Cleary, Father Henry W.: Dunedin, New Zealand
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Cleary is indebted to Hudson and (William J.) Omahan for the information secured with regard to the unfortunate Charles Chiniquy. Cleary's request is solely for the right to publish in New Zealand, with the intimation that it is by arrangement with the Ave Maria. This leaves Hudson free to dispose of the story to any paper published out of New Zealand. Cleary encloses Omahan's letter.

 Enclosure:

1906 Dec. 21
Omahan, William J.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to (Father Henry W. Cleary): (Dunedin, New Zealand)

Chiniquy was first suspended by the Archbishop of Quebec for immorality. He did penance and was permitted to exercise the ministry there for a time. Again he fell into discredit and finally left Canada. He was received into the Chicago diocese in the (18)50's and given the mission at Kankakee, Illinois. Again he was suspended, and abandoned the Church. He married. Drink does not appear to have been the cause of his fall. The result of his apostacy at Kankakee resulted in the loss of faith by quite a number who continued to adhere to him. Chiniquy drifted from the Protestant (Episcopal) Church to the Presbyterian Sect. As to the charge of his misuse of funds-no data now is accessible to Onahan.

Griffin, Martin I. J.: Ridley Park, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Griffin asks Hudson for the name of the "nephew of the fanatic that set fire to one of our churches in Philadelphia during the Know Nothing Riots." Wanted for historical purposes only. Know Nothing ought to read "Native American." The family of Louis C. Levin, the Congressman active at the time of the attack on St. Philip's Church in 1844 riots became Catholics. The son of Jos(eph) R. Flanigen of the Daily News of this city in Know Nothing times became a Catholic and is now a resident of Buffalo-Edwin Gaw Flanagen.

Lenihan, Bishop Geo(rge) M.: Auckland, N(ew) Z(ealand)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Auckland is practically a junction from all places and at this season Lenihan is deluged with vistors. In former years the late Bishop received men of brilliant attainments from other dioceses, but unfortunately they soon showed the reason of their departure from their own dioceses and gave great scandal and thereby dishonoring the good men belonging to Auckland. But most of them are now away and they are getting a fine body of young men. Lenihan's cathedral will open on April 21. Of all the churches Lenihan saw in America the one at Notre Dame is best engraved on his memory. Lenihan will have to listen to Father Kelly's pleadings to visit Hudson's country again.

McKinnie, Linda F.: St. Mary's, Notre Dame, Indiana
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They are all so sorry that Edwards was unable to be with them at the tea party—it was almost perfect. Her cousin and aunt join her in thanking Edwards for the lovely time in his bachelor quarters. She will always be grateful for his kindness to Gerald. Edwards has certainly trained the boy waiters beautifully.

Peter, C.S.C., Brother: Chicago, (Illinois)
 to J(ames F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Mr. Marks their assistant architect is going to Notre Dame, and is taking with the picture of their church that he promised to Edwards. He is assured that when he meets Edwards, his day will be made one of pleasure. He asks Edwards not to mention their new house; he and Mr. Kreig made some gratis sketches.

Fitte, C.S.C., Father S(tanislaus): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to James F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It was only last evening that Father (John W.) Cavanaugh (C.S.C.) told him about Edwards' accident. He feels very sorry for it and hopes Edwards recovery will be speedy. Meanwhile he will pray for him and the inmates of the Community House also.

O'Kennedy, Father R(ichard): Fedamore, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson was indeed privileged in getting such striking articles from Dom Gasquet and Father Hughes. O'Kennedy had scores of praise of Father Mathew Russell, Father Barry C.S.S.R. and all their clerical friends. And Hudson's lay contributors were no whit inferior. The only one he was taken back with was Seamus McManus. Today the reliques of Sir Stephen de Vere have been drawn from the dust of his pigeon holes. He will transcribe it for Hudson, and will consider whether to submit the manuscript to Charlotte O'Brien who is closely connected with the de Veres by marriage. Has Hudson seen any of Stephen Qwynn's writings? Qwynn is a nephew of Charlotte O'Brien and is at present a M(inister to) P(arliament) from Galway City. His wife and children have become Catholics. O'Kennedy hopes to have two, if not three, boys for Hudson's order in 1908, and hopes to have two or three girls for Mother Bethlehem at the same time.

Prichard, A.M.: Charleston, W(est) V(irgini)a
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He cannot fully express his appreciation of Edwards compliment. With honesty and loyalty he has never ceased to find success. He would be delighted to visit Notre Dame, but with a loving wife and their darling baby girl making home so sweet it is hard to leave. He invites Edwards there.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard has been at work on "Winter Rest," and is gradually recovering from the grippe. Father Harry Stark, C.S.P., who was in Stoddard's class at the C(atholic) U(niversity) of A(merica) is just back from a mission tour of Hawaii and has been down to see Stoddard. Stark is twenty-six and a delightful young priest. Kenneth (O'Connor) is twenty-seven and is with some vaudeville troupe in the East. When (O'Connor) went to Cuba he seemed to have had some of his finer instincts blunted. Has Hudson seen the Burr McIntoshes Monthly with Stoddard's picture in it?

