to (James Alphonsus) McMaster (New York, New York)

Page 14. (Preceding pages missing). The writer asks if, considering the relations of the Masonic Order with the Holy See, in whose defense the Catholic Union were established, it is quite proper to go so far beyond our duty as American citizens and pay a kind of religious homage to the memory of Washington, when that action, under present circumstances has a queer look about it. The writer has not written to make complaints or find fault with the Catholic Union, with whom he soon hopes to be connected. But he will be grateful if some one proves to him that the views he has expressed in this letter are mistaken.

(______) (Dec. 23 )

McCloskey, Father G(eorge) (New York, New York)

to (Orestes A.) Brownson (Elizabeth, New Jersey)

McCloskey got the tickets (5,000). They were headed "by Invitation" which well neccessitated the publishing of the names McCloskey gave Brownson at once. He would like to get more names but time would not permit it. He wishes that the names of members of the clergy could appear with the names of the laity. He appointed a priest to do this, but he suggests that Brownson see the Archbishop personally. McCloskey says that the other information Brownson communicated to him filled him with more revulsion that he has ever before experienced.

McEvoy, John F. Lowell, Massachusetts

to (Orestes A.) Brownson

Mc Evoy enclosed with his letter a formal invitation from the Mechanics Association of Lowell to lecture before its members next winter. He describes the Association as a prosperous club with a good library and research facilities. The growing Catholic minority has asked to hear Brownson in the next series of lectures. To date all have been Protestant or non-Sectarian but the growing number of Catholics has asked for Brownson. Brownson will pardon his familiarity as he feels he knows him already being himself an American Catholic.

The enclosed address came to McGee from (Father John P.?) Roddan accompanied by a note requesting to be submitted to Brownson and that it be ready for the press on Monday morning. If Brownson can read, amend, and sign it, McGee will have the committee called together for their signature. He wonders if it should be signed only by the other two of the subcommittee, i.e., Mr. Devine and himself. P.S.-McGee saw the Bishop and indicated the points of the address. The Bishop approved and is most anxious this document be as perfect as possible. McGrath, however, forgot to give the Bishop his name, and now asks McMaster to do so.

In the shorter slip, Mr. Beecher throws down the gauntlet to Brownson and Miss M'Kay. She would like to have some of Brownson's thoughts on taking it up.

Letter to (James Alphonsus McMaster) (New York, New York)

The writer sends to the Free(man's) Journal a sketch of the life of Dr. Eugene B. Murtha, born October 12, 1845, and died Aug. 24, 1886. He graduated from St. John's College, Fordham, in 1864 and from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1868, distinguishing himself in both. He was a devout Catholic and served two terms as president of the Xavier Alumni Sodality. In 1875 he was appointed a Sanitary Inspector in the Health Department of New York City, and continued in that service until a year before his death. He earned the distinction of being one of the most capable, reliable, and efficient members of the department. His funeral, in accordance with his wishes, was held privately.

Letter to (James Alphonsus McMaster) (New York, New York)

The annexed memoranda were made by Mrs. E(______). The editorial in the Vile Republican was doubtless inspired by malice but contains much truth, and the writer encloses it so that McMaster can use it as a text when he wishes. Most American papers are afraid to tackle the subjects. Since only a few Americans can cross the ocean, a pilgrimage of five or six millions of Americans who receive Holy Communion every Sunday might be preached.

A.L. (unsigned)

To this is added: The writer has visited the widow of Cap(tain Joseph) Fry, who, while at Kingston, (Jamaica), wrote his wife that the Cubans there placed full confidence in him, and that he had the "Virginius" blessed. Regarding the collections for the family, only three contributions have been handed in, but Mrs. Fry disclaimed any help, although she has seven children to support and her pension from the United States was cut from $25. to $20. Asked why the cut was made, she explained that the reduction came when the large pension was made for Mrs. Lincoln.

to (Morgan J. O'Brien) (New York, New York)

The letters, signed by O'Brien, which invite McMaster to the Xavier Union Dinner, said that, since McMaster was not coming, (Maurice Francis) Egan could come in his stead. Egan would never have been made Associate Editor of the Freeman's Journal, had he not made a reputation of his own. If Egan and McMaster have read their catechism the same way and come to look at things in the same manner, it is a special grace of God for Catholic Journalism. But McMaster cannot extend to Egan an invitation to attend the dinner in his stead. He earnestly recommends that O'Brien write Egan. Egan is courted in circles not Catholic, and is modest, unassuming, and clever.

