Background

David Cortright serves as Director of Policy Studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, as Special Advisor for Policy Studies at the Keough School of Global Affairs, and as Chair of the Board of the Fourth Freedom Forum. Born 15 November 1946 in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, he majored in history at the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1968. He earned a master's degree in history from New York University. He served as chair of GI's for Peace at Fort Bliss, 1971; organized environmental action groups in Pennsylvania 1972-1974; conducted research at the Institute for Policy Studies, 1972-1974, and at the Center for National Security Studies starting in 1974; and completed a Ph.D. in political science from Union Institute Graduate School in 1975. He has taught at Goshen College and at the University of Notre Dame, and has written and published widely in support of nonviolence and world peace.
