Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The (Bellamy) Storers are to return to Europe the last week of this month. The world seems empty to Stoddard. Two of his old friends have died since he dined with them at Christmas. Stoddard's only nephew is a liar, thief, vagabond, and jail-bird. Kenneth O'Connor has become at 28 a common sot and a bummer. That Cuban Campaign was the beginning of his downfall.

(Huffer), Leo:
Paris, France
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He wants to tell Edwards how extremely sorry he was to hear of Edwards' recent illness. Edwards is as one of the family. It is too wonderful that this should have happened to Edwards who leads such a quiet and regular life. He advises him to be careful.

Claypool, John W.:
Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to (James F.) Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana
He notes with regret what Edwards says about himself and is glad it is not the end. (Joseph) Emminger and Werner Amiet were sorry to hear the news when he read Edwards' letter to them. As to George (Rhodius), conditions are the same as Edwards left them. The court told him not to force himself, just to wait; he is not pleased with it.

Dorsey, E(lla) L(oraine):
(Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The grippe hit Dorsey before Christmas, but she wants to send the semi-annual copyright check of $27.90. Mamie, Dorothy, and Bennett are in Pensacola. Dorsey's sister, Mrs. Mohun, has had desparate anxiety about two of her daughters' health.

Onahan, William J.:
Chicago, (Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Onahan is sending Hudson a little brochure—an Ave Maria which may have escaped Hudson's research. It is distressing to hear of (James F.) Edwards' physical affliction. March 10 will be the sad anniversary of his overwhelming bereavement.

to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):

Many priests are remembering Stoddard's father in their Masses. Stoddard does not seem to rise out of the depths. The tinted letters on the title page of the "Lepers" are certainly effective.

Gilbert, Rosa (Mulholland):
Blackrock, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
She will not be able to send Hudson the short story for Easter. She is busy on a long piece of work from which it would be difficult to turn her attention. As Hudson did not reply, she sent the article on Achile elsewhere.

Agius, Archbishop A. Ambrose:
Manila, Philippine Islands
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The holding of their first Provincial Council, and Agius' absence of 2 months from Manila are responsible for his long silence. Agius made a visitation to Northern Luzon and covered some 2300 miles. Agius' heart was rent to see the spiritual desolation of some of the Provinces. He left his secretary to look after about ten parishes until they can get help from Europe. More money is needed, America has already responded generously and he dare not ask again. The Mill Hill Fathers and a band of priests from Belgium are working wonders.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
In what one of Newman's volumes does one find the best of his style? She wants to give a book of his to a person who has read little or nothing of his writing. Did not Mr. Lilley bring out a book of Newman's selected master-pieces?

Perhaps "Corpus Christi at Molokai" might be run in as No. XV. Stoddard received Communion in the crypt at the tomb of San Carlos while his body was exposed to view. Life was different to Stoddard then.

Hsieh, Francis Xavier:
Wei Hai Wei, (China)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hsieh realizes Hudson's feelings towards a Chinese convert penitent. Hsieh's parents are Cantonese; he is 21. Being an interpreter he is able to converse in English. Hsieh begs Hudson to thank his benefactor. It is a great blessing for the mission to possess an organ of its own. Father Wilfrid Hallam feels much obliged for Hudson's interest in his mission. Hsieh's friend, Anthony Chang, was baptised on Christmas Eve. A very useful work on China has been recently published at Shanghai by the Jesuit Fathers: Richard's "Geography of the Chinese Empire." Father John Smith's account in Donahoe's Magazine regarding the establishment at Notre Dame is interesting.

McCullough, Rose A.:
St. Mary's, (Notre Dame, Indiana)
to (James F.) Edwards:

Their class is going to have a little play on Tuesday to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and she wants Edwards to come. The Freshmen don't boast of being brilliant stars but she thinks their efforts will be at least amusing.

(Carroll), Alice:
Boston, (Massachusetts)
to (James F. Edwards:

She wants to thank Edwards for his gift and she must tell him all about it. Not one word of complaint has there been in Edwards' letters about his illness. She calls the birds God's dew-drops. Edwards must get better and better; he will get well again.

Seton, Archbishop Rob(ert):
Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Miss Hamilton called and brought the three diaries. The last time he wrote he said he was sorry he asked for the diaries and not to send them. He has been suffering from a hard cyst on his right shoulder which had to be removed. He pontificated at the Irish Franciscans. He is old and feeble. Miss Hamilton told him that Edwards had been very ill. He is already thinking of where he will go in the summer. He tells of his publications. He wishes he could hear something about the trial for insubordination of Father Hugh P.) Fleming vs. Bishop (John J.) O'Connor. Neither does he know anything about Father (John A.) Zahm, (C.S.C.) further than what Edwards told him — that he had disappeared. Archbishop (Patrick W.) Riordan was in Rome, and they talked. He is also in the dark about the Hanna-Breen affair and the row in the Rochester (New York) diocese.

Ryan, Father John A(ugustine):
St. Paul, (Minnesota)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.:

Ryan thanks Hudson for his kind reference to him in the Ave Maria of the 14th. Hudson's appreciation of the quality of specificness encourages Ryan more than Hudson is perhaps aware.

MacManus, Seamus:
Falmouth, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
MacManus is just now through with a new novel entitled "Rose of the Eskar". MacManus is speculating where he shall have it published serially before putting it out in book form. Would such a story appeal to Hudson for serial publication?

Francis, O.M.I., Father J( ):
Mannar, Ceylon
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Francis is now a priest. He is now a missionary in the jungles of the island of Mannar. The poverty of the place is appalling. Francis asks Hudson for a corner in the Ave Maria to advertise himself as a black beggar. Francis is an unfortunate black son of the poor soil. He is trying to evangelize and hopes Hudson will take him under his patronage.

Clarke, Alice C.:
Petworth, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Clarke thanks Hudson for the check of $53.25. She is forwarding $5 to (Johannes) Jorgensen as he informed her that he considered a fee was due to him. Jorgensen appears extremely annoyed at the "transformation" of his book. Jorgensen seems to be a rather discontented individual, and Clarke only knows him through some mutual friends in Germany. He has just published a Life of St. Francis.

Seton, Archbishop Robert:
Rome, Italy
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He met all those people that know Notre Dame, Miss Hamilton, Mother Pauline, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Ja(me)s Connor and her daughter, Mrs. Robinson. It seems so harsh for the action of the Bishop who excommunicated Miss Hamilton for being a bridesmaid at a Protestant marriage. Seton is sure that she is a good girl. He speaks of his diaries. The little diaries are uninteresting, but when he goes over them again, he may find time to add a few lines and they will be perhaps less uninteresting. He speaks of the time spent in New Jersey. He speaks of his publications. On St. Patrick's Day, he pontificated at St. Isador's and Father Condon gave the sermon.

(Wattson, Reverend Lewis Thomas) Paul James Francis, S.A.:
Garrison, New York
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Francis has no doubt Spencer Jones will be much pleased with Hudson's reference to his terse definition of "Development" in the Catholic sense. Francis will send it to him at once. He is glad to hear that a review of "The Prince of the Apostles" is at last to appear in the Ave Maria. Francis does not know why Monsignor (T.J.) Capel failed his promise.
