to Father J(ames) R(oosevelt) Bayley (New York, New York)
Nesmith asks Bayley to give her a copy, or allow her to copy Bayley's last sermon. It would benefit her greatly. She lost Bayley's sermon in the first part of Lent on "doing penance." Happily, Bayley allows her to withdraw all that she said or alluded to, in writing at the wretched time. Perhaps Bayley would lend her Philothea again and thus propped up and sustained, she could begin her summer campaign with good courage. She asks if there is any hope of Bayley coming down tomorrow afternoon.

to Father J(ames) R(oosevelt) Bayley (New York, New York)
Nesmith is bound to attend a meeting of the Managers of the Ladies Depository this morning. Although she was appointed last autumn, she has never yet attended a meeting. She proposes that Bayley give her this afternoon and her sister this evening. Nesmith never should have thought anything of Bayley's declining to join them last Monday.

to Father (James Roosevelt) Bayley (New York, New York)
It was only last evening that Nesmith discovered that Bayley had forgotten his little breviary. Julia (Beers) has gone away, too, which makes them all feel bad. The idea of Nesmith attempting anything inspiring is absolutely ludicrous. She lives upon Bayley's kind words. She asks if he is going to dine out every day this week. Then she might double her prayers.

to Father (James Roosevelt) Bayley (New York, New York)
Nesmith should like to see Bayley before she leaves town. Julia (Beers) was to have gone to see the Bishop some time today. Nesmith intended to ask Bayley to have such implicit confidence in her that he can never imagine her jesting any more.

Nesmith, Mary (D.) Inwood, (Staten Island, New York)
to Father (James Roosevelt) Bayley (New York, New York)
Bayley will perhaps be astonished to hear from Nesmith so soon after seeing her, but she came away yesterday with the painful conviction that the time would come when she would no longer find Bayley there. When Bayley alluded to other and more distant places, Nesmith was struck with dismay. To her, Bayley's loss could never be supplied. From Bayley, she has learned to love the thought of God. It may be that Nesmith is unnecessarily alarmed by the thought of Bayley going farther away. Bayley spoke of coming next week, She will look for him every day after Monday.

to Bishop (James Roosevelt) Bayley Newark, (New Jersey)
Nesmith has been hoping for a good day for Ann to go to Newark tomorrow. Although Bayley has too many others to require the rochet Nesmith sends, still Nesmith feels she has no right to keep such things any longer than necessary. Nesmith heard of Bayley before Ann got home the last time, for Michael returned first. Frank (Nesmith) and Mary have been busy restoring the path made by themselves and her father. The piazza is nearly finished and she hopes Bayley will come down with Mr. Nesmith next Thursday and be their first friend to consecrate the boards.

to Father (James Roosevelt) Bayley (New York, New York)
Nesmith is disappointed not to be able to get to town today. The last two days have tried her severely. She is sorry to lose this week and asks Bayley to pray for her. She hopes he is well and that he means to come down the early part of the week. He should not suppose she has only one room. Even so, it is always his. What a precious afternoon they had the last time he was here.

to Bishop J(ames) R(oosevelt) Bayley (Newark, New Jersey)
Nesmith was going to send over to Bayley this morning but as Catherine said she could be spared till noon, Nesmith was glad of the opportunity. The mozetta is not as nice as it ought to be, but its lightness will make it comfortable for every day use. She hopes Bayley will be able to run away to the mountain air at Lake George. Meantime, Mother Tiers must take good care of him at Rockaway. If she had not her hands so full of "last things" Nesmith would be almost grieved to miss dear Julia (Beers). She will write to her from the lake, and look forward to her September visit. Mr. Nesmith's address is Fort William Henry Hotel, Caldwell, Lake George.

Nesmith hopes that by this time Bayley will be able to say what day this week they may look for him. Her admiration in the Sisters of Mercy would heighten if they would advise him to stay these warm nights at Staten Island. N(esmith) has not forgotten the Bishop's promise of spending several days with them.

Nesmith should like very much to see Bayley some time during the week. Bayley's coming and going among them is never fruitless. All his words are a great assistance to Nesmith. (P.S.) If her father, who is the bearer of this, does not return her a message, Nesmith may take it for granted that Bayley will spare her some time during the week.

Nesmith hopes they may stand some chance of seeing Bayley in the coming week. She is deriving the greatest benefit from Bayley's books. All the phantoms conjured by her own self-torturing mind have quite disappeared. She hopes to go on more bravely and generously, provided she get no more shocks. Bayley has helped her so much.

to Father (James Roosevelt) Bayley (New York, New York)
This is such a hard week for Nesmith that she must indulge herself in writing Bayley a few lines. She had counted on seeing Bayley here today. Mr. Nesmith is obliged to be absent on business for a few days. Mr. Nesmith concluded it would be better to have Mr. Berly meet the Wards the same evening of the fishing dinner. When dinner was about half over, Father Murphy walked in, sat down and began talking. He kept the gentlemen so long in the dining room they nearly forgot them. Afterwards, Nesmith found a note from Bayley.

Very warm evening they have been looking for Bayley to come. Nesmith returns the second volume of the Letters, but will retain the "Esprit de St. Francis" a little longer. As regards the two societies, she is afraid, in spite of all her efforts, to become a member before the approaching festival of the Blessed Virgin. If Bayley does not mean to come down this week, Nesmith may be obliged to go to down Monday or Tuesday.
