Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan is sorry that the last page of manuscript went to the printer before Hudson received a further supply. It is an exquisite picture on the new cover of the Ave Maria. She is sorry to learn of Hudson's difficulty in getting things done right at the Ave Maria. However she has never seen anything issued from any press more perfectly than the many things which have come from his, especially (Robert Louis) Stevenson's letter. Hudson must know the enclosed lines to Mother Marianne, (O.S.F.). Tiernan thanks Hudson for the kind words in the Ave Maria for her verses which she wrote for Bishop (Leo Haid, O.S.B.)'s jubilee. Hudson's tribute must have gratified the Benedictine Fathers of Belmont (Abbey). Where did Hudson obtain the item about the slave-mart—none ever existed at Belmont and she doubts if there were a dozen slaves in Gaston County. There was no such place as Garibaldi—now Belmont. She is glad Hudson decided to take "The Light of the Vision" instead of "The Wargrave Trust." She will consider Hudson's suggestion about Scribners, but fears that this story lacks elements of popularity which are present in Spearman's books.

Sabateé, Jean B.: Providence, R(hode) I(sland)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sabateé acknowledges receipt of the book "Father Damien" issued by Hudson's firm. Sabateé is a former Honolulu boy and admirer of Damien. The immortal letter of (Robert Louis) Stevenson is the protest of one who like the writer saw the work of Damien. Damien's spirit still lives on in the persons of Father ( ) Maxime at Kalaupapa and Father Joseph Emmeran at Kalawao and Brother Joseph (Ira B.) Dutton, the Brothers of the Sacred Hearts and the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse. He signs as "The Bystander" of the Providence Visitor.

Sargent, Henry R.: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Years ago Sargent read the Ave Maria as an Anglican and Hudson's attitude did nothing to stay his progress toward the Catholic Church. Does (A. Hilliard At- teridge), the writer of "Christchurch Priory", know the hearts of Anglicans? Hudson can hardly know the pain felt by many of them by accusations that imply so much.

J(ordan), E(lizabeth): New York, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Jordan thanks Hudson for the copy of "Father Damien". Roseberry's "Life of Chatham" goes to Hudson. Henry Jamesand Howells walked in upon her on Wednesday and they had a long talk. Howells recently lost his wife and James his brother. It is whispered that James has cancer. He spoke of Sister (M) Rita, (C.S.C.). As she wrote Sister Edith she had a dream of running out to St. Mary's but has decided not to come just yet. George Harvey, president of Harpers, is the editor of "Harper's weekly". His associate George B. Fife left last month. Gilman is in temporary charge. Jordan will be interested in their "School Girl Abroad" papers. She wonders if she describes their return voyage on the stormtossed Etruria. Shw went abroad every summer for nine years except in 1903. Jordan's sister and her husband moved from Racine, Wisconsin to Philadelphia and Jordan will spend Easter with them.

Hill, J( ) Arthur: Thornton, (England)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hill read the copies through and not merely the case of demonical possession. Though not a Catholic, he is desirous of learning more of Hudson's way of looking at things. He has been reading "The Graces of Interior Prayer" by Father Poulair, S.J., with the intention of learning something of Catholic mystical theology. He was brought up a Dissenter but never had much belief, and if anything, he is an agnostic. Though not a spiritist, he is indisposed to condem the movement as diabolical.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan is sorry to send such a small amount of manuscript. As Father Benson would say, it has been extraordinarily hard to write.

Hill, J( ) Arthur: Thornton, England
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Can Hudson give him the source of the quotation from William James in the Ave Maria of October 8, 1910? He has hunted through the "Principles of Psychology" and a few of his other books but can't find it.

Guiney, L(ouise) I(mogen): Falmouth, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Would Hudson feel disposed to print some papers on the English Catholic poets of 1550-1650? Now that she is going back to Oxford and the Bodleian it would be fairly easy to do. Guiney feels modern Catholic poets have got pretty well into public view, all except noble Aubrey de Vere but these older ones are hardly ever referred to as Catholics.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan wishes she could escape from the interruptions and distractions which make it doubly hard to write. The paper he forwarded was a copy of the "Tidings" of Los Angeles, containing a very flattering notice of "The Light of the Vision".

O'Kelly, Father P( ): Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

O'Kelly's sister maintains that he did not acknowledge the check for the poor nuns of Italy. Hudson will have received an acknowledgmant from the Civilta Cattolica. He thanks Hudson for taking up the cause of these helpless women. (Written on stationery of) "Rome".

Tiernan is sorry to be so dilatory about sending manuscript. Next week distractions will be less and she will be able to accomplish more.
