Conroy, S.J., Father Joseph P.: St. Louis, (Missouri)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Conroy expresses his appreciation for Hudson's note in the Ave Maria of Feb(ruary) 17 on the subject of criticism of Catholic schools and colleges. After six months' experience at the best among Protestant colleges—Johns Hopkins—Conroy would say that "the reiterated claim of superiority" is a very mild presentation of the case. Work which would not be tolerated in the undergraduate department of St. Louis University is received daily without comment in the literary post graduate department at Johns Hopkins.

Dutton, (Ira B.) Joseph: Kalawao, Molokai

In reviewing the "Statement as to Father Damien" made by Dutton on Feb. 12, 1890, it has been his purpose to add considerably thereto, and this is what he is intending to do now. Dutton will not be able to carry out his other purpose at the present time of giving certain friends some reminiscences of his 3 years with Father Damien (de Veuster, SS. CC.). The "Statement" is addressed to Bishop Herman (Koeckemann SS.CC.). Dutton sent a copy of it to (R.W.) Meyer asking his opinion. Meyer agreed in the estimate of Damien. Dutton sent Meyer's letter to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.). Hudson is the one who brought Damien before the English speaking people, by publishing the writings of Cha(rle)s; W(arren) Stoddard and others. Dutton explains the use of "Brother Joseph" (and gives many details of his life). Dutton is a layman. Dutton and Father James (Beissel, SS.CC.) were the executors of Damien's will. In 1893 Dutton put Damien's "effects" in order and forwarded them to the Damien Institute, near Louvain, Belgium.

Smith thanks Vattmann for his effort to place the Philippine Government in the proper light before the Catholics of America. Smith will be glad to assist in any way the project of sending young Filipinos to the United States, to be trained and educated for the priesthood. The creation of a native priesthood will restore confidence, and destroy the schism.

Kittell, Father Ferdinand: Loretto, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Kittell sometimes thinks how different his life would have been, if he had developed the qualities necessary for an ecclesiastical diplomat, but he has spoiled every chance by being open and candid. He deplores the tendency towards empty distinctions and meaningless titles that are now developing in the American Church. He encloses a duplicate that explains itself. He has mailed copies of it to the various Monsignori, therein mentioned, to Bishop (John Francis Regis) Canevin and others. He hopes Hudson will pardon him for having quoted from his letter.

 Enclosure:

1906 Feb. 21
Kittell, Father Ferdinand: Loretto, P(ennsylvani)a
 to Father M(artin) Ryan, P.R.: Pittsburg(h), P(ennsylvani)a

Kittell's absence from the investiture next Sunday impels him to explain. Kittell believes that the Holy Father by elevating all the Vicars general to the lowest title of the Monsignorato has worked more harm than he could foresee. The bishops by having them raised to domestic prelates have worked still greater harm. Kittell had hoped that Canevin would leave his officials with the empty title the Pope threw to them. The literal translation of monsignor is My Lord: My Lord F.L. Tobin, Jos(eph) Suehr, W(illia)m Kittell, John Boyle. Oh Bosh! Kittell freely admits that the three to be invested are well worthy of any honor. Some time ago a true priest of God, known all over the world for his contributions to Catholic literature wrote to Kittell that he once expressed precisely the same opinion regarding empty titles as Kittell did.
