1909 Dec.
Seton, Archbishop Robert: Rome, Italy
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

His wishes for Edwards are on the card. He hopes Edwards will receive it in time and that the sight of the beautiful roses will cheer him. May God grant Edwards spiritual graces and temporal favors this Holy Season. He is in better health now and thinking seriously of returning to the United States. He has plenty of work in him and is ashamed living there doing nothing. He has written to Archbishop (John M.) Farley and a great friend in New York about his intention.

They are making special rates depending on the number of magazines and support of the small library. They have no report from Edwards' library, of course he wants a renewal. (Note: The list and second request is attached, dated Dec. 2)

Vaughan, Bishop John S(tephen): Manchester, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The difficulty of visiting Hudson has enormously increased. He feels the change from Rome to gloomy Manchester. He went to Rome last month to pack, a very hurried visit, but he did have a delightful audience with Pius X and Merry del Val, and was presented with a ring by Archbishop Stonor. Abbe P.F. Secher has written to ask leave to translate "How I came to do It" into French.

They ask Edwards to fill out the post card and they will send a copy of the brochure.

1909 Dec. 14
Graham, Father Henry G.: Motherwell, Scotland
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Graham sent off volume 2 of his manuscript before he got Hudson's letter. It was a comfort to know that Hudson will do what he can with the articles. Graham cannot hope to write such a masterpiece as C(harles) W(arren) Stoddard's beautiful "Troubled Heart". Graham wrote it for the Ave Maria and none of it would appear in the C(atholic) T(ruth) S(ociety) without Hudson's permission. Graham is sorry to know of Hudson's illness.

Walsh, Thomas: Brooklyn, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Walsh thanks Hudson for the kind review of his book "The Prison Ships". Hudson's critique is pretty close to what Walsh thinks of himself at his cheeriest moments. Walsh reviews rather extensively for one of the New York papers. He is self-taught and trusting to his ear in the matter of technique.

1909 Dec. 29
Claypool, John W.: Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Toledo, Ohio

Under the terms of George Rhodius' will, Edwards gets $20,000 and the University (of Notre Dame) gets $5,000. He lists other bequests. He will do all he can to get the breastpin that Edwards speaks of. These things must wait until he is appointed executor and then he can take it up with the court. There is talk of a compromise; it might be wise for the beneficiaries under the will to consent to a scaling of their bequests rather than take the chances of long litigation. He wants Edwards to give him his views privately.

(Wattson), Paul James Francis, S.A.: Garrison, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Their first Christmas in the Catholic Church was rendered especially memorable by the presence of Father Godfrey, O.F.M. and Father Paschal Robinson. He highly appreciates the extract re The Lamp. Mr. Shea, one of the seminarians at Dunwoodie, is a great lover of Notre Dame. P.S. He is enclosing (no enclosure) an advance impression of what The Lamp has to say about the Church Unity Octave of Prayer for 1910. Hudson helped it along last year and he hopes for his continued assistance.
