Seton, Archbishop Robert: Hamburg, (Germany)
to (James F.) Edwards: Boston, Mass(achusetts)

He left Rome the 29th of June. The weather in Germany has been cold and he had to get different clothes. He names the places he visited; Spain was more interesting. He is tired of Germany, it has not the thoroughly Catholic atmosphere of Spain and Italy. He tells of the people in the hotel from America. Mr. Gridley spoke of the Church very seriously; he is from Chicago and knows Bishop (John L. Spalding and Father (Michael) Weldon and a Father Burke. He is a nephew of Captain Gridley who commanded the "Olympia" under Dewey at Manila. He called one evening before leaving, on Father Esser, O.P. He told Seton about the atrocious letters written to the Propaganda against any man whose name is sent for a Bishopric in the United States. Edwards would be surprised how many people openly express their astonishment that a man like Seton is not an Archbishop in his own country. (Sebastian) Cardinal Martinelli could not understand this neglect of Seton.

The (Bellamy) Storers sail for Boston on August 24 and have leased the Crowningshield mansion for a year. They wish Stoddard to join them for the winter and he may do so. The Storers will be happy to have their name associated with "Lepers of Molokai". He received Edwards' letter from Boston. He understands that Mr. Rodey denies the interview and says that he did not make the statements contained in the Boston Globe. Rodey has been bitter since his political defeat in 1904 by Otero and friends. Governor of New Mexico, George Curry, was inaugurated last week. Miguel (A.Otero, Jr.) is improved. If his health should fail again he feels compelled to change Miguel from Notre Dame.

Satalli and Leo XIII.

Smith, Father J(ohn) T(albot): Cliff Haven, N(ew) Y(ork)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Smith's life has been troubled since he saw Hudson in May. He thinks the trouble ended last week, when they unveiled the Mosher memorial, received Governor Hughes, managed the Keenan show, and handled a crowd of 1200 guests. He has not done much at the Who's Who and is not sure of the Dobb's Ferry affair. Father (John) Kavanagh did not get here. Smith was in Montreal a few days ago, and picked up an account of the daily started in Quebec by Archbishop (Louis Nazaire) Begin. Smith will have a breathing spell from this week on as the crowd begins to diminish. (James C.) Monaghan arrived this morning. McMillan, Mullany, Monaghan, and Dr. Walsh send greetings.

1907 Aug. 24
Spalding, James Field: Cambridge, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Spalding is deeply interested in Father (Robert Hugh) Benson's papers and particularly in the closing one where the wide difference between the Church and Anglicanism is so strongly yet so charitably described. Spalding thinks Hudson did well to expand the "Note" in the issue of August 3 into the article of this week on "Fortifying the Young." Spalding is not presenting any new course of lectures this year but only fixing upon a new set of subjects. Mrs. Spalding has not been well for about a month but he thinks she is improving.

Harris, Miriam Coles: Fontaine-le-Dun, (France)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Harris has asked the publishers of her story to send Hudson an advance copy. She is nervous about it as it is the first novel she has written since she became a Catholic. Harris has not forgotten Hudson's letter he wrote to her about "Rutledge" when she was stopping at Nahant.

Raupert, J(ohn) Godfrey: Hoboken, N(ew) J(ersey)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Raupert is obliged to Hudson for his most kind criticism of "Ten Years in Anglican Orders." The book is sold in a popular edition in England. Raupert is giving his name in connection with these books as Hudson can see from the enclosed publisher's note. Raupert's friends do not think he has aided his cause by observing anonymity. Father (James) Goggin and Raupert leave New York Wednesday for London. Raupert will probably return next year with a view to lecturing in various centers, and then shall have the pleasure of meeting Hudson personally.

Loughead, Flora Haines: Alma, California
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Adele Ware told her of how Hudson inquired of Loughead's welfare after the Earthquake. It was not until last January that Loughead was able to come home. She has been very busy, but thinks she will now have better opportunities to write. Loughead will try to drop in and see Ware who unknowingly has suggested to her a book which Loughead is aching to write. Ware's bravery and faith under affliction is something inspiring. Loughead sends Hudson a short serial story to-day.

Seton, Archbishop Robert: Hamburg, (Germany)
 to (James F.) Edwards:

He is glad to hear that Edwards' health has improved. Last Wednesday was his 68th birthday. He missed a letter from Elizabeth (Seton). An American lady sent him some flowers. He gives his objections to the Teuton— the grunting language, his abrupt ways, the physical. coarseness of his face and his guzzle-wuzzle table manners. It is incredible the universal antipathy between Germans and Americans. It was a great outrage to set Bishop (Winard Michael) Wigger over the Newark or any American diocese. He always travels with his portable altar. He met a Sister that spoke English and had been at St. Mary's Academy near Notre Dame. He gives his future plan of travel.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan would have written to thank Hudson for the check for $150, but for the fact that Hudson said he would write again in a few days. His second letter has arrived and also the check for $8.00 completing the payment for her aunt's (C. Fisher) story. Her aunt thanks Hudson and is pleased his readers liked her story. Would Hudson care to bring it out in book form? Or who could he recommend to do it? Personally Tiernan is determined never again to have anything to do with Catholic publishers.
