to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The General is making a thorough visitation — seeing everyone and insisting that everyone tell him what they think of the Province. Their action gives them one practical lesson — to speak their minds to the General. If he does not hear all it is useless to expect any change. Every effort will be made to down his (Morrissey's) influence. The General must see that he (Morrissey) is backed by many members. All that can be done is to send them all off to some one house and he thinks there will be enough to make a lively house and a happy one. He is ready for any emergency. He has to go carefully all must remember, for the General made the man (John A. Zahm) and gave him absolute power and there may be a reaction under pressure. The personnel of the Chapter will be ridiculed — so is Rome, but Rome rules. The General (Gilbert Francais, C.S.C.) will be in the states soon; Canada is a hard climate.

Lenihan, Bishop George M.:
Auckland, (New Zealand)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Father Kelly of Chicago wrote saying he would pay for any trip, but Lenihan can't find the time for such holiday making. He is in the midst of improvements to his Cathedral. He is sending a postcard showing building and presbytery. He also is sending his Lenten Pastoral. Hudson is to send him ( ) Crowley's work No. 2. He has been asked by bishops in Australia to lend the copy of No. 1 and they wanted to refute it but Lenihan destroyed the dirty work of a beastly filthy fellow.

Halle, Marie:
London, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Halle wonders if Hudson has seen her book "The Life of Queen Mary of Modena" by Martin Haile. Dutton of New York has taken 500 copies. Halle is at work on Mary of Modena's son, James III. As nearly all the papers are at the Public Record Office and British Museum, the English press have received it favorably. Halle has let her flat in Paris. She has heard nothing of their mutual friend (Kathleen) O'Meara since before Christmas. Father (Ethelred) Taunton is just about leaving Rome for England. She fears his health is failing fast. She saw Madame Courson before leaving Paris.

Frenguelli, Pasquali:
Rome, Italy
to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He announces that the bronze bust is finished that on the following day he will show it to Card. Satolli and to another distinguished friend, and then ship it to Notre Dame, on March 31. He asks Edwards to be sure to send him the money. He is sure that Edwards will be pleased by the bust, since he copied the photograph sent to him as faithfully as possible. It could not have been done better, and at Rome everyone is pleased with the work. He remarks that his profit has been very little, considering the pains he took and the expenses. He hopes that Edwards will realize this and send him a little more than the price agreed on. He speaks of another bust that he is to do for Edwards and asks him to send two photographs, one a front view, and one a side view.
