Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Indiana
 to (James F. Edwards:

He hopes Edwards is still enjoying his vacation and improving in health. Father (Andrew) Morrissey (C.S.C.) and he were in Rochester for the celebration on the 20th ultima and much work accumulated over the two days they were gone. The ppor old Bishop cannot last much longer; he is changed, feeble, and emaciated, but he made a capital speech. Bishop (Camillus P.) Maes made inquiries about Edwards when at the Eucharist Convention. No news of Mr. (Frederick) Fish since Edwards left. He gives the few changes of the sisters. The weather is now good.

Raupert, J(ohn) Godfrey: New York, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Raupert arrived on Friday from London, and is busy consulting with his friends. He is also writing to the heads of seminaries inquiring when his visit would be convenient. When would Hudson like him to come to Notre Dame? At present he is bearing the entire burden of the mission. The authorities in Rome were so keen about his work that he could not decline. The Paulists and the Fathers of St. Joseph here seem to think that he would do well to connect himself with the Knights of Columbus.

Curtis, Georgina Pell: Chicago, (Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Curtis returned September 1. The book is all ready to send to the publisher save for three belated ones. Father Pardow, S.J. has written to her that he has written to Mother Alphonsa Lathrop urging her to give Curtis her story. She encloses a list of those who make the book. Curtis has been very particular and has rejected a countless number that did not come up to her standard. Mrs. NixonRoulet was one of them. P.S. Miss Churchill wrote and gave her permission to use her name.

Hallam, O.F.M., Father Wilfrid M.: Weihaiwei, China
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Since last spring a great change forward has taken place at the mission. It began on the visit of their new Coadjutor Bishop Odeodat Wittner, O.F.M. who founded the mission. Wittner sent Hallam the aid of a Chinese priest, and decided to get the Sisters to come as soon as possible, and set about buying a Chinese house. Hallam now has the help of the Chinese priest and three catechists, and has staying with him a missionary who has overworked himself and must take a complete rest. Francis Xavier Hsieh is passing through the most critical part of his life, but remains firm in his decision to follow up his vocation to the priesthood.

Vaughan, Father John S(tephen): Bournemouth, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The page proofs of his volume have reached him. Vaughan has written to Monsignor Moyes to ask him to write a little introduction. As to the "Dangers" Vaughan hopes Hudson will use stout paper that will bulk out into a goodly sized volume. He wishes he could accept Hudson's invitation to pay him a long visit. Their Eucharist Congress was a real success and Vaughan acted as deacon to the Cardinal Legate on the closing Sunday. He is now off to preach in Manchester, and then returns to the pulpit in Westminster Cathedral on all Sundays of October.

Amiet, Werner: Indianapolis, (Indiana)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

They regret Edwards' absence very much. G(eorge) R(hodius) and Berryhill went to Asbury Park and stayed there for four weeks returning by way of New York. The D…. woman was not of the party. The annullment case has been continued until the middle of November. All the witnesses from out of town were there ready to give testimony against the D…. woman. Rhodius' illness is progressive; he loses little by little. (John W.) Claypool and Joe Emminger send regards. He is fifty years old today!

Ward, William Hayes: New York, (New York)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ward thanks Hudson for the kind word in the Ave Maria—other Catholic papers have similarly appreciated what he has written. But Ward thinks of the "cussing" he shall get for the article on the Indep(endent) crossing the Atlantic. They are wholly with the "Americanist". "Modernist" included Catholics—and there are such. Even Archbishop (John) Ireland does not repeal the sermon Ward heard him deliver in Baltimore at the Centennial.
