O'Donaghue, Bishop (D(enis): Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has the pleasure of returning the documents which Edwards sent Mrs. Dunn. They are not exactly what he wants. He is looking for original old documents in any way connected with the early history of Indiana. Dunn says Chichipe Outipe and Twin Lakes are the same place. Dunn suggests Edwards prepare a paper for the Historical Society by editing the documents he sends and it would be published with his name.

(Hill), C.P., Father Edmund: Birmingham, England
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The mission in Mile End Road, E. London, proved as successful as could have been reasonably expected. Mission work has suffered in London from Cardinal (Henry Edward) Manning's opposition to the Regulars. Hill is mailing two articles today. Has Hudson seen Dr. Lapponi's book? Hill gave a retreat in Dublin and now has another to the Poor Clares. Their provincial who sailed for Australia via the United States in October has been spending Holy Week in the Holy Land. Hill has had an inspiration to go to Australia to make the sacrifice of life-long separation from family and friends for the salvation of his brother's soul. If he doesn't go to Australia he will ask to return to America. Hill asks to be remembered to Sister B.

Lloyd, Reverend Arthur: Tokyo, (Japan)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Lloyd is no relative of the Mr. Lloyd who recently came over to Hudson. All his relatives are in service in India. Lloyd believes he is the only one of his family that ever took orders. Lloyd sent Hudson a copy of a book on Amida, which he has just brought out. Lloyd thanks Hudson for suggesting the name of Bishop (Adolph) Medleycott whose book Lloyd knows. The first Englishman in India was Father Thomas Stepheus, S.J., expelled from New College, Oxford at the accession of Queen Elizabeth. Another piece of literary work that he is beginning to edit is a catechism prepared by one of the French priests. In a week or two Lloyd will send Hudson another of his writings, "History of the Shushi Philosophy in Japan."

Hsieh, Francis Xavier: Wei-Hai-Wei, (China)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.(C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was born a pagan in Chefoo, and went to the Marist Brothers school in Shanghai, St. Francis Xavier's College. He was instructed and baptized by a French Brother and returned to Chefoo and studied at the Protestant school and lost his faith. Then he met Father Wilfrid Hallam, O.F.M., now in charge of the Catholic Mission at Weihaiwei and Hallam led him back to the Church. He is now employed as a clerk and interpreter to the Secretary to Government. He holds several half-hour meetings in the week for the explanation of the chief doctrines of the Church. In general, the people are indifferent as regards religious matters because of paganism, but they are well disposed.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard knows that "Summer Rest" reached Hudson but does not know whether it pleased him. He is going over the "Confessions". Father (Ramon M.) Mestres is about to be transferred to San Diego, but petitions are being circulated begging Bishop Conaty to permit him to remain at Monterey where he has done much good during the last fourteen years. His occasional substitute from Ireland, a Franciscan, disgusts everyone. Stoddard will send the Father (Joseph) Damien (de Veuster, SS.CC.) proofs to Mrs. (Bellamy) Storer. Cannot Hudson in the new Edition of "The Lepers" introduce the note from Mrs. Stevenson? Stoddard can understand how the copy forwarded by Dutton might prove only an encumbrance.

Conrardy, Father Lambert L.: New Orleans, L(ouisian)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Conrardy is lecturing and collecting to start a leper settlement in the Vicariate of Canton under the supervision of Bishop (Jean-Marie) Merel. Conrardy remained at Molokai after the death of Father Damien (de Veuster SS.CC.) until Jan(uary) 1906 when Father Pamphile (SS.CC.) came to Molokai. Conrardy went to China and was unable to start his work and came back to Oregon and studied medicine. Conrardy applied to Canton when Bishop Chausser died in 1902. Merel sent him to Father Fleaurau to see if Conrardy was still able to go to China. Conrardy accepted and having the authorization to collect for the lepers began the work in Belgium. He came back in December, 1905 to the United States of which he has been a citizen since 1874. In August he will leave for China to start the work. Father (Peter) Franciscus (C.S.C.) who is in New Orleans spoke to Conrardy about Hudson. Conrardy asks if Hudson would like to help them in this work. Conrardy encloses (no enclosure) copies of letters from Archbishop Christie of Oregon, Merel and Doctor Ashmare (?) of New York.

The oldest child of M. Loras had two sons who became Trappists. Her daughter was the mother of Father (L.) De Cailly who was their parish priest. They have a French manuscript which gives the family history. Morrison is sending Hudson the manuscript in the hope that he might find some part of it fit to publish.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

McQuaid is receiving more than his share of newspaper notoriety lately. A year ago McQuaid asked that the Archbishops at Washington should consider what should be done for the religious care of the five or six thousands Catholic men at non-Catholic Universities. This subject was thrown into the waste basket and at this year's meeting McQuaid informed them of what he proposed to do at Cornell University. It was his intention to build a residence with two or more capable priests, a chapel and a lecture hall, and to ask the Cornell authorities to give credit to young men who may have taken scholastic philosophy, psychology, and medieval history. The president of Cornell is to visit McQuaid and he is confident that they shall arrive at a harmonious agreement. McQuaid is as much opposed as ever to Catholic young men going to non-Catholic Universities. (Katherine E.) Conway is deeply grateful to Notre Dame for the high honor conferred on her.

Perry, Bliss: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

White's attention to Hudson's criticisms of the passage about the friar who attended Cavour in his dying hours. It is a pleasure to know that Hudson liked the spirit of the article by Dean Hodges. They think Hodges shows a great deal of common sense as well as spiritual mindedness.
