Background

Rev. Martin J. Carter, S.A. (a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement), a native of High Point, North Carolina, earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Seminary, Chicago, Illinois, a Master of Divinity from Pope John Paul XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts, and a B.A. from Chicago State University. He served as director of the Office of Black Ministry for the Diocese of Brooklyn, and as Episcopal Vicar for African American Catholics in the Diocese of Raleigh starting in 1986.
