1913 Jun.5

Macmillan Company New York, (New York)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

Will Hudson retract in his next issue a statement he made in the May 17 issue of the Ave Maria which accuses them of bringing out an anti-Catholic book. The book referring to Father Ralph is neither published nor imported by them. It is published by a concern of a somewhat similar name in London.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan's mistake has been in trying to tell too long a story in too small a space. So far she has received $550 on account for this story which leaves a small balance. Since she thinks Hudson will be amused to read the letter of Dr. Egan, she encloses it (no enclosure).

Fraser, Mary C(rawford): Spokane, Wash(ington)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Fraser was delighted with Hudson's kind words about the article. It is good of him to ask for more. She sends two more chapters. She has mountains of work to do in the next three weeks for she believes she is going home—to Rome—at the beginning of July.

Brett, George P.: New York, (New York)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

Brett sent the following telegram to Hudson: "Will Hudson retract in his next issue the statement in the May 17 Ave Maria which accuses the Macmillan Company of bringing out an anti-Catholic book, 'Father Ralph'. It is neither published nor imported by them but by a concern of similar name in London." The story by Gerald O'Donovan was offered to Brett in London. He refused to have anything to do with its publication. Consequently it is disconcerting to him, as president, to be accused. No one has profounder respect for the Roman Catholic Church than himself.

Fraser, Mary C(rawford): Spokane, Wash(ington)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Fraser thanks Hudson for the kind words about her articles on St. Cecilia. She has received the first instalment of St. Peter and St. Paul and feels proud of Hudson having printed it. She is doing other chapters on St. Gregory, St. Boniface IV and others. She feels that she is a poor relation of the Benedictines through her beloved Dame Teresa Gertrude who died just two years ago. She will stay on for a couple of months in Spokane, and hopes to sail at the end of August. She will, if possible, try to stop off at Notre Dame.

1913 Jun.28
Sloan, William H.: Los Cruces, New Mexico
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sloan is willing that Hudson should republish the enclosed. He is too busy now to polish it and add to it, but he may before long send something more satisfactory. (The enclosed clipping concerns) Sloan, now editor of The Catholic Banner, who was formerly a Baptist missionary in Mexico. He is familiar with the tactics of anti-Catholic agitators and in his paper pays his respects to them: (concerning) The Menace.
