Scope and Content

Offprints of articles on contraception and the Catholic Church by John T. Noonan, Jr.; issues of the American Association of University Professors Bulletin that he saved reflecting his interest in academic freedom and tenure; and a volume containing papers on theological issues of Vatican II presented at the International Theological Conference, University of Notre Dame, March 1966.

Background

John T. Noonan, Jr., 1926-2017, taught in the Notre Dame Law School, 1961-1966. The articles in this collection date from his time at Notre Dame. Before he came to Notre Dame he graduated with highest honors from Harvard University at age 19, earned a doctorate in philosophy from the Catholic University of America, and completed a law degree at Harvard Law School. After he left Notre Dame he taught law at Berkeley until 1985, when President Ronald Reagan appointed him as a federal judge. He had a distinguished career on the federal bench. The books he wrote are available in the Hesburgh Library at Notre Dame, including The church and contraception; the issues at stake, by John T. Noonan, Jr. and Contraception: a history of its treatment by the Catholic theologians and canonists.
