Hudson is the only Catholic priest who has taken a kindly interest in him. He is willing to do anything.
