(1914)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It is the function of a church to hold to the truth it has received, but it belongs to a university to do that and more to reach out for all the new truth in the air. There is too much church control of education. Protestant colleges have passed to sectarian control with little objection. The church will always incline to corrupt truth, but why complain. If truth is found, it will be of God.

Brownson, Josephine V(an) D(yke): (Detroit, Michigan)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She would have liked to have seen Hudson's face when he wrote those remarks in the Ave Maria referring to (Henry F.) Brownson. Hudson put Brownson before the public with his sins well covered by the dignity that flows from intellectual eminence. If will, memory, and understanding constitute the soul, then Brownson had a soul. It is on his unquestioning faith that she builds her greatest comfort. She asks for two copies each of the Jan. 3 and 10 numbers with the death notices.
