Marchal, Marie: Paris, (France)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Marchal was pleased to receive Hudson's letter and the book on the Eucharistic Congress. The Ave Maria has already alluded to the condemnation by Rome of the French royalist paper "L' Action Francaise," a most unfortunate occurrence. She has it from a learned theologian that "The campaign against L'Action Francaise is odious. The Holy Father has been grievously misled. The Index does not oblige in conscience." The readers of the paper are divided and the Freemasons delighted. The motto of the paper "Politics first of all" has been distorted to "Politics above Religion" and deceived Pope Pius XI. Marchal was brought up in a home where her parents upheld the infallibility of the Pope in matters of faith, but felt that he was fallible in human affairs because he was informed by men. History abounds with political mistakes made by Popes. Marchal's eyes cause her some uneasiness. Madame de Louis has just died in her 96th year.
