Bakewell, Frank S.: Louisville, K(entucky)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Bakewell has just read Hudson's kind remarks and letter of his late brother. In 1854 Bakewell was business manager of the Sh(epherd) of the Valley, and remembers Robert A. Bakewell coming to his bedside to read that editorial. Bakewell desired him not to publish it. Rev. Dr. Eaton, Baptist, and Rev. Dr. Witherspoon, Pres(byterian), who had published a pamphlet controversy between them and a priest at Petersburg quoted from the Shepherd of the Valley. At Washington after the Civil War, Bakewell made the acquaintance of a Mr. Foley who graduated from Notre Dame about 1853. His uncle had given Bakewell conditional baptism in Toledo, O(hio). Bakewell's brother, Father Fred (Bakewell), a Sulpician, was converted there.

E(gan), M(aurice) F(rancis): Copenhagen, (Denmark)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Egan was amazed at what Hudson said of Neill in his note. It is true, he demands much. There are many things to study there. Yesterday Egan asked Linberg why Denmark became Lutheran. Rosenkrantz thinks it was due to the theological ignorance of the bishops. Egan will ask Jorgensen. Egan was so overworked at the University. The Catholic University has a lot of good men. Father Carrier is an unusual man.

1908 Aug. 3
Kittell, Father Ferdinand: Loretto, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson in his obituary notice of Father William Burns stated that Mrs. Burns, after the death of her husband, retired to a convent. She did, as a boarder, not a religious. She had four daughters in the Ursulines. While in Rome, on diocesan business in 1881-1882, Kittell compiled the life of Madame Alphonse de Champel, O.S.U., (Kittell devotes most of the letter to details of her life.) The order split into two communities with Mother Gertrude Burns O.S.U. with the majority.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The letter from Hudson's Chinese friend is certainly surprising. Stoddard is sending a photo of himself. The earthquake and his father's death have nearly finished him. Stoddard's brother is going blind and will soon be helpless. The friends he was hoping to join in Salem this winter cannot receive him save as a guest for a few days.

They certainly should have taken the matter up with Hudson as they have on previous occasions obtained authorization to run such stories.

1908 Aug. 22
Richardson, Marion M(uir): Denver, Colo(rado)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Richardson noticed in today's Ave Maria that Hudson spoke of the experience of a reformed Mormon. What Hudson says is all true, but the truth cannot be told. The Democrats as a party have not allied themselves with the Mormons. This year they face a political contest. Before the last election John Shafroth, their Congressman, told her that they need expect nothing from the party in power. Judge Timothy E. Howard, Hudson's own professor, intimated a similar opinion. In six months her son will be of age; her only hope is that he may live to enjoy his inheritance which is based upon the success of Bryan. The American Masonic order is also pledged against Mormonism.

Seton, Archbishop Robert: Prague, (Czecho-Slovakia)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Nantasket, Massachusetts)

He loves to travel here and there at his own sweet will and his letters are delayed in reaching him. He thanks God Edwards is getting to be himself again. He was pleased with Miss Hamilton. Himan writes that Bishop (Denis J.) O'Connell and (James) Cardinal Gibbons were much disappointed not to find Seton in Rome. He will not break up his annual four months travel—life is dull for him in Rome— to be there in September for the Pope's Jubilee. He read the time was changed from November. He assisted in a seat of honor at the Pontifical Mass given for the Emperor's birthday by (leo) Cardinal Skrbensky. He gives his present itinerary. He speaks of the "Seven Hills" magazine of the Irish College in Rome. People say that he writes so well and perhaps he does. There were original letters of Bishop (John) England published in "Seven Hills" which were a revelation to him. Edwards, who knows everything about the Church in America, doubtless knew; but he certainly never suspected before that (Paul) Cardinal Cullen had actually been appointed coadjutor to the Bishop of Charleston, (John England). He and many people are disappointed that he (Seton) was not given a see in his native country. Gibbons seems to lack back-bone. He tells why he thinks so. Gibbons wrote strong letters to the Pope telling what Seton had done and that he was not rich, asking for a canonry at St. Peter's; a dozen stalls have been filled since. The Cardinal Secretary of State has lived off the church all his life and doubtless hates an American who visits him but does not court him. It is disgraceful that he has to beg intentions. He speaks of his needs. Gibbons should remember that he owes his position to Seton's kinsman, Archbishop (James) Roosevelt Bayley. (Joseph) Cardinal Vivesy Tuto Calasancitius volunteered to say that the Chapter of St. Peter's ought to feel honored to have an American Archbishop a member. Archbishop (Patrick W.) Riordan characterized the whole thing as an outrage.

(Hill), C.P., Father Edmund: Birmingham, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hill is not returning to America this summer. Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.) came to see him, expecting to take Hill back with him. Their Provincial Chapter went off smoothly. Hill has given up the idea of going to Australia. Recently he gave a retreat in Manchester to some nuns, among them, a sister of the late Francis Thompson—Mother Mary Austin (Thompson). Thompson was a genius, undoubtedly something in the Keats order.
