Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan is rushing these few pages to Hudson. She has been distracted and delayed by the quantities of letters which have poured in relative to the Laetare Medal. It is very good of people to be interested. She encloses a letter she has received from (Katherine E.) Conway. (No Enclosure).

Curtis, Georgina Pell: Chicago, (Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father (Theodore) Metcalf is kind to say such nice things about "Roads." The material she refused was too much of a repetition of the good ones that she accepted. She left no stone unturned to get only the best. She does not intend to make her Who's Who just like the Marcus American Who's Who. Curtis thinks Sir Francis Burnand's book is readable and interesting and Marcus' book very dull. She has already had some returns that are fine and also amusing. The work on the Who's Who is going very well.

Leftwich, Amelia: St. Louis, M(issouri)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

The balance of Burwell (Leftwich's) bill was never paid simply because they have never had the money. They paid so much to her mother each month that she promised to attend to it. She feels Mr. Leftwich will be on his feet again in six months when he will settle the matter up.

1909 Apr. 11
Dean, Herbert S.: Reigate, (England)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dean sends with this another letter about the article on Father Chase which Hudson may like to send on to Dr. Wasse. From reading Miss Guiney's article, Dean fears he has worked on a basis not existing in the States. Dean has got much stronger and has taken up work again with church music. "The Nun" was dreadful; Bazin has just produced another. Hudson should look out for "The Love-Story of St. Bel" by Bernard Capes. He is glad to see that Mr. and Mrs. Bellamy Storer are likely to get back into public life now that Roosevelt has retired. He is looking forward to meeting them at Norman Potter's place. They read Dunne's "Mr. Dooley" regularly. He fears Lord Ripon is breaking up, he is very old.

 Enclosure:

1909 Apr. 11
Dean, Herbert S.: Reigate, (England)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The paper in question is the "Church Review," and the editor A. Clifton Kelway who knew Fathers Chase and Theed, though his own church was St. Peter's and his friends Mr. Prynne and Mr. Leeper. Kelway took up the "Church Review" with Dean as his assistant. After it came to an end, Kelway has been travelling on journalistic work; he has written a life of Prynne who died a few years ago. Dean never felt there was much chance of his becoming a Catholic. His position was much that of Bishop Grafton and Dr. Mortimer. Dr. Wasse is quite right in thinking that the priest he refers to is Father Theed. Father Chase was followed at All Saints by Mr. Anwyl. Mr. Leeper has since got married and settled down in an Anglican living. (J.) Faber Scholfield, a nephew of Fa ther Faber also got married but now, with his wife and children, is a Catholic. Mr. Wonnaedt also became a Catholic, half the congregation became Catholics when he did.

(Note: A note in pencil to (James F) E(dwards) asks him to see that the request is answered soon, signed by Father Cavanaugh's initials. Attached is a carbon of Cavanaugh's reply.)

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The wide publication of the award of the Laetare Medal has brought her much additional work. "The Wargrave Trust" has the first claim upon her time and strength. Tiernan thanks Hudson for the kind notices of the award which he has sent. She likes the one from the New York paper best. She has delayed answering Father (John) Cavanaugh until she can see her own Abbot-Bishop. She wishes she could come to Notre Dame to accept the medal, but she hardly sees how this would be possible. That Cavanaugh thinks of bringing the medal himself is an honor that she appreciates. She encloses some verses written for the feast day of Bishop Leo Haid, O.S.B., and published in the Charlotte "Observer".

Guiney, L(ouise) I(mogen): Boston, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

If Hudson received manuscripts on Chinese mission life Lady Winefride Cary-Elwes posted them to Hudson. She sails tomorrow with her husband from New York. The stories are by (Alice?) Dease, Lady Gainsborough's sister. Would Hudson like an article on the local associations of the Saxon St. Frideswide, the Patron of Oxford University and City. Her chief reason for wishing to print it now is that a church is to be built at Oxford dedicated to St. Frideswide and St. Edmund of Abingdon sooner than they hope to put up a shrine as a memorial to their late Rector Father Arthur Day, S.J.

Gregori, Fannie: Bologna, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Gregori hopes Hudson will not think her ungrateful for not writing oftener. The Duchess Salviati informs her that Averardo will make his first Communion at the end of this month or early in May. Since the death of Scipione he is trying to be a real perfection. Gregori loves them all dearly. She hears Professor Edward is in poor health and asks to be remembered to him. Her best days were spent in America and especially at Notre Dame and St. Mary's.

1909 Apr. 28
S(eton), Archbishop R(obert): Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The weather has torn him down a little. He pontificated in San Andreas. They had a grand and glorious time at St. Peter's on Sunday in Albis for the Beatification of Joan of Arc. He met Bishop Mostoyn of Meneira; the Bishop's sister-in-law and her daughter had tea with him last winter. He gives the theme of his conversation with Sir Alfred Moloney, late Governor of Trinidad. They mentioned Archbishop (William H.) O'Connell and the manners of the clergy in general. Bishop (John P.) Farrelly is to be consecrated by Cardinal Gotti in the chapel of the American College next Saturday. Almost all the Bishops who were in Rome do not adhere to the distinction laid down in the ceremonial between bishops and archbishops; he explains the manner of dress. So many high-caste people do seem to remember him much more than he remembers them. He gives instances mentioning Madame de Weidenhielm of the diplomatic corps. There may be something in him that attracts or influences people in his favor. He will spend September and October. in Spain.

He is sorry to learn of Edwards' illness. In the last two years he has had more illness than in the other fifty years. While he was sick and getting better he thought of the past. He has a catalogue of 1859. He sent a partial list of the N.D.C. Cadets. He trusts Edwards is improved.

Leftwich, W.M.: St. Louis, M(issouri)
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

He hates to other Edwards. He quotes the attorney that wrote to him that he was instructed to settle along the lines suggested by Leftwich and that they could not see their way clear for taking further chances for unfulfilled promises. He is at a loss to understand the Secretary taking this stand. He asks for a full and itemized statement of the account. He regrets the Secretary does not show a more kindly disposition and regard for the family's connection with Notre Dame in the past. He thinks the lawyer responsible.
