Bandini, Father P(eter): Tontitown, Arkansas
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Bandini thanks Hudson for the paragraph in the Ave Maria about his people of Tontitown. If they can furnish suggestions and be a help in trying to start other settlements, he thinks it will be a godsend to many Catholic immigrants who come to America. Bandini in an article for the Monitor utilized a statement found in the Dec. 7th, 1901 Ave Maria which confirmed his claims.

He received Edwards' New Year's card and was very glad to hear from Edwards. Edwards doesn't know how he has missed N.D. this year. (Carroll), Frank (E.): Boston, Mass(achusetts)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards' letter came today from Maumee. The beautiful presents were great gifts to them — poor mortals. Alice (Carroll) said the bust was that of St. Francis. He has read the life of St. Francis but has never come in contact with an exact picture of the Saint. Edwards should tell them more about the treasure.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard does not know how to thank Hudson for all the things sent. He has been sad these holidays. He dined alone on Christmas in spite of three invitations. Stoddard no longer has faith in his works. Would Hudson like the first part of his autobiography—"Childhood"? He must get to work and forget last year. Mrs. Storer urges Stoddard to come east in May.

Grove, Frederick Aloysius, C.SS.R.: Kirkwood, M(issouri)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He hopes Edwards will pardon him for not writing before this. He is at the Redemptorist Preparatory College studying for the holy Priesthood; he believes he has a vocation for that order. He hopes Edwards is well and not overworking himself. He asks about the Document of Plenary Indulgence for his family and himself, and the relic of St. Aloysius. Roland LePointe said that he had met Edwards this summer on one of his collecting tours; he hopes Edwards has some more valuable additions for the Bishop's Memorial Hall.

Mathews, John L.: Evanston, Ill(inois)
 to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Hudson's card and editorial on "Tontitown", (Arkansas) reached him. Mathews is pleased with what Hudson has written. The article has stirred up a large amount of discussion both in and out of Arkansas. Mathews hopes to follow it up with work being done on the conservation of immigrant virtues by the fostering of the talents of Italian children in public schools. Father (Peter) Bandini deserves the best. Mathews asks Hudson to send a copy of the editorial to John Cosgrave editor of "Everybody's" in New York.

Kittell, Father Ferdinand: Loretto, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Kittell corrects what he believes to be two syntactical errors in the Ave Maria. Last Saturday Kittell sent the protest to Bishop (John Francis) Canevin. It was endorsed by Bishop (Eugene) Garvey and signed by all the priests concerned. They are fighting mad and if Canevin doesn't give them redress they will have to employ other measures.

Norton, Bishop John H.: Petersburg, South Australia

Norton is grateful to Hudson for the complimentary copy of the Ave Maria. He recommends it as far as he can. His duties as bishop require more than ordinary strength in parts such as theirs.

1909 Jan. 17
Spalding, James Field: Cambridge, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It must be Hudson will change his mind as to his pleasure in reading Spalding's story in the new "Roads": for various reasons Spalding has decided not to write at any great length. Spalding will not see Hudson this winter at St. Mary's— judging from Hudson's letter. Spalding isn't coming either. Mother Pauline's letter to him was candid and consolatory. Perhaps his day is passing. He expects to have new lectures ready next year. The history of the influence of the Ave Maria would make a most important volume. Spalding is sorry to hear of Sister Rita's illness. Spalding is reading (Louise) Guiney's papers with much interest.

Drouart de Leyey, Father L( ): Tokio, Japan
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Drouart encloses some tracts (no enclosure) which are serious, intellectual, and truly apostolic. The intellectuals of Paris have at last responded to his appeal. The most celebrated of them, Mr. De Lapparent, has returned to God. Lapparent was secretary of the Academy of sciences. The drawback to this work is the question of money. Would Hudson interest his readers in this work?

Guiney is grateful for the work of the printers. She will be interested to see the papers Hudson sent her, and has no doubt they will be sent on from Oxford. In the meanwhile comes this letter from Father Heuser and she is sure Hudson will be pleased to read p. 2. She sent to (Edmund) Gosse Hudson's complimentary citing of his lyric in the issue of Jan. 16th.

Geare, J( ) Holwell: Holland Patent, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson will justly criticize and condemn him for all the trouble he has given him when he tells Hudson that he has recalled his renunciation of his Anglican Orders, and shall continue in his present calling. He cannot bring his conscience to realize that all his priestly offices have all been in vain. He will never forget Hudson's kindness.

(1909) Jan. 25
Smith, Father John Talbot: Dobb's Ferry, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Smith should be in the city today helping the Paulists to celebrate. It is rumored that Father (Michael) Lavelle will go to the University. The success of the (Catholic) Summer School under Smith's rule has left him open to the people who thrust upon the innocent offices which they avoid. Smith seized a parish and made it a barrier. Bishop (Bernard J.) McQuaid was laid away quietly as became a great man. Smith has notes which might be suitable for the "Ave Maria." Smith did not like Miss Guiney's comparison. A Columbia lawstudent from Crawfordsville, (Indiana) spent two days here. He insisted on learning what literary work Smith was engaged on and fell into a trance on hearing Smith read a chapter of it. All Smith's local friends pretend he is not an author and so does he. Smith had a letter from Katherine Tynan about Hudson's review of her prayer-book.

Marchal, Marie: Paris, (France)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They apprehended rightly that Hudson was ailing. Marchal's mother was able to attend midnight Mass. They enjoyed Father (Robert Hugh) Benson's articles on Lourdes. Apropos of Lourdes has Hudson heard of the death of Mr. Estrade, a witness of the apparitions, at the age of eighty-eight? Canon Oliver, formerly parish priest of Saint Laurent, died last week. He belonged to a Jewish family and was baptized by a maid as a child and later he and the whole family became converts.
