Monarch, M.V. Jr.: ( Owensboro), K(entuck)y
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

The postal cards take him aback to his dear old college days. He doesn't see how Edwards remembers all his friends. His Father, his best friend, has gone to his eternal rest. They remember the blessing Edwards sent of Pius X. Dorothy is quite a young lady. Rebecca Crouse and Benita should be remembered in Edwards' prayers.

Frawley, Henry: (Deadwood, South Dakota)
to James H. Lynch: Butte, Montana

He investigated thoroughly the conditions, situation, and educational facilities of Notre Dame (University). Under the auspices of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, with a delightful location, excellent work in educational and moral lines, the teachers of the institution have dedicated their lives to its work and they have accomplished wonderful results. If there could be interested in it persons who have been blessed with means and who are willing to donate a portion to such a noble cause, he knows of no more worthy Institution. He commends Notre Dame to Lynch, knowing him and his personal relation with Senator Clark of Montana and other wealthy gentlemen.

Their friend W(illiam) F.P. Stockley was staying at Fedamore for a few days when Hudson's letter arrived in August. O'Kennedy was glad to chat with Stockley, especially on the Education Question. One of these days a big load of manuscripts is going to Hudson. The two convents of Gart and Kinvarra acted as kind to him as if he had been one of the founders.

Seton, Archbishop Robert: Cordova, Spain
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

Since he wrote from Auila he has been to Madrid and Toledo and had a trip to Cordova yesterday. He received a letter from Mrs. Lelia Seton Wilder and is struck him to suggest to her to go up and visit Notre Dame and Memorial Hall. He was disappointed with Madrid; he tells of the things he saw there. The drives he has taken in Spain have been instructive and interesting. In Limaucas he was shown over the archives. He tells the towns he visited on these drives and those he is to visit. He has traveled leisurely and some day his journal will make interesting reading. He told Edwards that he could undoubtedly get some of General Foster's things from his brother Henry's (Seton) widow. He ought to be a canon of St. Peter's in deference to Cardinal Gibbons' request; but that is all.

1906 Oct. 12
Starbuck, Charles C.: Andover, Mass(achusetts)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Monsignor Peter K. Guilday, in his article on St. Francis Borgia, makes a huge blunder of pedigree. Guilday calls the saint "grandson of Ferdinand the Catholic"; this would have made him a grandson of Isabella the Catholic, but in fact he was nothing of the sort. His paternal grandmother was in some way related to Ferdinand of Aragon, but was not a princess. Borgia was in fact the great-grandson of the very notorious Roderick Borgia. Dr. (Ludwig) Pastor makes the whole genealogy of the Borgias very plain. Father (Francis Aiden) Gasquet's article on Anglican Orders was a very clear historical exposition from his point of view.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Does Hudson remember a story read and taken into consideration for the Ave Maria which was written by her aunt, C. Fisher? Hudson rejected it at the time because it was weighted down with a good deal of heavy theology. Fisher has completely re-written it and they have taken the liberty to send it to him by express.

Gasquet, O.S.B., Father F(rancis) Aidan: (London, England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Gasquet has sent his "Christian Family" paper to the Catholic World, but has not heard whether they are going to print it. He will write to Father (John J.) Burke and ask him to forward it to Hudson if they do not want to make use of it. Gasquet has just gotten "Parish Life in Medieval England" out and it looks well. He was delighted with the visit of the two Notre Dame Sisters. "Lord Acton and his Circle" has called forth a violent attack from Father (Herbert)Thurston who desires to exclude (John Dalberg) Acton from the ranks of Catholics. Gasquet has tried to answer him for the next Tablet.