(______) (Aug. 17, )

McMaster, Mary M.C. Poland, (Ohio)

to (James Alphonsus McMaster) (New York, New York)

She had intended writing long before, but she was so weary that she could not. This morning, however, upon reading an account of the death of his baby son she is moved to write to express all their sympathy to McMaster and his wife. She has not heard from them for some time, and takes for granted that they are going on as usual. In her household, however there has been much affliction. In August, the year before, she and her mother were will of typhoid fever for eight weeks, and her mother has never recovered completely from this attack, now always needing someone within call. At about this time Nett (McMaster) had to work beyond her strength because they could get no help, and began bleeding from her lungs, so that she took to her bed and remained there five months. In February her father became ill suddenly, and suffered greatly for seven months, there were several weeks when they despaired of his health, even the doctor had little hope. All this while, even with with three invalids on her hands, she herself did all the nursing as well as the housework, since she could get no help. But now Nett is better, and is going to cousin Gilbert's; and her father has been in Canada for his health. If they were in better condition she would go to Florida for the winter, but she fears for them. Last April they had a visit from Crawford McMaster, who seemed delighted to be with them. She wants him to spend the coming winter at their home, but does not think he will come, for he seems attached to his farm. Three weeks ago Grandfather Chase died at ninety years of age. They are expecting a visit from Aunt Cary (______). She asks how McMaster endured the warm season, during which they, even though in the country, were miserable. Drixie's photograph has been hanging next to her brother Gilbert's since it came. She is sorry his son died, for there should be someone worthy of carrying on her grandfather's name, and her brother Gilbert is gone. She hopes they are in good health and hopes to hear from them soon. Her regards to his children and Mrs. Brown and her family.

Maes, Father Camillus P(aul) (Monroe, Michigan)

to (Richard Henry) Clarke (New York, New York)

Maes tells Clarke that he has made a mistake in (the enclosed) account of Bishop Frederic(k) Rese, since he spelled it with a "z" instead of an "s". Rese as Vicar General of Cincinnati in 1830 visited Monroe and found a commodious church, the first brick church built in Michigan. He met the presbytery and was amazed to learn that they were all converts from Protestantism. Rese visited several Indian tribes south of the Great Lakes. His visit to the "Pottowatomie tribe" was made the occasion of the withdrawal of the Protestant missionary. Rese promised a priest and Bishop (Edward) Fenwick sent Father Stephen T(heodore) Badin. This is extracted from Ben(jamin) J. Webb's "Centenary, etc. of Kentucky". Maes' life of Nerinckx is to be had from Robert Clarke, Cincinnati.

Maher, P(______) (______)

to (James Alphonsus McMaster) (New York, New York)

This kind of book does more harm than can be offset by the reading of sound doctrine in general Catholic literature. If McMaster does not have the work, the writer can get the loan of it for him. A criticism of it by McMaster would do good and give general satisfaction to Catholic patrons, besides weakening the influence of the book with those in high places who look upon Cox as an authority.

