Guiney, Louise I(mogen): Newton Centre, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson might do worse than reprint many of the old liturgical hymns in the English translations of the Tractarian group, particularly those from the Parisian Breviary and elsewhere by Newman's dear Isaac Williams. How hard Father (Herman J.) Heuser and Hudson must find it to get up enthusiasm for their own neglected inheritance in American Catholics! When she gets quite well Guiney has been advised to go back to England for a rest. If she goes she must stay. She may take a young cousin of hers, Grace Cecily Guiney, with her to England. Would Hudson consider including her among his contributors? Guiney cut out and forwarded in her letter of sympathy to Mrs. (Henry W.) Wilberforce Hudson's paragraph about her husband. This is written at Dr. Jackman's where she has been so long but she will return to Boston on Wednesday.

Hinkson, K(atharine) T(ynan): Chipperfield, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hinkson is sure the children both thanked Hudson for the stamps and pictures. Bunny is very wise at eleven. People wonder at Pamela having made her First Communion at nine. They have a delightful young priest there, and the children were happy when Father Gilbert Doran, O.S.B., prepared them for their first confession. Hinkson sent a photograph of the three taken by Father Dhilfield last summer. The John O'Mahany (?) book was published with her consent. He left three boys; her sister works hard for them. He left her nothing but a few hundred pounds.

Franklin, Nathan E.: Deadwood, So(uth) Dakota
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

A letter from (Eu)gene (P.) Melady advises him that Edwards is not feeling well. He asks why Edwards doesn't come out to their mountains. He is interested to know the reason for Victor Schlichting's short career at the University (of Notre Dame) as he was instrumental in getting his parents to send him. He is almost certain that Victor has misinformed his parents.

Griffin, Maring I.J.: Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)

It is a long time since they have had communication. He is now Librarian of the American Catholic Historical Society and desires that they have co-operative relations. Robinson, O.F.M., Father Paschal: Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Robinson was interested to learn from the Ave Maria that an English Version of Pere Leopold de Cherance's "Life of St. Clare" is soon to appear. At least three others works on the same subject are under way, one is a translation by (Mrs.?) Reginald Balfour and another by Ernest Gilliat-Smith. Robinson's own little contribution is out at last. He enjoyed the advantage of visiting the Poor Clare's Archives in preparing his work, so it is based on first-hand research.

(1910) Mar. 11
Searle, Father Geo(rge) M., C.S.P.: Berkeley, California
to (Richard Henry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Searle acknowledges Clarke's letter of March 4. He supposes "prius" would mean from the vernal to the autumnal equinox and "posterious", the other. He does not think anyone has proposed a reform in the names of the constellations because astronomers now hardly pay any attention to them. Searle expects to be back in New York in three months or less and it is doubtful if he returns to Berkeley. The fogs are bad for his bronchitis and rheumatism. What he really needs is a tropical climate or a dry one like Arizona. He had a delightful time in Havana and wishes the order had a house there.

La Loiseau, Ch. de (?): Paris, (France)
to (Richard Henry Clarke): (New York, New York)

(Clarke) has asked him for information about a map of the heavens of which he gives only the title "Coeli Stellati Christianae Haemispherium prius"(?). Despite all his good will he cannot identify a document of which he knows absolutely nothing, of which he has no photograph, and concerning which he does not know its size or approximate date or kind of print. He says that even the title is abbreviated. If he had this information he might be able to answer the question.

Spalding, Bishop J(ohn) L(ancaster): Peoria, (Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Spalding hopes Hudson can make the promised visit before Easter. Hudson's suggestions concerning the books are valuable, and he would love to talk this and other matters over with Hudson.

MacMahon, Anita: London, (England)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Would Hudson care for an article during the summer dealing with the "Pardons" of Brittany? She hears Brittany is a stronghold of Catholicism and she is going there at the end of April for several months. She is a good linguist, and (encloses her personal card listing some of the journals she has contributed to.) She is a member of the Catholic Women's League.

Johnston, William H.: Denver, Colorado
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Mrs. Johnston and he wish to thank Edwards for his courtesies to their son, Fabian. Although his brother could take care of his son in Ohio they thought it advisable for him to remain under better influence than the Army. He discusses whether Fabian should get a job in South Bend and asks Edwards for advice on the subject.

Seton, Archbishop Robert: Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

This is a new postcard on the market. It represents ailing Vienna. He has given up all idea of returning to America unless God should prolong his life to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of his Ordination. Then he would never go back to Europe but lay his bones in the cemetery at Emmitsburg. He sends Easter greetings.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan was surprised by Hudson's proposal to send proofs to her for the change he suggested, and telegraphed to tell him to make the change himself. But since the Ave Maria comes without the story she is sorry she did not tell him to send the proofs. She will not be surprised or injured if he does not publish the story.

Raupert, J(ohn) Godfrey: Dunkirk, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Raupert came here to rest. Every lecturing effort brings relapses and shows clearly that he must give in. He sails for Hamburg to meet his wife, brother and sister on April 2, and then on to England to attend to business matters and to see Eric. Hudson is his first and best friend in this country. If his new book comes to be written he will have much to say about the Ave Maria and its editor. The seeds have been sown in the States, but he is disillusioned on many other points. A certain lack of ordinary generosity made his task especially hard. Raupert had an interesting talk with the Archbishop of Philadelphia, (Patrick John Ryan) who had known Judge Edwards and received his daughter into the Church but she ultimately relapsed into spiritism. He visited (Eusefia) Palladino. She is a very simple and uneducated woman, but is making lots of money and that satisfies her. She does not know what the sources of her spiritual powers are. Carrington is approaching their view and with his permission Raupert has introduced a priest who is now instructing his wife. Paul is doing well with Raupert's book. If Hudson should publish the article this week will he send a copy and copies to names enclosed (not enclosed). His mother-in-law would be glad to have copies of "Fr. Tim". (P.S.) The (Bellamy) Storers have given him the cold choulder since he asked them to help in his work. They will no doubt be adding to Benson's resources.

Guiney, L(ouise) I(mogen): Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

About 1899, Guiney translated the Little Flowers of St. Francis. W.T. Arnold's translation came out a few years later. There has never been a version made by a Catholic except the anonymous one issued by the Catholic Truth Society. Would Hudson care to let her choose some 30 or 35 chapters to print in the Ave Maria? She is not yet very strong.

Raff, Mrs. M( ), Florence: Bilox, Miss(issippi)
to James (F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

They certainly wish Edwards could be there enjoying this salt sea air. The roses and wisteria are in bloom. They have sea food, fish — the shrimp are especially good. They hope Edwards is gaining and will be in to see them when they return.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan returns the proofs with corrections. It all comes from trying to put too much in a short story. Long ago Robert Carter, editor of Appleton's Journal, told her about the same thing. She cannot write a short story. She encloses the letter from Ireland which Hudson sent (no enclosure). The writer is too flattering and Tiernan will send the list she asks for. She finds the letter from the young Chinaman very touching.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

When his poor friend Herman Merivale lost his wits for a while, Hannon helped his wife with an incompleted book and also aided her—a fellow countryman: hence Herman's sincere conversion in other ways. Father O'Neill wrote him a letter of encouragement about his "Devil's Parables".
