Oakes-Smith, Elizabeth (______)
to (Orestes A.) Brownson (______)
Thanks are extended for Brownson's notice of mention of the writer. She feels the kindness Brownson has done her. She would like to know if the character of Brownson's book is a secret. Oakes-Smith read Bishop Hopkin's miserable attempt to define American citizenship. She wants Brownson to write upon the same subject.

He neglected shamefully to thank Onahan for the book; he gave one copy to Father R. O'Kennedy his chaplain. Father O'Kennedy can talk on his fingers and consequently is O'Brien's confessor. He is settled and hopes by degrees to learn. He speaks of his reading in the Boston Pilot and Rose Kavanagh's book and health; he has a menagerie.

O'Brien, P.W. Burlington, Iowa
to (James Alphonsus McMaster) (New York, New York)
O'Brien met a gentleman who would like to have McMaster write an article on the Knights of Labor. He would like to know whether they are condemned by the Pope, whether they are condemned in Lower Canada, and if they are, whether that condemnation applies to the Knights in the United States. He spoke as if he believed that a society which is bad in one country cannot be good in another. The gentleman, a lawyer who did not wish his name to be given, considers the Freeman's Journal an authority. (The letter is marked as having come from P.W. O'Brien, Travelling Agent for the Freeman's Journal.)

O'Connor, (Father) P.F. Hickory, P.O., M(arylan)d
to James A(lphonsus) McMaster (New York, New York)
O'Connor is thankful that McMaster is taking so much trouble over the money that was sent, and O'Connor on his part will see the post master from whom he got the money order. Laura G. Ady is the widow of William M. Ady, whose obituary O'Connor is enclosing. If McMaster receives the money he should sent O'Connor a receipt, for if O'Connor receives no receipt, he will assume that McMaster has not received the money, and will send it again. He is enclosing some poetry written by the sister of Laura Ady. The author is a widow who has no income, but was dependent upon the generosity of the deceased W.M. Ady. She has previously written poetry published in the Catholic Register of Baltimore, and is a true Catholic, her poem "The Last Farewell" referring to O'Connor's leaving his mother in New Orleans. P.S. The post office at which he got the money order is at Belair, M(arylan)d, the nearest money order office. He got it on April 13, (______).

to (Orestes A. Brownson) (______)
At the request of Father O'Dwyer, Father O'Donnell undertook to write an article for the Review. Having written a few pages, Father O'Donnell was sent to Rome. He has made arrangements to receive the Review and the Tablet. Before the article can be published it must be worked. The material for the article is on the weak point of Protestantism and now, Father O'Donnell would like Brownson to write it up. There is an article on the unity of the Church in Bergier which Brownson would do well to read.

Mr. (Benjamin Butterworth, late of Cincinnati, the salaried secretary of the World's Fair Directory has toured Europe at the expense of the shareholders of the World's Columbian Exposition, and returned to sneer at the head of the Catholic Church and to mock religious emblems, especially the crucifix, and Madonnas. to Ja(me)s A(lphonsus) McMaster (New York, New York)
Onahan has been away from home, his correspondence in the meantime having been handled by Miss M Merrick, Gaulfield, and others. The only difficulty encountered is the failure to get a hall for the lecture. The one acceptable hall in town is engaged until Dec(ember) 15, and McMaster's friends would not care to receive him in any other than this, Bryan Hall. Onahan asks if McMaster can prolong his stay in town until Dec(ember) 15. The Hall has been tentatively engaged for that date, but if Mc Master cannot remain, another hall could be provided. They have been corresponding with friends in neighboring cities in regard to lecture, and will send McMaster a list of engagements shortly.
