Miale, Nicholas:
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
Notre Dame, (Indiana)
In 1885 a booklet on the authenticity of a Holy Nail in the Dominican Church of Spoleto came into his hands. In 1900 he came across the votum to the Congregation of Rites for the granting of the office "lanceae et clavorum." Miale will now translate the booklet into English for Hudson. No writer speaks of this Holy Nail. He encloses a rough sketch of the Holy Nail and has been promised the cooperation of an artist for a design of the reliquary. Last Sunday the Gazzetta di Foligno had a political item from the Ave Maria.

O'Delany, M. Barry:
Paris, (France)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
(Pierre) Curie was buried without any religious ceremony whatever, in compliance with his express wish. O'Delany, therefore, presumes that an article on his work or hers would not do for the Ave Maria. O'Delany is sending instead a sketch on Corneille whose statue was unveiled in Paris on Sunday last. O'Delany is sending a copy of the May 19th Ave Maria to the Marquise de Wentworth.

Seton, Archbishop Robert:
Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards:
Notre Dame, (Indiana)
He asks if Edwards didn't place a letter for Archbishop Ireland in an envelope addressed to him by mistakes. Thomas Seton-Jevons objects to letting his Roman Diaries go out of the family. He pontificated at the American College on Easter Sunday. It is rather the personality of Archbishop (John) Ireland — his noble pretence and evident sincerity — which carries an audience with him. His diaries of 1902 to 1905 are the most interesting. He discusses his plans for the summer.

Oechtering, Father J(ohn) H.:
Fort Wayne, Ind(iana)
to Father D(aniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Oechtering has read Hudson's article on the deplorable condition of the Church in the Philippine Islands. Were he younger he would go at once. Oechtering wonders if something could not be done in a financial way and makes a suggestion. The Jesuits in Germany in their magazine "The Missions" have a subscription or contribution list, partly anonymous partly with names. Could not the Ave Maria do something like this for the Philippine Church? Oechtering would head the list with $25. Hudson has no idea how indifferent the pastors are to this problem.

Rochester, N(ew)Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hudson's letter came just as McQuaid was leaving for Jersey to attend the Golden Jubilee of Seton Hall (University) 1856-1906. McQuaid has read Hudson's clippings on what might be done for the Philippine Catholics. McQuaid agrees with Hudson. McQuaid will write to Archbishop (A. Ambrose) Agius to send him two promising young natives sufficiently educated to enter the class of philosophy. McQuaid will provide for them up to ordination. When the wing to St. Bernard's is finished he will make the number of free places for Philipinos five.

Miale, Nicholas:
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
Notre Dame, (Indiana)
Miale has added some notes to help interest Hudson in having the American (Catholic En)Cyclopedia mention, at least, the existence of this Holy Nail. The silence of writers about it is a wonder to him. He would have sent it before this, but wanted to get a working sketch of the reliquary (drawing enclosed). A fellow student occasionally sends the Liverpool Cath(olic) Times which once had a fling at the Amer(ican) Cath(olic) Cyclopedia. Enclosed is an account of the Holy Nail with the notes.

The Pope's blessing promised by Edwards has reached him. It was addressed to Mr. Madingly instead of Madigan. He supposed the error in the name doesn't lessen the effect of the blessing. He is grateful to Edwards.

Weihaiwei, N(orth) China
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hallam has been missioning inland and has neglected to send Hudson "L'Echo de la Mission", published by their Vicariate. He is endeavoring to establish a mission east of Wenleng near the end of the Shantung Promontory. The village is 25 miles from Weihaiwei. Hallam hopes to build a little house and a room which may serve the purposes of a chapel, school, and assembly room, but without an increase of funds little can be done. Hallam again begs Hudson for a little help.
