Simon, Simone Weil, and others; teaching files on prominent French authors and periods of French literature; subject files representing his personal interests, his criticism of neoconservative appropriation of Jacques Maritain, and his service at Notre Dame, especially his work with international studies and specifically the program in Angers, France; with related correspondence files, digital data, and printed material.
Background
Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Notre Dame beginning in 1965, awarded the Palmes Académiques by the French government. Bernard E. Doering was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and educated at the University of Dayton, Washington University (M.A.), and the University of Colorado (Ph.D.). With his wife, Elizabeth Jane Doering, he taught for several years at Indian Springs School, Helena, Alabama. At Notre Dame he helped to establish international studies and developed the program in Angers, France. He wrote a highly respected book, Jacques Maritain and the French Catholic Intellectuals, edited the correspondence of Jacques Maritain and Saul Alinski, published as The Philosopher and the Provocateur, and translated Jean-Luc Barré's Jacques and Raïssa Maritain: Beggars for Heaven, for which he won awards from the Catholic Press Association and the Association of American University Presses. He also published articles in The Review of Politics, Commonweal, The New Oxford Review, Theological Studies, Communio, and other periodicals. He continued his research into and writing about Jacques Maritain throughout his life, remaining active after his retirement as an emeritus professor. He died the ninth of July 2016.
