1906 Nov. 4
Seton, Archbishop Robert: Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

His nephew has made no claim on his diaries. He doesn't think that his biography would be of any particular interest to the public, as his life has been uneventful, unheroic, and humdrum. He doesn't think it considerate of Miss Agnes Sadlier not to have sent a copy of her life of his Grandmother, Mother Seton. She probably doesn't mention his work, "Memoir, Letters and Journal of Elizabeth Seton." He had come to the agreement with Mr. (Lawrence) Kehoe to edit the work and have it reprinted by the Catholic Publication Society. He had transferred the stereotyped plates to Kehoe. He has not been made a Canon. He learned from a lady who heard it from Cardinal (James) Gibbons himself that he had written to the Pope, asking to have Seton appointed and that the answer came that his request would be granted. Cardinal Rampolla said he would speak highly of Seton for the honor. It was Cardinal Bedini who spoke of him to Pius IX and got him in the Accademia. He tells of his audiences with the Pope, the Pope's promise to make him a bishop. He gives Bishop (James R.) Bayley's words about a bishopric to Seton. He heard that (Bishop Silas M.) Chatard, rector of the American College, told the Cardinal Prefect of Propaganda that Seton had no experience; having been a mere chaplain to nuns ever since he left Rome. Bishop (Michael Augustine) Corrigan said that Seton had not experience; Seton asks what experience had Corrigan.

Agius (O.S.B.), Archbishop A. Ambrose: Manila, (Philippine Islands)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Agius thanks Hudson for his activity on their behalf. Agius has not written to Monsignor (Diomede) Falconio urging an appeal for a creation of a Filipino fund; he has asked the Cardinal Secretary of State to communicate with the Delegate in Washington if he thinks fit. Agius has received answer from (Edward L.) Hearn, to his appeal to the K(nights of) C(olumbus). Hudson has been instrumental in getting places for two students in the Seminary at Rochester. Bishop McQuaid will take more later on. The American Press in the Philippines has been most vile and Archbishop (Jeremiah J.) Harty has been most cowardly attacked during his absence. General Smith is unable to help in the way of transportation. Bishop (Frederick Z.) Rooker's seminary burned down. The Government is delaying the payment of their claims for damages during the war.

Seton, Archbishop Rob(ert): Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

He cannot say he has received the four letters Edwards wrote him. He has not had his "on returning" audience with the Pope, as visiting Bishops have a prior claim. He is glad that Notre Dame is relieved of an incubus. He was not favorably impressed by the man when he had the hospitality of Seton's spare room. Municipal ownership of the docks in New York has been a heavy blow to the Seton estate. It is not true that he has been made a Canon of St. Peter's. He discusses his financial matters. He is quite ready to let Edwards have all his correspondence. If anyone writes his life, he hopes it is well done. Formerly it was a habit to return to Rome by All Saints' Day, but people are beginning to return to Rome later and later every year. He is glad to have visited Spain. He tells of the accommodations and the travel there. He is going to tell the Pope of a custom of the people in Spain that he describes. Spain has the makings of saints and scholars but they are to a great extent intellectually and spiritually neglected by those who ought to be the salt of the earth. The whole nation lives too much on the glories of the past. He speaks of saints and shrines in Spain.

to Father Daniel E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan's aunt (Annie Fisher) agrees with Hudson about the change of title. The little paragraph about Lucas Malet struck her as applicable to others, especially to Marion (F.) Crawford who is exploited as a Catholic novelist when his books are detestable to Catholic sentiment. In Crawford's last book, "A Lady of Rome" he offends more deeply than usual. It has never been authoritatively said that Mrs. Harrison is a Catholic.
