(Edwards, James F.): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (Miguel A. Otero: Santa Fe, New Mexico)

Otero's letter should have been answered long ago. Mrs. Otero came to Notre Dame, but her visit was all too short. Miguel (A. Otero, Jr.) returned to Chicago with her. Miguel's ear was giving him trouble to Edwards took him to the doctor. The other evening he had to chide Miguel for his manners at the table when they had dinner with the Frawley boys. He is sure Miguel will develop into an excellent man.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Fish met three nuns in the dining car on his last trip to California, and has found the three nuns on this ship. One could not remember him, but recalled him when he mentioned the incident of paying their bill. Fish told her of Hudson's order and of St. Mary's. She told him they belonged to the order of the (Holy Child Jesus) and had been touring their house in America among which was their house in Laramie (Wyoming). The name of the nun was Mother Etheldreda of the Convent of the Holy Child of Jesus, Mayfield, England. Fish told her of (James F.) Edwards.

1906 Dec. 9
S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's note with the line from Mrs. Murphy has touched Stoddard. Stoddard has begun something for Hudson. Stoddard wishes Hudson could see his Christmas story in the "National." The (Bellamy) Storers are in this country and will make it hot for toothful Teddy (Theodore Roosevelt). Rosefildt (Roosevelt?) is now the victim of progressive insanity. The injury he is doing to the Republican Party is incalculable. The Philippinos are intelligent, quick, well mannered and they put the conceited and ill-favored Japs to shame.

Marucchi, J. Giuseppe: Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He thanks Edwards very much for the cheque. He is pleased to hear that Edwards wished to buy his classical paintings. He will not question the payments— Edwards may pay at his convenience. His Eminence has been very sorry for Father (John A.) Zahm's affair and says that he will make a great appreciation of Edwards secret advice and informations if Dr. Zahm would come to Rome. These things are always happening from the ambition of trying to get power and not liking to depend on the superiors.

1906 Dec. 14
Vattmann, Father Edward J.: Wilmette, Ill(inois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father Kelley of Extension told Vattmann that he holds $650 ready to be used for the transportation of Fili(pino) Theo(logy) Students. When Vattmann was in Washington, he was told that a bureau of information for benefit of immigrants will be established in some large cities among which is Chicago. Vattmann saw at once how much opportunity for good would open to a priest in charge of a bureau and his opinion was strengthened by an interview with Monsignor (Diomede) Falconio, who urged Vattmann to try to get the position. Secretary Cortely recommended Vattmann to Secretary Strauss. Strauss referred him to Terence V. Powderly who is in charge of the branch for immigrants. Powderly with whom Vattmann has been acquainted for years was very willing to have such a position assigned to Vattmann. Archbishop (John) Ireland assures Vattmann that he would get the assignment. The Apostolic Delegate emphasized the good effect it would have on his newly arrived countrymen to have a priest in charge of the bureau.

Vaughan encloses a report of an interview he had with a reporter from "The Sunday Herald." It shows how they have been trying to set popular opinion right on the French question.

1906 Dec. 24
Hurth, (C.S.C.), Bishop P(eter) J(oseph): (Dacca, India)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hurth anticipates reaching home just before nightfall. Hurth found his sister in a pitiable condition. Letters reached him which made him hasten his movements towards Rome and Bengal. The letters did not give him the desired material for another article on the famine. This was chiefly due to the fact that the mind of Father (Michael) Fallize (C.S.C.) was too preoccupied by other difficulties. Fallize did write of distress in several places, and the exorbitant price of rice. The rice harvest is not sufficient for the food of the people.

1906 Dec. 28
Starbuck, Charles C.: Andover, Mass(achusetts)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Starbuck sees that James Royce's appointment as ambassador is now confirmed. Starbuck read the two volumes of "the American Commonwealth." The only error he could discover was one concerning England and what makes a town a city in England. Royce is a Scotchman born in Ireland and a Presbyterian. Royce's chief point is sound-that certain geographical advantages have resulted in giving certain towns of northern France the higher ecclesiastical work.
