Taunton, Father Ethelred (L.):
Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Taunton has been unwell—heart and overwork. Rome has not agreed with him, and he does not know whether he will stay. Archbishop (John) Ireland, whose acquaintance he made, asked him to give the retreat as St. Paul's but because of ill health he had to decline. He hopes his "Law of the Church" has been sent to Hudson by Herder. The Holy Father (Pius X) seems to be a disappointed and weary man. Taunton will be surprised if his Pontificate is a long one. Pius X does not seem to have any creative force, and he seems afraid of his cardinals. The present outlook is not encouraging.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Dutton gave Hudson's greetings to Mother Marianne and the sisters. The fine diary was sent to him by Mrs. Semmes. Dutton saw Hudson's notice of the Board of Health report, and is glad Hudson found the Hollister book interesting. Hollister was a schoolmate. (Charles Warren) Stoddard was at San Jose—may have caused the earth-quake. The Honolulu Board of Health is getting copies from him of things he has written about Father Damien (de Veuster, SS.CC.) P.S. Dutton hopes the United States will settle up with Colombia. He wishes the Canal were made free to the world.

Nesbitt will follow Hudson's advice and let him read the result. B(urns) O(ates) thought highly of her manuscript, but wanted her to pay half the expenses of publishing and advertising, with no further profits. Washbourne agreed to bear the expenses of publication and give her 25 copies of the book. The copyright is to be theirs. She was talking to her cousin, Canon R.J. Knowling, Professor of Scripture at the University of Durham about the Ave Maria. She wrote a great deal for the Catholic Fireside when Monsignor Nugent was alive
