O'Sullivan, Father T(imothy) D.:
Chicago, (Illinois)
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He ransacked his library for duplicates of his Brownson volumes but it seems he let Father Fanning of the diocese of Peoria take them. It's too bad Edwards didn't stay for P.O'S Silver Wedding. He tells all about the celebration. Miss Castle was impressed by Edwards. He has been trying to borrow some money for their new church — but in vain!

Hudson is not to wonder why he has not acted upon his proposal. He has a good deal of writing for a couple of Catholic papers. He has attacked Goldwin Smith from time to time. He understands Smith has great esteem for Hudson and wishes Hudson could give him a prescription for conversion.

He tells of his mixup of that bishop with the titles of Bishop (James F.) Wood. Muldoon is sure the Notre Dame Archives has documents to give the correct information.

Seton, Archbishop Robert:
Rome, (Italy)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He arrived back after his travels on October 31. He is not going to write his biography for a Roman publication. Such an idea! He is writing privately notes of incidents of his infancy, youth and manhood which would be invaluable to anyone who write his biography. He would not think of offering his good writing and peculiar style to American Catholic editors. His sympathies are more with the Irish Colleges in Rome than with the English or Scotch Colleges. He is to give a lecture there in the spring. His article "Two Months in Spain" is to be published in "The Sever Hills" printed in Rome, published by James Duffy and Company in Dublin. He never knew Archbishop Cullen late of Dublin (the first Irish-Cardinal) was actually named coadjutor to Bishop (John) England and came near embarking for Charleston. He is going to try to come to America next year for the Centennial of Mount Saint Mary College celebrated in June 1908. He talks about what he could and can do, how he could dress and does at times (in knee britches). Edwards will be surprised how naturally he writes and how observant a traveler he is. If Edwards wants him to write an autobiography he ought to have the loan of all his diaries.

Vaughan, Father John S(tephen):
Rome, Italy
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Vaughan has been busy since his return to Rome. Has Hudson had any communications with the Archbishop of St. Louis regarding the proposed preface? Vaughan's is among the four names suggested to fill the vacant see of Northampton. Vaughan has been writing what might be called a defense of Card(inal) (John H.) Newman in the periodical, "Rome", and has asked the editor to send Hudson a copy.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):

Egan has read "A War Cloud that Will Pass", with deep interest. If Hudson had been behind the scenes in the State Department he could not have better known the truth. The Japanese government did not want war. Hazeltine(?) wrote it; he is amazingly clever and well-educated, but he hates the president. Has the President, Mr. Root, or Mr. Bacon seen it?

(Egan), M(aurice Francis):
Copenhagen, Denmark
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Egan heard from (William J.) Onahan that Hudson is in excellent health and spirits. Egan misses his lectures and the students at the University. Without better apparatus and some definite system of management on the part of the authorities, he could not do his duty at the University as fully as he hoped to do. Egan reiterates his admiration for Hudson's article on the Japanese situation. Does Hudson remember Mrs. Munro who seems to show signs of throwing off theosophy? Egan had a letter from her. Letters from France show a curious cleavage between the laity and the bishops. The French laity are somewhat irritated by having a responsibility trust upon them for which they had neither training nor preparation. He sees the French legation in church on Sunday. Egan is friendly with the De Beaucaires.

He instructs Edwards to tell him when he can come to visit Rome. Life is lonely for him there because he hasn't work to do. He asks Edwards to copy some material out of a book for him. The Rector of the American College has asked him to write his reminiscences of that time for the semi-centennial of the College, in 1909. He sends a brief account of the propagating of the faith and its progress among his fellow countrymen. On Sunday in the Chapel at St. Joseph's Mission under Father Wilfrid Hallam, O.F.M. there has been for the many months a good congregation at Holy Mass.