Otero, M(iguel) A.: Santa Fe, N(ew) M(exico)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He received Edwards letter and also one from Doctor (John L.) Gish and is sending Miguel (A. Otero, Jr.) a draft for the $65. He is willing to pay any necessary doctors' bill for Miguel, but the amount looked unreasonable. He is going to his sheep ranch; the mining matter awaits action from London.

Spearman, Frank H(amilton): Rome, Italy
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The Northwestern Railroad is condemning a lot of property in Chicago for a new terminal and in the tract is a piece belonging to Mrs. Spearman, being an early home of the Lonergans. Spearman spent his recreation period while in Chicago in quarrelling with the railroad company about the compensation for the property. This is why Spearman missed Hudson last fall. Spearman is sorry Hudson did not like "Whispering Smith." Mr. Brownell has paid it a tribute so high as to repay Spearman for all the labor. Spearman and his family are settled in a pleasant hotel. Clarke, Lonergan, Frank and Arthur, are all busy. Spearman's Ave goes to his brother in Evanston. They have met Madre Sant' Angela Lincoln, assistant General of the Ursulines. She is from Cincinnati and was sent by Archbishop Elder to the Indian Missions in Montana, from where she came to Rome. She is another such type as Sister Rita. Spearman has been most kindly received at the Vatican and has made some delightful acquaintance there, especially, that of Cardinal Mery Del Val and Monsignors Bisleti and Santo Paolo.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan and her aunt (Annie Fisher) are glad Hudson liked the story. Tiernan will do her best to send the Easter story Hudson wants. She always found short stories extremely difficult, but she will try again for Hudson.

Gibbs, M(ichael) P.: St. Johns, Newfoundland
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Gibbs is about to deliver some lectures on socialism and needs literature on the subject. Gibbs is a Roman Catholic and proposes to deal with the subject from the standpoint of a Catholic. Socialism was unknown in Newfoundland but recently a club for its propagation was formed and being closely identified with the working classes Gibbs is anxious to prevent its growth. If Hudson would send books or pamphlets on socialism Gibbs will feel deeply indebted.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard will begin the companion piece "Summer Rest" tomorrow. After this he will do a bit of the autobiography telling how he began to write. Lately Stoddard has been so faint hearted that he has spoken to Father (Ramon M.) Mestres concerning a little corner in the cemeterey there. Stoddard's mother and two brothers are buried in Lone Mountain, S(an) F(rancisco) but no more burials are permitted there. The earthquake of late seems to have been too much for Stoddard.

Lawson, Edna: Deadwood, S(outh) D(akota)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She is one of the old girls of the Alma Mater across the way. If Edwards looks at the time, the place, the girl, he will remember. Mr. Nathan (E.) Franklin, a friend of Edwards told her that Edwards was expected out there during the summer. She asks him to bring Father (James J.) French, (C.S.C.) along with him.

to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Burns, C.S.C., J(ames) A.: Brookland, D.C.
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He hopes Edwards is still at the great work to which he has devoted so many years—collecting historical material, so as to make Notre Dame the Catholic Historical center of America. It is only in the future Edwards' work will be appreciated properly. The attitude of trying to keep up with the growth of the country will pass as it has in the East and what was commonplace or worthless will be regarded as veritable historic treasures. He wants some information from original sources about Father (Gabriel) Richard's educational work and views. (Martin I. J.) Griffin has printed some about him.

S(toddard) C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)

Stoddard has had a letter from Mrs. (Bellamy) Storer in which she wants him to telegraph her at once that he will meet them in New York in April to sail with them for Europe and spend the summer at their Chateau in Versailles. She will pay all Stoddard's expenses from Monterey until he returns to Monterey again. Stoddard has written to decline. He wants to do much work this summer and hardly has the strength for the strenuous life he should have to lead with the Storers.

He thanks Edwards very much for his kind letter of introduction to Archbishop (Robert) Seton. He will cal l on him and deliver the Message. Four of them went to see the Pope and through Seton he is going to try for a private audience. He had a little silver crucifix blessed which he now regards as his dearest treasure. They are having a delightful trip; through the cathedral towns of England, London, Paris, through Spain and the Reveria to Florence and then to Rome the most interesting and most beautiful place they have yet seen. Give his regards to Father Hudson.

(MacDonnell), Sister M. Magdalene: Bom Successo, (Portugal)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister was sorry to hear that he is now a constant sufferer. It is overwork; Hudson needs a holiday of six months of complete rest. Has Hudson read "Grapes and Thorns" by M. A. T.? They had a Military Festival on January 20th. Portugal openly declared its faith by a Military Mass at which the King, Queens, Princes, and Government officials assisted. The Nuncio was present, Bishop Giulio Tonti. The present Prime Minister is a very good Catholic. Hudson should come to Europe and they will send him back cured.