"Marney" (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

to (James Alphonsus McMaster) (New York, New York)

Part 2. (Preceding pages missing.) Those who heard the Declaration (Of Independence) read that day must surely have realized that History repeats itself, especially when they contrasted the acts of the Lincoln dynasty with the recital of charges against King George. The Philopatnian Institute, which was organized Dec. 22, 1850 and has grown steadily since, is the leading Catholic Literary Society and the only Free Catholic Reading Room in the city. A charter has been obtained from the Legislature and a stock company organized to erect a Hall for literary, social, and gymnastic purposes. Stock will be issued, so that the 125,000 Philadelphia Catholics can help erect a place where young men can go without having their minds corrupted. St. Joseph's Church has received a statue of the Blessed Virgin, of the finest Italian marble. Mr. Bernard Maguire has presented a marble altar to St. Michael's Church. He is not, however, a wealthy man. The ceiling of St. Malachy's Church has been decorated with a painting of the Transfiguration, a copy of a painting done in Paris in 1797 and now in the Vatican.

Martinovii, who is leaving for Europe on the Steamship Harmonia, would like to settle his accounts so he sends $10. to McMaster for the Freeman, which has received some years, and which he wishes sent him a few more years. He gives his future address as Tagrabian, Croatia, Austria. He is going to Europe to rest, perhaps for two years and perhaps for ever, after ten years of missionary work in this country. He loved his congregations, and they nine in number, some with only seven families, loved him; they even made up a purse of $250 for him when he left. His best congregation is Edinburgh, Ind(iana) numbering about fourteen families. At Indianapolis Mrs. Mary Walsh, the wife of a respectable and wealthy merchant, was baptized by Bishop (Maurice de) St. Palais, with Father (August) Bessonies as her God-father. Columbus (Indiana) is a nice little congregation, as is St. Vincent (Indiana), which is one mile from Prescott Station, where there is an Academy for girls conducted by Franciscan nuns whose motherhouse is in Oldenburg, (Indiana). St. Paul, (Indiana), and Greensburg (Indiana) are two little places who have built themselves fine brick churches. If McMaster wishes to see him, he will be at Pier 21 North River, foot of Fulton Street, New York, (New York) at eleven o'clock. He asks McMaster to excuse his writing and spelling.

Mary Agnes, Sister Columbus, Ohio

to (James Alphonsus) McMaster (New York, New York)

She sends him $2.00 for the Lamp at Paroy le Monial, $1.00 from the Sacred Heart Convent, and $1.00 from Miss Mary Wright, Zanesville, Ohio. The sisters plan to establish a school for the poor in Columbus, and having insufficient funds, are forced to appeal for help from outside. They have a fine select school, but this projected school would be for those who are unable to attend it, and who, since they refuse to attend a parochial school, are forced to go to the public schools and remain in utter ignorance. The plan is to prepare children to hold positions other than those of servants, for there is latent talent among them. But there are girls of fifteen years and more who can neither read no (sic) write, and have not made their first Communion. The Bishop of (Columbus) has given them his blessing and sanction. They propose to solicit $.50 from each of their friends, and requests the friends to solicit $.50 from their friends, for she believes no one can refuse. If they are successful at all, they can open the school by September. The Bishop promises a solemn high Mass once a year and a low Mass every week for the contributors, and the nuns will say many prayers for them.

Meredith, Mrs. M(iriam) (St. Louis, Missouri)

to Orestes A. Brownson (______)

The writer has taken the liberty of writing Brownson because his Review is becoming more and more anti-Catholic. Brownson feels neither fear nor remorse on the subject because the power of his gigantic intellect is behind him. Brownson would be grieved for the offense which appears to have moved Brownson's superiors. Brownson should not forget the reasons why he entered the Holy Battle. Brownson should remember too, Our Lord sought him out to champion His Cause. He should be on guard that the devil does not command him. If we expect God's help, we must be little children both in heart and in practice. Hence, Brownson should lay low that pride of his, and meditate on Our Lord's bitter passion. Then Brownson would reach a greater degree of perfection as a man, author, and publisher. She claims Brownson's doing evil and not good, to the Catholic public as well as Protestants by giving them a wrong notion of the idea of the Church. (Letter illegible in parts)

Some years ago, in an "Address on Thinking," he described his first visit to Newman. That description has been inserted in the last volume of the "American Library of Literature." Brother has not allowed the articles of Mgr. (Januarius) de Concilio to annoy him.
