Hughes, Father H(enry) G.:
Shefford, England
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He is sending an article to Hudson as suggested. He has not said anything "ex professo" on the new theories about inspiration. He hopes Hudson will find it of use. He thanks him for his very kind notice in the Ave Maria for February 18. He is full of ideas on the subject of modern theories concerning Scripture and the evolution of doctrine. (John Cardinal) Newman's "Essay" is only an 'essay'; it does not work out the theory of doctrinal development completely.

Seton, Elizabeth:
Huntington, New York
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
She thanks Edwards for the copy of the Ave Maria; the notice of her brother is a very kind one. He gave his sword to one of his nephews also one of her father's. She will send the box of family papers. She asks Edwards to name and date the portrait of William Seton. It was taken at Mt. St. Mary's where Mother Seton labored and died. Robert (Seton's) sad letter arrived; the brothers were much attached to each other.

Lack of opportunity has occasioned his neglect in correspondence. He got back to Harvard four weeks ago. His father did the best that could be done. He asks if Edwards showed the papers to Fathers Fitte and Morrissey. After the election of Sam Piles he and his father went east. He hears occasionally from Byrd (M. Foley).

O'Reily, Archbishop John:
Glen Osmond, Australia
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
Notre Dame, Indiana
He is under a large debt of gratitude to Hudson for the copies of the Ave Maria which he has for so long been sending. He sends some of his own efforts in type which tell a story of marvellous Catholic generosity. There are only 40,460 Catholics in the Archdiocese of Adelaide. He is sending a copy of the Australian Directory and a draft for 3 pounds to help the great work of the "Ave Maria".

William (Seton) passed to his reward peacefully this forenoon fortified with all the Sacraments. Father White, S.J. was with him till the end. Edwards' letter reached William a couple of days ago and he asked her to answer it thanking Edwards for his prayers. The Seton heirlooms as well as a crayon sketch of her father (son of Mother Seton) he told her to express to Edwards as a gift to Memorial Hall. The Mary Stuart painting is of great value.

Seton, Msgr. Robert:
Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards:
Notre Dame, (Indiana)
He is going to return to America in July for a short visit; he will go out to Notre Dame. William (Seton) would have been glad to know that he was to be honored with the Laetare Medal. He has discovered a dealer that can secure all or most of the photos of the Sacred College. Edwards is to write if he wants them. Other people have the Pope's ear. Cardinal Rampolla is humiliated, and he has no voice in naming of the canons to the vacant stalls. He would be delighted to have a prelate of Seton's name and rank to succeed Monsignor the Prince de Croy, but he has no influence. John D. Crimmins wrote that he liked Seton's letters in the times and asked who "Tyvie" was.

Edes, Ella B.:
Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Edes commenced her 72nd year last Dec.7. Pius X is much more affable and far less arrogant than Leo XIII who kept even archbishops and bishops on their knees before him. Pius X has gone from parish to parish like a father amid his children. Financial affairs are in a sad state. Pius X is literally almost penniless. No one can divine what Leo XIII did with all the millions which poured into his hands. The series she used to send Hudson from the Vatican press no longer is issued, nor do they know when it will be resumed. The compiler's name was, if she remembers rightly. De Martinis.

Does Hudson think an American edition of the "Eve of the Reformation" is possible or desired? He hopes all his friends at Notre Dame, including Father (John A.) Zahm are well.
