1907 Jan. 1
(Carroll), Fran(cis E.): Boston, (Massachusetts)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards' very kind letter came in due time; the postal cards also came. He wishes Edwards a Happy New Year and many of them. Edwards should not forget to take his liver pills and tell him just how he is in health. He encloses a medal commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the Holy Cross Cathedral; he explains about the church on the medal. It was hard sledding when Father Matigon started the first building. The medal is from Lillian Westervelt.

1907 Jan. 1
(Seton, Archbishop Robert): Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Giuseppe just brought up Edwards' letter. Edwards will perhaps know of the death of his two sisters, Helen and Elizabeth ( Seton). Helen was Sister Mary Catharine of the Order of Mercy whom he received by permission in Danston Street Chapel. She had been educated at the Sacre Soeur in Paris. He was most attached to Elizabeth who wrote him every week after William's (Seton) death. She wrote some interesting articles for the "Ave Maria". Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.) might take some notice of her life and death, getting facts from her pastor, Father (John B.C.) York. He said his three Christmas Masses in the beautiful church of the American College. Monsignor (Thomas F.) Kennedy invited him to dine there; he is an ideal rector for the College. He showed Edwards a page of the New York Herald with the disagreeable reading about the Bellamy Storer and Roosevelt affair. It is a great pity that Archbishop (John) Ireland figures in such a way. All the European papers have taken the subject up. Seton has very much sympathy for Bellamy Storer. Some may say as the priests of the Newark Diocese said; that he made more of the laity than he did of the clergy. Bishop (John J.) Keane and he were invited for a Thanksgiving dinner with the Storers and they asked Theodore Roosevelt so that Seton might meet.him. Roosevelt was not what you might call a star guest. He (Seton) seemed to be the pet guest; had he had episcopal orders he would have been in Keanes place. He has not been made a canon of St. Peter's and he would not like or want to be a Cardinal.

Ignatius, O.S.U., Sister M.: Columbia, S(outh) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They have in their possession a silver chalice lined with gold of antique make. The chalice belonged to Bishop P(atrick) N(eeson) Lynch of Charleston-now deceased. The chalice was made for an ancestor of Lynch in 1715-in Galway (Ireland). (James F.) Edwards wrote to them long ago for some memorial of Lynch to be placed in the Bishop's Memorial Hall, but the Chalice was not available at the time.

Agius, (O.S.B.), Archbishop A. Ambrose: Manila, Philippine Islands
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The offer of Bishop (Bernard J.) McQuaid is the only one up to date, and he hopes Hudson will be able to arouse the interest of other Bishops. Rome may take some step in this matter of Ecclesiastical Students for America. Agius hopes Hudson will be able to arrange a meeting with Arc(b)isho(p) (Jeremiah J.) Harty who will be in the States about the time this letter reaches Hudson. The Report of the Military Board has been mailed to Washington, (D.C.) recommending Congress to grant an appropriation for the damages sustained by the Church during the war. Aglipayism is being starved out and Agius trusts the end is not far off, but they badly need good priests.

He can scarcely find anyone to practice Italian on; they have the American accent and English is an important study in Italian schools.

Harold Becket Gibbs is the director; the clipping will show the esteem in which he is held.

O'Donaghue, Bishop D(enis): Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to Father (John W.) Cavanaugh: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Cavanaugh may recall their conversation about Solinus, who as quoted by Douglas Hyde, says that in his day there were no snakes in Ireland. He gives references looking at the snake story. If the quotation were authentic it would do much to put to rest the tradition about St. Patrick and the snakes.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

When S(toddard) came here and secured the pretty rooms he had so longed for, it seemed he was the happiest mortal on earth. Then he began to fear that he was too happy. Does Hudson believe in the testimony of the stars or in pre- or foredestination? S(toddard) has been told by astrologers, palmists and seers that he was often to approach success but never reach it. Long years ago it was predicted that a woman was to become his benefactor. He takes it to be Mrs. (Bellamy) Storer. When he arrived here on Nov(ember) 10, (19)06, he began a life that promised everything. He had renewed his yearly engagement with the "National Magazine." For 26 months he had not missed a single issue and the letters it brought him were a constant delight and encouragement. S(toddard)'s sister and he are devoted to one another. She is two years older, a confirmed invalid. From the tone of her letters, during the past two months, from Italy where she now is with their niece, S(toddard) believed her much improved. The grippe laid (Stoddard) low. His Christmas money went to pay his doctor's bill. His circulation is poor since his attacks of malarial fever in Kentucky. A letter came from his niece a few days ago saying that his sister is far from well and needs a physician. From her income she has to look after the welfare of five people besides herself. S(toddard) is not a burden to her but since leaving the C(atholic) U(niversity) of A(merica) all he has been able to do is to help his brother who for five years has been the constant attendant of his father. If his sister were taken, her income will will probably go to her adopted daughter. The day following this letter, he received one from the "National Magazine" telling him that they must for a time discontinue the publication of his articles. This cuts $50 a month out of his allowance. The "Sunset" suggests his writing for them once in a while but they mutilate everything they publish. S(toddard) has in mind to offer Hudson "Winter Rest", the visit he paid to the Catholic Home in the Berkshire Hills just before he started for California and "Summer Rest", life in the O'Connor Sanitarium in the Santa Clara Valley where Ab(bo)t(?) Kean stayed for a while and where he experienced the dreadful earthquake. S(toddard) had planned for the "National" his experiences as an actor. This may not interest Hudson's readers. Also part of his autobiography, "Learning to Write." About 30 years ago he published in a S(an) F(rancisco) magazine which lived only a few months, a selection of letters written by many famous people, all concerning his verses. They are singularly interesting because of the dissimularity of their verdicts. This sketch might give Hudson a half dozen weekly sketches. S(toddard) wonders if "The Wonder Worker of Padua" is still selling and if there is any royalty coming to him. Perhaps from the nature of this letter, Hudson will realize the state of mind S(toddard) is in.

(A gift of Dr. George N. Shuster, December 20, 1971)

1907 Jan. 28
Seton, Archbishop Rob(er) t: Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

He received a letter from his cousin, Miss Cornelia Prime, telling all about his sister Elizabeth's (Seton) death and burial. She asks him whether she should destroy or return to him his letters to his sister. He told her by mail that he wanted them to go to Edwards and that he would put Edwards in touch with her. He gives her address; she is a Protestant. His sister's executor is James P. Lee, a nephew to his brother William's (Seton) wife. He advises Edwards to write to Lee and ask to have Seton's letters sent to him by Seton's orders. Elizabeth was buried in the habit of a Tertieary of St. Francis. He would like to see her religious souvenirs in the hands of Miss Jevons. She provided in her will that her niece, Marguerite Jevons, would receive her jewelry and family momentos and her goddaughter, Elizabeth A. O'Donoghue, all her books, pictures and household effects. O'Donoghue's mother is a sister of Father (W.C.) Poole of Staten Island. It seems incredible that a letter from Cardinal (James) Gibbons in Seton's behalf would have no effect.

(Note: Miss Prime's address appears on the envelope in Edwards' handwriting.)
