Ward, Wilfrid:
(Dublin, Ireland)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The Bishop of Limerick is well known there as a man who is never happy except when he is picking a quarrel. He suggested an article on the English Church and Ward accepted. In writing of the affair he was pledged to deal in the "Dublin (Review)". Cardinal Gibbons is showing his appreciation of the "Dublin" by writing for their next number. Modernism as set forth in English is very dangerous. Ward's endeavor has been to assail wrong without combining what is true with what is false. (Copy of this letter enclosed.)

to (James F.) Edwards:

He has learned that Edwards has letters relative to the corrspondence of Bishop Carrollton of Baltimore and priests in the West, Gibault, St. Pierre and De la Valiniere. The Illinois State Historical Library is printing a Collection of documents from 1778 to 1790 and he hopes Edwards' collection may have some material on the ecclesiastic situation. Search is futile so far.

Dean, Herbert S.:
Reigate, (England)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Dean sent off two manuscripts which may be of interest to Hudson. He has thought a good deal of the question of music and found it difficult to say anything satisfactory. Dean is also sending something which has elements of the autobiographical in it and if published he would like to preserve his anonymity. Father Chase, the subject of the article, was a notable man. The newspaper he refers to is the defunct "Church Review" of which Dean was the assistant editor. It had a curious history in its last years. The affair is a little too recent as yet. Hudson wouldn't want to be dropped into a squabble with Dr. Mortimer of Philadelphia of Bishop (Charles Chapman) Grafton! They were sadly disillusioned in their dealings with American ritualism.

Stoddard has been trying to think of a name for Hudson's new series. He does not think of going East at present. He could hardly survive a hot summer in his present condition.

The reckless among the Modernists are bent on using (John Henry Cardinal) Newman's name to that point where they will stir up the heresy-hunters. Then will happen what has happened to Rosmini and Hecker, a quasi-condemnation after death. As to the Coleman matter, Hudson should tell his friends to abstain from all mention of his name. There is something wrong. The book lists sent Smith are fine. He hoped to visit Hudson, but the Summer School has tied him up.

He did not know that Edwards' illness had been so very severe. Msgr. (John P.) Farrelly has been appointed to Cleveland. Bishop W(illiam (H.) O'Connell (whose sobriquet in Rome was Monsignor Pomposo) is in Rome again; Seton has not seen him he wouldn't take notice of Seton anyhow. Seton thinks O'Connell has a great chance of being made a Cardinal, not for the merits of his Rectorship at the American College, but he stands high at the Vatican. Bishop (Thomas F.) Kennedy will probably be made Archbishop of Philadelphia. He gives his intentions of travel. Rome is full of strangers, is badly policed and the streets are filthy. His happiest days in Rome are when he is out of it. He has not made definite plans for travel this summer. He finds it hard to draw away from society. He gives his position in society. He feels very acutely that his sister did not leave him a life interest in some part of the income.

Metcalf has read "Some Roads to Rome in America" by (Georgina Pell) Curtis with care and interest. There came to his mind several converts whose stories were not included, but he realizes the difficulties involved. In a volume like this the mystery of God's dealings with men becomes even more of a mystery. The book should do much good. He was interested in Emma Cary's story at whose baptism he assisted. His aunt, Julia Metcalf, was the god-mother. Metcalf is acquainted personally with fifteen of the converts.

Hinkson, Katharine Tynan:

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hudson is so good about the children. Hinkson can never thank him enough. Bunny sends Hudson one of his old "poems". He and Pamela are two dears; Toby is in the hobbledehoy stage. It is odd that her countrymen should have any acquaintance with her writings since they never buy her books. A little while ago someone sent her from New York a violent denunciation of her which had apparently been sent to all the priests of the diocese. It was founded apparently in the fact that the Catholic News of New York, pirating her "Handsome Brandons", had made the Brandons Catholics. She meant to have written to Archbishop (John) Farley about the Catholic News' dishonesty.
