Life is too short to bother about such matters. He had a copy of Matthew Carey's first Catholic Bible printed in the U. S. and asks if he gave it to Edwards.

1905 Feb. 13
Seton, Mgr. Robert: (Rome, Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

He doesn't like to hear about himself; there is not a word of truth in what some people say about the Cardinalate. He does not wish to be a Cardinal in Curia. He would not like to lead the life of a Cardinal in Rome. He encloses a letter received from a lady friend this morning; he is disgusted with Roman society. The relation of the clergy there to the people is so different from what it is with Americans that he is discontented.

(1905) (Feb. 13)
Lippi, Marie: (Rome, Italy)
to Msgr. (Robert Seton): (Rome, Italy)

She received his letter yesterday and is grieved that his health is not good. If one wants to lose one's faith they have only to come to the Eternal City. She doesn't think that Seton by seeing her would be losing his precious time or duties. She needs a spiritual adviser.

Oates, Austin: Liverpool, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Would Hudson care for a monthly news letter describing Catholic affairs in England? For two years he wrote for the Rosary Magazine. Father Reinhart, the editor, was pleased with his work. He was private secretary to Cardinal (Herbert) Vaughan for several years. He has been associated with many Catholic Societies. If Hudson wants a reference he can write to Monsignor (James) Moyes canon of the Cathedral of Westminster.

Mannix, M(ary) E.: San Diego, Calif(ornia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She is sending Hudson a portion of a letter from Ernesto (no enclosure). Last year a Filipino student, Domingo San Jose, was being taunted by his landlady (Mrs Jenks) and her family over his religion. San Jose came to (Mannix) and asked if he could stay there. Mannix sent San Jose back to Mrs. Jenks because there were only a few weeks left to live there and because a change of residence would require (William Alexander) Sutherland's approval; Mrs Jenks covered the boy with kindness so that no further complaints would be made about her. Mannix said she had offered to take in four Filipinos, but Sutherland gave them to a woman down the block.

He encloses a clipping which he thinks Hudson has already seen. Filipinos have no Negro blood but Malay which is not Negro. He has more Spanish blood than anything else. Evanisto Battle can tell Hudson about him. He has never suffered such humiliation; they consider him a Negro. He and Battle belong to the same society in Manila. He hopes Hudson will stand up for their rights. (Three clippings enclosed express views of) President (Jacob Gould) Schurman of Cornell, Dr. (Charles) Hodge of Princeton and Monsignor (Ambrose) Agius, O.S.B. on religion in education.

Taunton is sorry the manuscript about the "Festa" came too late. He has made progress with his new book "The Law of the Church." He has hopes of finishing by March 31; then for a month's stay in Rome before he sets his face homeward. The only news that has reached him has been the story of an English Archbishop who excommunicated a lady and then had to inform her that by Cardinal (Jerome Mary) Gotti's orders she had never incurred censure.

1905 Feb. 28
Medlycott, Bishop A(dolph) E.: Nice, France
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He wrote to a Benedictine in London to inquire if Hudson were still the editor of the Ave Maria. He wanted to inquire after the kind friends he made after his visit to the University of Notre Dame. On his arrival from the United States the Cardinal Prefect of the Propaganda told him in the fall of 1896 that the Holy See had decided to give native bishops to the Syro-Malabarese Christians and that other arrangements would be made for him, promising him a nomination to a diocese. It never went beyond that. For the last three or four years he has occupied his time writing a book on the Apostolate of St. Thomas the Apostle, but may have to make corrections because of the publication of an old Coptic Papyrus by Prof(essor) Carl Schmidt.
